25 Years Ago Today, Steve Jobs Left Apple [...

On September 16, 1985, seven years after he had started the company with his friend Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs resigned as chairman of Apple Computer. Twelve years later to the day, the company announced that he was back.

In the years leading up to his departure, Steve Jobs had been obsessively working on his personal project within the company: the Macintosh. The company's Apple II, designed largely by Steve Wozniak and debuted in 1977, had been hugely profitable, but subsequent systems like the clunky $10,000 Lisa were not as successful.

With his Macintosh team, Jobs set out to create a machine that would be a triumph not only for the company, but for himself, too. He instilled in his team a sense of creativity and rebellion—its said that he hung a pirate flag in their office (which was in a separate building from the rest of the company) and explained that it was better to be a pirate than to join the Navy. He grew increasingly antagonistic toward Apple's other...

Where are the iPad refurbs? Update: found.

Update: Reader Tim Y. found the iPad refurbs hiding out on Apple's online store. While they are accessible via searching the store, there's no navigation slot for them (or for the iPhone 4, for that matter) under Apple's clearance section.

So it's almost six months after the iPad's US release -- and there are still no iPad refurbs in the Apple Store. At a time when AT&T is already selling refurb iPhone 4's, which just debuted this Summer, iPad refurbs are noticeably absent from normal retail channels.

The iPad, in fact, remains in a launch phase. It will only start hitting major US retailers like Target in October...

Yahoo New Homepage and App for iPad Look Nice [Ipad]

On the right, Yahoo's incoming home page for iPads. Very nice and simple. I guess it will work with any other HTML5 tablet-based web browser. According to Business Insider, they are also releasing a native iPad application, on the left.

Chief Product Officer Blake Irving is saying that Yahoo! is going to push faster and harder on smartphones and tablets than on PCs, making two distinctive experiences for the two class of devices. If they really do this right, that's good news: We need companies to think about customizing their web products' user interfaces to the unique form factors of these platforms. As they become more and more popular, this a move that is not coming soon enough. [Business Insider]

ABC iPad app syncs with My Generation via audio cues

The merger of iPad and television took another step forward with the release of ABC's My Generation Sync, which is the first iOS app to synchronize live with a TV show -- specifically, My Generation, coming this fall from the network that's owned by the company with Steve Jobs as its biggest shareholder.

If you've ever been a "Nielsen Family," you've had a box installed in your house that sends data on your viewing habits back to the Nielsen corporation. It works by monitoring a program's unique "audio watermark" emitted by your TV; human ears can't detect the sounds.

Confirmed: 'iProd 2' is the new Apple TV

iOS 4.1: iPhoto Smart Albums for iPhone 4

With the release of iOS 4.1, Apple has made it easy to create smart albums containing our iPhone 4 photos. This hint shows you what settings to use to create smart albums for your iPhones front and back camera photos.

This is a revisit of my previous hint for making a smart album in iPhoto to keep track of only your new iPhone 4 photos. With the release of iOS 4.1, apple has changed the camera model to 'Apple iPhone 4' making it much easier to filter these photos into smart albums. In addition to that, we can use the camera aperture metadata to filter between front and back camera photos.

The front (FaceTime) camera:

Recover from a problem with an Apple update

I recently performed a security patch along with a Safari update (I believe it was 5.0.1) using Software Update. I ignored the iTunes 10 update that was available. After the update, I could no longer access any websites, webdav iCal shares, or even connect to the Software Update server! I assume that the security update works for most people without doing anything harmful, but the only way I got Internet access back was by installing an earlier combo update at the Apple Store.
I spent all weekend trying everything I could think of. You can see a list of the things I tried in this Apple discussion forum thread. I had even performed a restore from backup from my Time Capsule (but it's possible that I miscalculated the date on which I performed the patch).

Adobe says they've made this preview available so that users can test existing content and new platforms for compatibility and stability. Because this is a preview version of Flash Player, don’t expect it to be as stable as a final release version of Flash Player. Use caution when installing Flash Player "Square" on production machines.

TUAW's Daily App: Unearthed

Honestly, I spent all day yesterday playing Pocket Frogs, so go try that if you haven't yet. But since we covered that one earlier this week, I'll tell you about Unearthed. To be honest, I don't exactly know how it all works. The app is complicated, and getting it to do what you want it to do is half the fun. It's designed to be like a government security app, except there's no five-inch thick manual binder to go along with it. The idea is that the app turns your iPhone into an "anomaly scanner," and with augmented reality, you're tasked with scanning various alien beings in the world around you. It's a little hard to explain, but once you play around with it, it's pretty trippy. You use the iPhone's camera (3GS or better required) to look around the...

Apple on Wednesday released the first external betas of iOS 4.2, which will debut features like AirPlay and AirPrint for iOS devices while also delivering a slew of long-awaited bells and whistles for the iPad, including multi-tasking, folders and threaded mail.

Per AppleInsider, a handful of more subtle refinements will ship along as well:

The biggest new feature for iPhone and iPod touch users is AirPrint, which allows wireless printing via a shared printer, or directly through some HP branded printers. The functionality is accomplished through a new Print Center application that is only available on iOS devices that can multitask, which means the iPhone 3G will not be able to print.

Per sources close to the story, Apple has agreed to implement an opt-in function to allow subscribers to share their personal information with publications. Print publications rely on that information to share demographic data with advertisers.

In late June at E3, Square Enix tantalized fans of Final Fantasy Tactics by revealing that the game would be brought to the iPhone. The company even announced a release date for the game: September 15th. But September 15th has come and gone now without a release for this highly-anticipated title, ... and Square Enix's response to the delay is highly unsatisfactory.

I played the original Final Fantasy Tactics on the PlayStation, and it's one of my all-time favorite games. I didn't play the remake on the PSP because I never really felt compelled to buy Sony's handheld. However, I was excited enough about FFT coming to the iPhone that I set up an iCal reminder to check the App Store today for the game. It hasn't shown up, though, and it's not going to for the foreseeable future. Only two days before the game's supposed release date,...

"Didn't you run over the first iPod nano?" an old friend who I haven't talked to in a decade asked during our recent high school reunion. "That was hilarious."

His statement echoed similar ones that I have heard from both distant friends and strangers consistently for the last five years. In 2005, Apple introduced the first iPod nano, a flash storage-based successor to the then-popular iPod mini. Everyone was curious about it—it was so thin and fragile looking! Could it withstand the punishing experience of everyday use? Could it really compare to the true iPod experience?

That's what we here at Ars set out to discover back then when we reviewed the original iPod nano. Since then, Apple has made annual revisions to the iconic...

Found Footage: iPod touch 4G goes head to head with...

A site called Letem Svetem Applem has put together some performance comparison videos with the iPhone 4 and the new iPod touch, and the results may surprise you. In the startup speed test, the iPad actually beat all of the other iDevices, and the new iPod touch barely beats the iPhone 4 (but all of them were faster than last year's iPhone 3GS, so your upgrade was not in vain). The iPod touch's camera looks slightly darker than the iPhone 4's, and perhaps most interesting, the displays of the iPhone 4 and iPod touch look pretty different. The Retina Display on the iPod touch looks just as sharp, but without the in-plane switching tech found on the iPhone and the iPad, the sides of the display are slightly muddier.

Some of the YouTube comments on the speed video claim that if your iPhone or iPad is stuffed with music, documents, or apps, the speed...

Skyhook sues Google for monopolizing Android...

Skyhook on Wednesday sued Google for allegedly abusing its control over Android to exclude competitors for geolocation services. A Boston-based lawsuit accused Google of preventing Android phone makers from using Skyhook's positioning, such as its Wi-Fi triangulation, and instead requiring them to use Google's own. Motorola was supposedly forced to pull Skyhook from its devices to pass Google's compliance tests and wasn't even given the option of tuning the Skyhook software to meet the guidelines....

Light painting in stop motion with the iPad

This is about the coolest thing done with an iPad since, well, the iPad itself was created. A firm named Dentsu London has used an iPad to create a series of stop motion shots assembled from sequential long exposure light paintings. They created a set of 3D graphics and then programmed the iPad to show a set of cross sections, frame-by-frame, of those graphics. The cross sections were "painted" into the air with long exposure photographs, and then the photographs were all put together into a stop motion animation.

The end effect is just amazing -- don't just watch the beginning on how they did it, make sure you stick around for the film itself. It's a beautiful piece, as well as an ingenious way of using the iPad to create something exceptional. If you're really interested in these...

Twitter: A Potential PR Nightmare

Image via CrunchBase

Im sure by now youve heard that Twitter is getting a face lift, allowing for more information to be available to you with a dual screen look. Twitter has become extremely popular over the years, contributing to a national government election, and allowing fans to get to know their favorite celebrities in 140 characters. We may like knowing what our favorite athlete is eating or what our favorite A-lister thought of so-and-sos dress. They may feel a little more special and even more famous knowing they have over 1 million people following them. Twitter is a great tool, in the hands of the right person.
The micro-blogging network could also be detrimental to someones image. Who knew 140 characters could get you in trouble? More publicists need to pay attention to what their clients are tweeting, including who theyre talking to and how theyre talking to them. One false send and youre on the verge of a public relations nightmare. There have been...

An HTTP Fetcher Class for Mac OS X and iOS Apps

By Greg Robbins, Software Engineer

(Editor's note: Today's blog post is another cool one for programmers in the audience. Non-developer readers, thanks for bearing with us.)

Mac OS X and iOS provide developers with a high-level class, NSURLConnection, that makes interacting with servers pretty easy. NSURLConnection follows the system networking preferences, navigates through proxies, and handles other details just as users expect on their devices. But in applications that require a series of server requests and responses, NSURLConnection can be inconvenient to use. All connections made by an application’s class call back into a single set of delegate methods, and when there are numerous connections to be made, sorting out the responses is a bit of a chore.

So ever since Google’s first Mac application, Gmail Notifier, we’ve used a wrapper around NSURLConnection to make it...

Report: Foxconn making 1.5 iPhones per second

137,000 iPhones per day. That's how many manufacturer Foxconn is reportedly making these days, its chairman tells the press. That's an amazing figure adding up to 50 million iPhones every single year, even as Apple struggles to keep enough hardware in stock. And the process isn't easy, either -- chairman Terry Gou says that the company found out it needed a certain machining rig usually designed only for prototyping in order to stay in line with Apple's strict manufacturing standards. Foxconn ended up buying over 1,000 of the machines at $20k each, even while other manufacturing companies are buying just one.

It's crazy to think about the scale of the operation over there -- not just the equipment, but the workers and organization required to churn out that kind of product....

Apple today announced that it is releasing a beta version of its AirPrint wireless printing for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to members of Apple’s iOS developer program today, and that AirPrint will be included in the free iOS 4.2 software update in November. AirPrint automatically finds printers on local networks and can print text, photos and graphics to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi without the need to install drivers or download software. HP’s existing and upcoming ePrint enabled printers will be the first to support printing direct from iOS devices.

“AirPrint is Apple’s powerful new printing architecture that matches the simplicity of iOS—no set up, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software to download,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’...

iOS 4.2 on iPad preview (video)

So we've just had a chance to take our iPad out for a spin sporting iOS 4.2... and it's pretty great. The addition of multitasking, folders, and big improvements in mail (amongst other things) finally make the device feel more like a computer and less like a gigantic iPhone. Ironic really, since these updates rolled out to the iPhone first. In our brief use of the new and improved iPad (and particularly with multitasking), we're impressed to see that there doesn't seem to be any lag or slowdown on the device while swapping between apps (despite the smaller amount of RAM on board here) or throwing together folders. We're pretty heartened to see performance matching what we've come to expect on our iPhone 4 -- admittedly we had reservations about what the experience would be like. Folders are an especially notable inclusion here due to the pure silliness of scrolling through multiple iPad pages, and we're happy to see them intact on the bigger device. This is going to be a huge...
