Web Users Now Spend More Time on Facebook Than Google

We already know that Facebook is the webs biggest time sink. If you look at the average amount of time (according to Nielsen) users spend on the social network, Facebook is a clear winner over sites such as Google or Yahoo. Now, according to comScore, Facebook is also first when it comes to the total amount of time users are spending on the site. In August, U.S. web users spent 41.1 million minutes on Facebook, which was about 9.9% of their entire web-surfing time in that month. In this same period, people spent 39.8 million minutes on all of Googles sites, and those include another huge online timesink YouTube.comScore puts Yahoo in third place, with U.S. web users spending 37.7 million minutes on its sites, which was about 9.1% of their web surfing time in August. The numbers are even more impressive when you consider that Facebook had just overtaken Yahoo in July, and in August last year U.S. web surfers had spent less than 5% of their online time on the social networking service...

Psystar is dead. Long live Quo Computer

While we all know the story of Psystar, the company that crashed and burned by loudly selling non-Apple Macintosh computers with OS X installed, a much quieter and more polite company named Quo Computer seems to be doing just fine. Their mission is to get computers that can run the Macintosh OS into as many hands as possible, and they go about it in a much more reasonable way.

Although their PR waxes eloquently about the virtues of using a Mac, Quo creates computers that can run any operating system, be it Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, or any combination of the three. In June of last year, they opened up a store located at 2401 West Main Street, Alhambra, California as a small mom and pop operation in a section of town that is going through revitalization. At the store, they offer classes including one on how to switch from a PC to a Mac. Their site speaks of getting free computers to low-...

PopCap making 25% of business in mobile space, sees...

PopCap's Dave Roberts spoke with TechFlash recently, and revealed that about 25% of the company's profits are coming from the mobile division. You'd think that the iPhone would be a huge part of that (and it is), but it turns out the iPhone isn't alone -- Java/BREW versions of the games are also very popular for older wireless phones. In that sense, PopCap is a different iPhone game company -- rather than depending on Apple and the App Store for profits, it's a true cross-platform developer.

Roberts says the company is aiming for social gaming next -- Zuma Blitz is going to be the next big push, and PopCap is very tuned in to the relationship between the iPhone and Facebook. "Our customers love it," Roberts says about combining iPhone games with...

Steve Young Football for iPad ads spoof 90s...

Apparently there is an iPad game behind these crazy commercials, but we posted them mainly because they're hilarious. The spot above will be familiar to anyone who grew up in the '90s as a spoof of the old Crossfire commercials that took a mechanical board game way too seriously. Pretty cool.

Tearing apart an old Apple TV just for the heck of it

My "love" for the original Apple TV is well-documented. I purchased a 40 GB model not long after the device hit the market, and found it not to my liking. I hated how I had to slowly sync everything to the device, it had little space to begin with (yeah, I know I should have just swapped out the HD for a bigger model), it ran hot, and the UI was never up to Apple standards in my humble opinion.

If you run into issues, especially reoccurring ones, you should report them via the Feedback link in the lower-left corner of the Calendar interface at www.me.com/calendar. Providing feedback will help improve MobileMe Calendar and allow engineers to better isolate issues and ways of improving the new MobileMe Calendar.

Note: You will not receive a response to submissions via the beta Feedback link.

This article should help address issues that you have already reported via feedback or that are interrupting use.

GetGlue goes iPad

GetGlue users who have iPads have a reason to get happy today -- there's an official GetGlue iPad app available in the App Store. We talked about the Glue social network and iPhone app when it debuted a few months ago, and Glue is now quite popular. It's great to see the GetGlue app on the big screen now, and you can even get a special "iPader" sticker (one of the common bonuses for achievements in GetGlue) for using your iPad to check in.

The free app does an outstanding job of utilizing the extra real estate on the iPad display, and makes it much easier to follow what your friends are watching, reading, or thinking about. As noted in a phone call about GetGlue that I participated in yesterday, the new app...

Multiple applications folders in OS X

Despite this, the applications run fine and there seems to be no difference between the two folders.

TUAW review: EpicWin for iPhone

As a gamer and productivity fetishist, I've been anticipating EpicWin for iPhone since we first saw the app's trailer. It aims to enhance the drudgery of a to-do list with elements of a fantasy role-playing game like World of Warcraft, thereby adding a bit of fun to your daily tasks. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and, while it's fun in a I'm-gaming-while-I-should-be-working way, EpicWin feels unfinished. The developers have promised (and delivered) new features via updates, but EpicWin still feels like an internal beta. Here's what I found.

Choose your character

Like many fantasy role-playing games, the first thing you've got to do when launching EpicWin is create your character. There are five to choose from, all familiar to the genre: a dwarf,...

Bloomberg Businessweek has just dropped an incredibly up-close look at controversial Chinese electronics supplier Foxconn and its founder, Terry Gou. It's the most thorough look to date at one of the most powerful—and intriguing—manufacturers in the world.

What's most interesting about the eight-page spread, aside from the details of Gou's own story and how intertwined it is with Foxconn itself, is the degree of access Businessweek was allowed. I would've thought a company more known for its employee suicide than its partnerships with the largest electronics companies in the world would be...

The iPod Nano Watch Is Here and It Is Glorious [...

Everyone knew it the moment they saw it. Hell, even Steve Jobs alluded to it when he was unveiling the thing. The new multitouch iPod Nano was made to be strapped to a watch band. Here it is, for $17.

OK, so there's still the issue of having headphones plugged into your watch at all times. And the limits of the Nano's looks-like-iOS-but-can't-run-apps-like-iOS operating system. But these things are pretty minor when you consider that this time next week you could be wearing an IPOD as a WATCH. Imagine the look on your 2001 self's face if you told them that in under a decade you'd be wearing one of those iPod things on your wrist. It'd be a look of incredulity. And longing!

The 22mm Maratac Nylon band slips through the Nano's clip and is available in a variety of colors, to make sure you're all nice and coordinated. Just think: "Oh excuse me...

Apple HDR head to head with two top competitors

I recently expressed surprise that Apple has dipped into the world of HDR (high dynamic range) photography. It's a great upgrade for the camera, and will help users get better pictures if they use the feature wisely and at the right time.

tweetmeme_url='http://www.tuaw.com/2010/09/09/apple-hdr-head-to-head-with-two-top-competitors/';tweetmeme_source='tuaw';
Megan Lavey has just done a nice summary of what the Apple HDR feature can do, and it's worth a look. So what about the HDR apps that were already available for the iPhone? How does the Apple version stack up to what are probably the two best paid HDR apps? Has Apple made the paid apps irrelevant?

To test them all I took some pictures in challenging...

Did FTC Probe Cause Apple to Change App Rules? [...

Apple's surprising announcement that it'll allow third-party developer tools for the iPhone and iPad may cause issues in the federal investigation into whether the restrictions were anti-competitive.

Apple's unexpected announcement Thursday that it would let programmers use third-party tools to write apps for the iPhone and iPad may deflate a federal investigation into whether the restrictions were anti-competitive by making it difficult or ill-advised for developers to write programs for competing smartphones and tablets.

The FTC reportedly opened an investigation into the ban this spring, and, according to an anonymous app developer, FTC attorneys have been talking this summer to app developers about whether the ban makes it less likely that they will make apps for competing platforms such as Google's Android mobile OS and Windows 7 Mobile OS, among others. The FTC has wide...

Apple Newton to be reborn as iPhone case

Isn't it nice when siblings get along? Here's an idea for using a dead, hollowed-out Newton Message Pad as an Phone case. Case hacker Charles Mangin has had success with other projects, like the Mac Plus G4, the Mac mini stuffed into an Apple Disk II floppy drive and the iNewt. So far he's only completed a "sketch" of the project, but given his past work, we're sure he can pull it off.

This mod will obviously add a lot of bulk to the iPhone (and destroy a Newt), but who cares? The whole point is the fun and marriage of the...

Case study: Griping about signal quality can produce...

For most iPhone owners, it seems like AT&T is deaf to our complaints about signal quality. It appears, however, that griping loudly and repeatedly to the company does have an effect.

I live in the suburbs south of Denver and my signal quality is pretty good. However, whenever my wife and I have gone to Colorado Rockies baseball games in the last few years (we're season ticket holders), we've had awful service at the ballpark. Although the signal strength indicator would show five bars, it was impossible to do much of anything with our iPhones or iPads. Even trying to send out text messages would fail, and attempts to use the MLB At-Bat app in the ballpark were laughable to the point...

This video has been around for quite a long time, but my guess is that you haven't seen it. It posits how future computers will used for education and literacy. Watching it you'll be taken by how much they got right and how other concepts got short shrift. One surprising thing is that it focuses almost totally on voice input and doesn't mention the concept of a touch screen interface. Instead it displays a trackball-type device with four buttons that doesn't presage multi-touch devices. A good deal of the footage was taken from 1987's Knowledge Navigator video which got a lot more play at the time.

Panasonic's iPhone-powered augmented reality T-...

This little video shows off what most of the augmented reality features we've seen so far look like; they're cool, but not all that practical or useful. The idea is supposed to be an ad campaign for Panasonic's 3D televisions, so they gave away special AR shirts and a free iPhone app. If you find one of the shirts in the real world, you can point the iPhone app at it, and instead of just the AR code, you'll see an actual animated animal sticking its head out, framed in a Panasonic television.

It's a cool effect, but of course, it's totally cosmetic. You can't actually interact with the animals at all (other than simply taking pictures through the viewfinder and sending them off on Twitter). And it's an ad for a separate piece of tech, so it's nothing to actually do with the iPhone or even Apple. But still, every experiment with AR gets us closer to...

Safari extension highlight: Minimal Gmail

With the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website over the last few days, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.

Minimal Gmail is my new favorite Safari extension. It allows you to "clean up" a lot of the GMail interface, including turning off several items that you can't disable any other way.

Yes, that means that you can disable ads, although to be honest I really haven't noticed the ads in Gmail for a long time. However, now that they are gone, it is nice to have that space for reading the message, especially if you are on a smaller screen. What's more exciting is the ability to hide things that I never use such as the "Invite" box. I mean, come on, when is the last time anyone invited someone else to Gmail? I'm guessing it was 2005. Also, I never use Gmail chat through the webpage, and...

Apple is into the idea of users sharing photos—the gorgeous stacks interface that was given top billing at the iPad launch event made that clear. Now they're thinking about how to make sharing photos easier from the couch.

Their patent describes a display with two distinct modes: a "'streaming' display mode" for video and a "frame-buffered" display mode for better quality still images. Patently Apple gets into the nitty gritty:

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a system with a display that may operate in at least two display...

TUAW Mailbag: your iOS 4.1 tips and tribulations

The first one (above) is actually a bug with iMovie 1.1, although the app was updated yesterday and requires iOS 4.1. As you can see, reader Sean P. is still seeing a glitch in iMovie for iPhone that makes clip trimming a haphazard affair.

Eric B. reports that the headphones he received with his "iphone 2g" (we're thinking he meant the 3G) now work, whereas before 4.1 but after 4.0 they did not.

John T. tells us "the iOS4.1 upgrade somehow 'recovered' clued 2+ weeks of lost voicemails that I really wish I had received, well, 2 weeks ago." He reports others have seen this as well -- have you?

Joseph T. says there's good news for Bluetooth headset users who jam out on their headsets: "...the new AVRCP profile allows Bluetooth headsets to FINALLY skip forward and rewind."

A few of us noticed it, but Jonathan L. wrote in to point out the icon for "deleting" an email in...

Apple's App Store Review Guidelines: Some juicy...

We've been busily going through the App Store Review Guidelines that Apple released to developers this morning, and we're surprised (and happy) to find direct, blunt language which makes Apple's requirements crystal clear. Here are a few gems.

Line 8 is a standout: "We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don't need any more Fart apps. If your app doesn't do something useful or provide some form of lasting entertainment, it may not be accepted."

From line 9: "If your App looks like it was cobbled together in a few days, or you're trying to get your first practice App into the store to impress your friends, please brace yourself for rejection. We have lots of serious developers who don't want their quality Apps to be surrounded by amateur hour." You'll remember Steve also said "amateur hour" during last week's press event.

Here's line 10: "We will reject Apps for any content or behavior that we believe is over the...

Carry more iPad data with you, using HyperDrive

No matter what size iPad or other portable device you get, many times it seems that you're going to hit that storage limit and find yourself aching for more space. The HyperDrive may not fix that problem for you, but it may be handy in certain circumstances.

Using the portable HyperDrive and the iPad Camera Connection Kit, one can transfer movies and photos onto the iPad from either the HyperDrive's internal storage or via memory cards attached to it. Since the iPad only allows attached storage of 32GB or less, the HyperDrive sections off its on-board storage into 32GB "folders," each of which is viewable using the iPad Photos application.

It's definitely a hacky way to go about transferring data to your iPad while on the go, but at least it doesn't require jailbreaking to use (if that's a concern of yours). The usefulness of the HyperDrive seems...

Apple Relaxes iOS Development Tool Restrictions

An anonymous reader writes "Earlier this year Apple caused major upset among developers by updating the iPhone developer program license with clause 3.3.1. It basically stopped the use of cross-platform compilers, meaning Adobe Flash could not be used to develop an app for the App Store. The move also put into doubt which other development platforms could be used and generally caused a lot of confusion. Apple has just significantly relaxed that policy and allowed for the use of development tools, as long as 'the resulting apps do not download any code.'"

Apple loosens reins, allows 3rd party iOS dev tools...

Here's a surprise we didn't expect this morning -- or ever, for that matter -- Apple has changed its stance on iOS app development, now allowing all tools "...as long as the resulting apps do not download any code." Theoretically, this would include Adobe Flash CS5 but certainly includes tools like Unity. [Note that while the Flash CS5 authoring environment may be kosher, this rule still excludes the Flash browser plugin due to the no-downloaded-code clause. -Ed.]

In addition, Apple has published the App Store Review Guidelines for the very first time. We'll be anxious to hear what developers have to say after giving those guidelines a good read.

A Taste of What’s New in the Updated App Store...

Apple today announced several significant changes to the iOS developer agreement, and a new document called the App Store Review Guidelines. The latter is intended as a plain-English guide to the rules and guidelines Apple is using to determine which apps to accept into the store — a guide that has been sorely lacking to date.

These documents are only available to registered iOS developers, however, so here’s a look at some of what’s new.

Section 3.3.1 — Third-Party Developer Tools and Languages

This is the section that was changed a few months ago, with the release of iOS 4.0, to ban the use of third-party developer tools. In the 4.0 version of the agreement, section 3.3.1 read (italics added):

3.3.1 Applications may only use Documented APIs...
