The “Verizon iPhone” Versus “The iPhone On Verizon’s...

If you think back to 2005, you'll remember that the Motorola RAZR phone was all the rage. Not entirely unlike the iPhone today, it was the sleek phone that everyone wanted. But if you happened to be on the largest carrier in the U.S., Verizon, you couldn't get one. Again, sound familiar?

It wasn't until just about a year later that a version (the V3c) finally came to Verizon. It was a long wait, but I was excited to finally have access to the device, I pre-ordered one the first day I could. When I finally got it, there were some surprises in store. Rather than having the same colorful user interface that my friends' RAZRs (on other networks) had, it had some god-awful red proprietary UI made by Verizon itself. It also came with the added bonus of having Bluetooth file transfer capabilities disabled by Verizon. And it was loaded to the brim with Verizon's V CAST garbage.

So while part of the wait was undoubtedly due to Motorola getting a CDMA version of the device...

Alliance of the jailbreakers: Cydia acquires Rock

It's official: the two largest jailbreak app stores for the iOS platform, Cydia and Rock, are getting together.

ModMyi is reporting that Jay Freeman (AKA Saurik) and Mario Ciabarra (AKA psuskeels) have been working through an acquisition of Rock Your Phone, Inc. by SaurikIT, LLC for several months now. That deal became official last night, and over the next 10 days there will be a transition from Rock to Cydia where users can continue to purchase and download apps from the Rock app. After that time, users will need a Cydia store login to continue buying apps. Many of the themes and apps on Rock are already found on Cydia; the remainder will be transferred to Cydia as soon as possible.

According to the post, Ciabarra...

Garmin may quit smartphones within half a year

Garmin CFO Kevin Rauckman in an interview has said the company might back out of its smartphone business within the next half a year if it can't be turned around. He acknowledged to Reuters that devices like the Garminfone and nuvifone lines had undersold in the market and that the GPS maker would 'have to make decisions" as to whether it would redouble its efforts or back out. The company managed just $27 million in revenue from smartphones during the spring, far lower than competitors; Apple produced $5.33 billion from its iPhone business in the same period....

New iPad before the holidays?

A version of the iPad with a built-in video camera and support for the new FaceTime video conferencing standard has already progressed to the advanced testing stages, says “AppleInsider” (http://www.appleinsider.com), quoting a “person with proven knowledge of Apple’s future product plans.”

When might such a device arrive? Perhaps in time for holidays, but no later than March 2011, the article says. And the move, if it happens, would be as much about FaceTime as the iPad.

Namco talks Game Center

It's funny -- right in the middle of all of the fervor during the Game Center launch this week, the first company to the fore didn't happen to be one of these big new startups that's making headway in iPhone gaming. It turned out to be Namco, as one of the oldest brands around, Ms. Pac-Man, became the first title on the App Store to support Game Center. Now, of course, there are a few more games that support Apple's service (and more every day), but Macworld has a great look at what's coming next from Namco.

Turns out Namco's planning to go all-in on both iPhone and Game Center -- in addition to bringing a sequel to the Time Crisis on-rails shooter, it will bring a hidden object, ghost-catching game called...

It's common knowledge that the Doctor's time- and space-bending TARDIS is a lot roomier on the inside than its external dimensions let on, and now we can put a definite number to just how much space there is in there: a terabyte. Yup, that's how much storage Max Shanly managed to cram inside his "toy" TARDIS. It took a bit of elbow grease (plus a screwdriver) to get it all to fit, but most of the credit here is for sheer ingenuity -- who doesn't want to back up his data onto a freaking Time Lord's intertemporal transportation device? Max is currently working on hooking up the flashing light up top to represent hard drive activity and we're calling up our favorite KIRF suppliers to get them cranking these out.

Reminder: Get your free iPhone case by September 30th

Apple's iPhone 4 case program page reminds you that if you haven't jumped on the free case they're offering for the Antennagate issue, you're running out of time. The free case program will expire on September 30th, so if you haven't yet, run on over there, download the app to your iPhone, and choose a case for Apple to send off to you.

Or, if you are planning to buy an iPhone 4 but haven't yet, you might want to jump on it before the month ends -- some of the cases can sell for up to $30, so essentially you're getting a nice discount if it was something you would have bought anyway. There are certainly plenty of other cases to buy, and I've been using my iPhone for the past week or so without a case at all and it's worked just fine, but September 30 is the cutoff, so make a decision by then for sure.

A better question...

Hands-on with troubleshooting firewall corruption

The OS X firewall is a useful and important security feature, and we recommend people enable as many of its features as possible to help ward off the possibility of attacks, especially when connected to public networks. Despite its benefits, as with any software package the firewall is susceptible to corruption that can interfere with its functions, and result in odd behavior. One of these is the notorious self-assigned IP address problem that can plague various network ports in OS X.

In recent comments to TechRadar, he said that while the company has seen Android 2.2 (which, like the rest of Androids distributions, is open-sourced and free for anyone to download) running on tablets, that isnt one of the OSs intended purposes.Froyo is not optimised for use on tablets, said Barra. TUAW iPhone Tips: Typing the Apple symbol, iOS 4...

As you go into this weekend looking for things to do, you might be thinking about how to organize your iOS 4.x iPhone and use the Apple symbol in the process.

The first tip, courtesy of Macenstein, deals with labeling of apps and folders. Back in the iPhone OS 2.x days, you could use the Japanese keyboard to type the Apple symbol. That feature disappeared, but now there's a way to bring back that Apple symbol.

The solution is to create a folder in iOS 4, which is done by dragging one app onto another. Give the folder a name, like "Rename me," then sync with your computer. With your iPhone selected in iTunes 10, click on the Apps tab. There you'll see all of your apps and folders, and you can double-...

TUAW preview: Billabong Surf Trip

Chillingo invited us out to the headquarters of surfwear manufacturer Billabong yesterday for a look at a new iPhone and iPad game called Billabong Surf Trip. The game is designed by a Portugese developer named Biodroid Entertainment (who told me that they've done some work on other consoles, but this is their first title for Apple's iOS). As you may have guessed from the name, the title is sponsored by Billabong, and features the ability to create a surfer and then send him or her around the world to take on the waves.

Before I sat down to play the game, I asked Billabong's PR Director Jim Kempton about why they'd gotten involved in an iPhone game, and he said the goal of the game was to "introduce people to what surfing is about, on the level that we're hoping to cast an interest anyway." You don't have to be a surfer to enjoy the game, but enjoying the game might get you interested in surfing, and thus the Billabong...

WP7 locked for Oct. 11 as Microsoft holds iPhone...

Sources today supported rumors of a Windows Phone 7 launch on October 11 as Microsoft held a mock funeral for the BlackBerry and iPhone. Tipsters said the unveiling, which coincides with a known mid-October target, would be part of a larger open house event where WP7 would be just one of the offerings on show. CNET was told the phones wouldn't necessarily be available the same day, but the US availability may not be until November....

Apple rushing FaceTime-equipped iPad for the...

Apple may be stepping up the release of a camera-equipped iPad to get it out ahead of time, sources claimed on Friday. Although it only just launched in April and supplies have just caught up to demand, AppleInsider understood from a "proven" contact that the tablet was in late testing. If finished on time, it could be ready as soon as the holidays but would arrive no later than the first quarter of 2011, which ends in March....

FaceTime coming to Mac OS X and Windows?

French Mac site Mac4ever reports that iLife ‘11 is likely to be released in the near future and that Apple’s new FaceTime video calling feature may soon become available in Mac OS X and Windows machines.

FaceTime is currently available on the new iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation iPod touch and can only be used over Wi-Fi networks at this time. Such a move would make the cutting-edge feature even more appealing.

FaceTime will evidently be integrated on iChat for Mac OS X users but it is not clear how it will be presented to Windows users.

Rumor: FaceTime on the way for iChat and Windows

Ever since the FaceTime announcement as an 'open platform,' the question's been hanging over us: when do we expect desktop support for the new videoconferencing approach? "Soon," is what French website Mac4ever is reporting today. They have a pretty good track record, so the prediction is worth noting.

The article says Apple will soon release a version of iChat that will allow Apple desktop and laptop owners to video chat to iOS devices with FaceTime. Further, the speculation is that Apple will do the same thing for Windows users wanting to talk to FaceTime users either on Macs or iPhones.

Apple has stated that it expects to see FaceTime protocols widely used. If the rumor is correct, that goal should be well on the way to being fulfilled. I can't wait.

Foxconn's Founder Opens Up About Making iPhones

eldavojohn writes "Bloomberg Businessweek has an article of interest resulting from a three-hour interview with Foxconn founder Terry Gou (single page), whose company manufactures 137,000 iPhones a day. The article profiles Gou's rise to Foxconn but also offers some interesting tidbits you might not know. On why he is not opening factories in the United States, Gou frankly states, 'If I can automate in the US and ship to China, cost-wise it can still be competitive. But I worry America has too many lawyers. I don't want to spend time having people sue me every day.' If you're interested in how a modern day Henry Ford thinks, you can read the rest about the man steering the ship of the world's largest producer of electronics components and China's largest exporter. This unprecedented transparency was part of an agreement Gou made with his customers during his delayed response to an increasing number of Foxconn suicides."

The app as it is today (version 1.8) doesn't offer much to the single player -- the AI makes ridiculously stupid plays -- but for just $0.99 on the App Store, you can get a very good abstract strategy game for two that you can play in just a few minutes anywhere on your iPad or iPhone.

Over-the-air notes syncing option disappears from...

For the iPhone 3G, the biggest new feature for many users under iOS 4.1 is the phone now actually works. Making the iPhone 3G usable under iOS 4 came with some trade-offs before the new OS was even released -- app multitasking and wallpapers didn't make the cut on the older iPhone -- but it looks like a couple more features have been pruned from the iPhone 3G after iOS 4.1.

One missing feature we noticed right away: Spotlight no longer searches through MMS messages on the iPhone 3G after the iOS 4.1 update. Given that disabling Spotlight searching was the most common suggested remedy for poor iPhone 3G performance on earlier builds of iOS 4, this omission is somewhat understandable.

More puzzling, however, is another omission the folks at geek.com noticed:...

OAuth Sign-in Controllers for iOS and Mac OS X...

By Greg Robbins, Software Engineer

(Editor's note: Long-time readers know we sometimes publish posts aimed at programmers, and this is one of those. If you're not a software developer, don't worry. Our usual non-technical stuff will return.)

It’s rare today for any software to live in isolation. And often, applications want to connect to data in your Google Account. Social networks seek access to your Gmail contacts, finance programs try to sync with your Google Finance portfolio, and photo editing software would like to add eyeglasses and mustaches to the photos in your Picasa Web Albums account. But you probably don’t want your photo editing program to be able to download your financial portfolio, spend money with your Google Checkout account, or have access to any of your other personal data.

The fundamental problem is that giving your username and password to a program hands it access to all of your data. Recently, Internet software developers have...

Why Facebook Geo-Targetting Could Mean The End Of...

Checking in, location reporting, geo-status updating - call it what you like, but sharing your location with the world has become one of the most popular movements to hit social networking in recent times. Facebook is the latest application to join the party, allowing users to include their location with their status updates. "Places," as it is called, is nothing new (services like Foursquare have been allowing users to advertise where they are for quite some time now), but it does raise some interesting privacy concerns. Since users share everything about their identity and personal lives with Facebook, just how far could Places plunge us into an Orwellian dystopia where "Big Mark is always watching?"

The BlackBerry may be handed one of its more significant losses as insiders said today that JPMorgan and UBS are working to allow Android and iPhone hardware for their workers. FaceTime headed for Mac OS X and Windows next?

It seems more than a little odd to us that Apple hasn't bothered to make FaceTime compatible with its own longstanding desktop video chat service, iChat, but we've at least supposed that it's an inevitability with whatever upcoming Mac OS X update or software bundle that Apple deems appropriate. Now Mac4Ever, who was spot on with a pile of rumors last year, but hasn't succeeded with its recent prediction of an iLife '11 launch in August, is saying that Apple is prepping FaceTime both for Mac and PC. We don't know if that means building a whole copy of iChat for Windows, or just making FaceTime compatible with some existing PC video chat service, but it would certainly improve the odds of us ever finding a legitimate use for FaceTime.FaceTime headed for Mac OS X and Windows next? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 10 Sep 2010 13:07:00 EDT. FTC to take close look at loosened App Store rules?

Apple's policy reversal on third-party development tools for iOS may yet draw close checks from the Federal Trade Commission, sources tell the Wall Street Journal. The FTC has until now been investigating whether or not an earlier decision -- to block third-party tools -- was unfair, particularly against Adobe and developers cross-compiling from Flash. The technology makes it easier to deploy apps for multiple platforms at the same time, including chief iOS rival Android....

Android usage to surpass BlackBerry, iOS by year end

Android is on its way to taking the silver medal in mobile market share worldwide, and gold in North America—as long as the platform maintains its currently strong growth numbers. According to market research firm Gartner, the mobile world will be dominated by Symbian and Android devices by 2014, with RIM's BlackBerry and Apple's iOS projected to come in third and fourth place, respectively.

Symbian will maintain its market dominance thanks to Nokia's sheer sales volume, while Android will outpace the rest of the competition because of the impending launch of "many new budget Android devices" by the end of 2010 that will help the OS get into the mass market. "Other players, such as Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola, will follow a similar strategy. This trend should help Android become...

When Is Apple Adding FaceTime Support to Computers...

It should have been there when it was first introduced: FaceTime videoconferencing between iPhone/iPod touch and desktop computers. The latest rumor is that it is coming. For Macs, Apple could incorporate FaceTime support in iChat. The article doesn't mention how they are planning to do it on Windows.

This rumor, however, comes from the French site that claimed iLife'11 was coming on August 7, with a new mystery application. Neither the mystery application nor the iLife'11 suite materialized at that date.

However, FaceTime on desktop and laptop computers is only logical. It will happen for sure. The real question of when. That's what we want to know.

Apple's Developer Tools Turnaround 'Great...

cgriffin21 writes "Apple is being praised for loosening of some of the restrictions in its Application Developer Program license agreement that open the door for app developers to work in Flash for the Apple iPhone, iPad and other devices. And no one is happier about the change than Flash-maker Adobe itself. They wrote, 'This is great news for developers and we're hearing from our developer community that Packager apps are already being approved for the App Store. We do want to point out that Apple's restriction on Flash content running in the browser on iOS devices remains in place.'"
Apple also received praise from Google over their reversal, which may have been prompted by an FTC probe. Reader Stoubalou adds that Apple shed more light on the app review process by publishing a list of guidelines (PDF) the violation of which may get an app rejected from the App Store.

Feature: Ars reviews the 6th-generation iPod nano:...

The sixth-generation iPod nano's design marks the largest divergence from the nano line since the device was introduced in 2005. The new device is also the first iPod nano to have a touchscreen interface, and the last iPod with a screen to get a touchscreen interface (not counting the languishing iPod classic, as that would just turn it into an iPod touch). As of now, the nano no longer has the telltale circular click wheel that helped to make the iPod so iconic.

However, the new iPod nano differs from its touchscreen iDevice brethren in that it doesn't run iOS, or at least not a version of iOS that any of us are familiar with so far. In reality, the sixth-generation nano is kind of a mutant—a cross between the old iPod and the new, where you can move things around with your finger but can still only play...

Hands on with VLC Movie-Player for iPad

A roundup of clock apps for the iPad

One of the more surprising app omissions from the iPad was the iPhone's Clock app. It's an extremely useful iPhone app, featuring a world clock, alarm, timer, and stopwatch. Why Apple didn't choose to add this app to the iPad is a mystery for the ages, but at least it's opened up the market for some incredible clock apps for the platform. Let's take a look at some of the better clock apps on the App Store:

Night Stand HD (US$4.99, also available in free Lite version) -- This good looking universal app not only gives you a choice of clocks, but you also have a world clock, multiple alarms, and a stopwatch. You can also see limited weather information right on the clock face. Unfortunately, the current lack of background capabilities on the iPad means you'll have to keep this app running in order for those alarms to ring on time, but...

Hide/show the iTunes Store in iTunes

For infrequent users of the iTunes Store, here is an AppleScript to enable and visit the Store within iTunes, then leave and disable it.
First, go into the System Preferences » Universal Access prefpane and check 'Enable access for assistive devices.'

Then you can download this script and save it to ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/iTunes. This will place it in the Script menu when iTunes is active. You may need to create the iTunes subfolder. You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to the script using Spark [crarko adds: link fixed] or some similar program (not Quicksilver, I don't think it remembers persistent values across uses). This would make the command available even if you don't have iTunes currently open.

The script will enable the iTunes Store in the sidebar of iTunes (...

View bandwidth of iTunes downloads

This may or may not be new but I never noticed it until iTunes 10. I was downloading a podcast and noted that in the Downloads area in the iTunes sidebar the 'X mins remaining' status and clicked on the actual text by accident. Doing this added the current rate as the podcast was being downloaded to the display. Like I said before, this may be old news but definitely cool if it's just been added.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described, in iTunes U as well as podcasts, so I assume it's just a general feature of downloads in iTunes. This has probably been around a while, but I didn't see it documented here. As mentioned in this previous hint, it can be worth it to monitor the bandwidth usage in case you have some other bandwidth-hungry application running.]

iOS 4.1 restores limited Field Test mode

In older versions of the iPhone OS software, it was possible to enter Field Test mode to get a lot of useful data about the cellular connection. This capability was removed in iOS 4.0, and caused some angst while trying to examine the iPhone 4 antenna reception issues.

The ability has been restored, although to a greatly limited degree, with iOS 4.1. Once again, if you dial the number *3001#12345#* in the keypad you will enter FTM. What you will see now is a negative number (presumably representing the signal loss in dB) in the upper left that replaces the cellular signal strength bars. A more negative number means lower relative signal strength, so the -121 I have at the moment is worse than the -92 I had in a different room in the house. Zero would be no signal loss.

Apparently Apple is just one hypno-machine away from total world domination. At least, that's my first impression of their patented iTunes Spiral makeover. It is, as they say, trippy.

I'll say this for the iTunes Spiral; it could save some time. Right now your choices for viewing your library are scads of text or Cover Flow. Both perfectly functional, neither particularly exciting. What Spiral would do is break your music down into three levels of granularity. So if you're looking down a Genre vortex, you could navigate deeper into the Album abyss.
