It's hard to believe, but TUAW TV Live has been appearing on your screens just about every Wednesday for 10 months now. I want to thank all of you who have joined in every week for an hour of discovery and discussion; you've made it a pleasure to produce the show.

This week, I'll be talking about a variety of topics: what would be good to see in iWork and iLife updates, iPad and iPhone apps (both good and bad), more iPad and iPhone cases, a demo of how to quickly make an e-book that will work in iBooks, and additional topics as well. And we'll even have some fun giveaways on today's show.

To watch and participate in today's show, just come back to TUAW at about 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT), and I'll have full instructions on how to view the livestream and use the chat.

Nokia failing due to anti-software culture, iPhone...

Nokia's continuing decline in share is the result of a fundamental misunderstanding of software and the iPhone in particular, multiple current and former workers explained today. The company is entirely built around its hardware teams and gives them final say, even when it interferes with the actual experience of the software. Each phone design is isolated into a group and sets its own deadline rather than making sure the software is in sync....

Rumor: Apple will announce newspaper subscription...

Mercury News is reporting that Apple will soon announce a plan for subscribing to newspapers with the iPad. While Apple did not comment, the Mercury News speculated on Apple's deal with Roger Fidler, head of digital publishing at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute. Fidler believes that Apple will take up to a 30% cut of subscriptions on top of 40% of ad revenue.

In exchange, the newspapers' developers will be allowed to provide customers with a way to share statistics on just who they are. The opt-in feature will allow Apple to share user demographic data with the publishers, which they could then direct towards their marketing efforts. "[Publishers] want the data of their customers so they can integrate it into their circulation database so they know who their customers are," said Fidler.

It's all speculation, so don't get...

Dear Aunt TUAW: location voodoo

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I've recently become the proud owner of a 3rd generation iPod touch. I found the Nike+ app that uses some strange GPS/wifi-triangulation scheme to locate me and how far I run/walk.

How does the iPod touch do this? Is it magnets? Smoke? Mirrors? Is this a reliable location-reckoning system? There are a lot of rumors abounding on the Interwebs, and I know you'll get to the bottom of it, Auntie.

Love & tickles,

Your nephew Marc H.

What’s Next for Nokia?

Here’s the situation facing Nokia’s new CEO, Stephen Elop:

  • Nokia needs to settle on one software platform for mobile devices, very soon.

  • None of their Symbian-based stuff should be the choice.

  • The only other thing they have in-house is MeeGo.

  • It‚Äôs too late for them to start over from scratch, and I don‚Äôt think they have the software chops to do so even if they did have time.

So it’s either MeeGo, or something from outside the company. The top two choices: Android and Windows Phone 7. Given that Elop comes to Nokia from Microsoft has led some to wonder whether they’ll go with Windows Phone 7.

Nokia’s problem — and I’ve heard this same story from at...

Major Subscription Newspapers Heading to Your iPad...

Apple will give the ailing newspaper biz welcome news with an iPad subscription option, the San Jose Mercury News reports. The deal will likely see Apple taking a slice of both subscription and advertising revenues, instead of a flat fee.

Interestingly, Roger Fidler of University of Missouri's Donald W. But while newspapers are of course eager to hop aboard the iPad money train, Fidler speculates they may be anxious about crossing over too quickly: "Most publishers don't want to see a rapid migration to apps without a comparable growth in advertisement revenue from tablet editions. That would be disastrous." [San Jose...

A Week With the New iPods [IPod]

After spending seven days living with our new iPods, we're gonna let them stay. As far as media-slinging sidekicks go, they're pretty good. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows.

iPod Touch: Multimedia Life-Partner

It's easy to say that the new iPod Touch is the best iPod Touch ever. (It is.) It is un-possibly thin—so thin that you release a slow gasp as you peel it out of its snug acrylic womb. The way the polished chrome back bends space around it renders it thinner still, like you're holding a screen imprinted into the air in front of you. (At least, until it's scuffed and scratched and nicked into reality.) You only get a true sense of its dimensions when you plug it in for the first time: It's exactly thick enough to accommodate the holes for a dock connector and...

In previous versions of iTunes 'Go to Current Song' would frustratingly take you only to the Genius Mix window, so if you wanted to select another song from that particular album or artist quickly you couldn't do it.

The window switching behavior only works with songs playing from a Genius Mix.
If the Library view is set to List or Cover Flow, invoking 'Go to Current Song' will swap between Genius Mixes and Library view just like you'd expect. If the view in Library is set to Album List or Grid then invoking 'Go to Current Song' will default the view to List. The only exception is if the previous view before setting it to Grid was Cover Flow. In this...

4 Ways I Compose Posts to Drive Millions of...

A Guest Post by Neal Rodriguez.
With the release of the new Digg on August 25th, anybody with the ability to understand how a story, which is promoted to the popular section, is composed, has an edge in attaining viral exposure ranging from tens of thousands to millions of pageviews. Diggs users constitute a large proportion of bloggers. Thus stories promoted to their popular section, which was previously their homepage and now the Top News page, can attain anywhere from less than 10 to hundreds of links pointing to their websites. Digg also has millions of users; many of whom visit websites that reach the popular section at a rapid rate. My blog went down when I promoted my interview with Ben Huh The Most Popular SFW & NSFW Failblog Pics of the Decade to the popular section and more than 1,000 visitors loaded the page in the first few minutes after reaching the front page.

TUAW's Daily App: Rocketeer

Nope, this isn't a movie adaptation (though I'd like to play that game, too). Instead, it's a physics puzzler that has you tossing little rocket-riding guys around planets of various sizes, with gravitational effects to match. The graphics are simple but effective, and the game is surprisingly forgiving -- you get as many chances to try and throw the little guys around as you need, but fewer tries means a better score. There are 80 levels to go through, but play will go pretty quickly. This game has "just one more try" written all over it.

It's only 99 cents on the App Store, and for a cheap, physics-based thrill, it delivers. There's also an iPad version available (also for 99 cents) if you'd rather play it there. It could probably be a...

Can Intel Compete in a Mobile ARMs Race? [Fight]

Both Apple's iPhone and iPad and Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips are based on ARM architecture, as are almost all cell phone processors. But where is Intel and the x86? Can the world's largest semiconductor company thwart the public's embrace of ARM?

Electronics are shrinking faster than Las Vegas housing prices, the market for 2D kiddie flicks, and Lindsey Lohan's showbiz career. But for electronics, at least, shrinkage is good. Today's cell phones, tablets, and other trendy mobile gadgets would be impossible without the miniaturized electronics of system-on-chip (SoC) processors.

Indeed, SoCs are all the rage in today's gadget-loving tech circles. So why is Intel nowhere to be found?

SoCs: Your Basic Primer

SoCs cram essential system functions into a single chip. Ideally, the SoC would be the only chip, but few SoCs are so well integrated. Usually, a few smaller chips must be added for additional functions. This adds bulk, and in a mobile gadget...

Mixed economic news made for an uncertain market Tuesday, with gold hitting record highs in a classic sign of investor uncertainty. However, Apple bucked the trend, with its share price closing at $268.06, up US$1.02, after a day of volatile trading that at one time put its price at $268.33, up $1.29. This is the first time Apple exceeded the $268 mark since June 30, although it has hit the $260 mark repeatedly since an overall decline in more recent months. Could it mark the beginning of an upward climb for Apple prices once again? That's not quite clear yet.

Greg's bite: super big Wi-Fi zones coming?

By Greg Mills

The FCC, the agency that controls radio frequencies in the US, is about to open up some long wave frequencies in the 700 MHz range that are now available due to the digital TV frequency changes last year. The frequencies are particularly valuable since they penetrate buildings and go further with the same amount of radio energy as shorter wave frequencies that don't go nearly so far, or through walls very well. Look for miles of transmission distances instead of hundreds of feet.

He said Google TV would be the "full internet" coupled with a traditional TV, featuring the complete Chrome browser as well as supporting Flash.

Otellini said he still thought Apple TV and Google TV could co-exist, though, because they appeal to two different audiences. Apple's device will appeal to his "mom" because it's "simplistic," whereas Google's device will...

Cops hacking iPhones for information

I used to think that if I ever got hit by a car while out and about (God forbid, of course), the most useful place to find identifying information would be in my wallet. But that's not really the case any more. As cops are learning these days, the best place in a person's pockets to learn about them is their iPhone. Not only is the phone full of contact information (and indeed, I've included an "ICE" number on every phone I've ever had), but it's also got lots of other information about me, including where I've been lately, what kinds of things I've searched for, and even what apps I've used and how often.

Besides the obvious places (in the apps themselves), there's a lot of information that you as a user don't have access to. iOS apparently caches both screenshots and text used while multitasking and spell...

Dear Aunt TUAW: dock my iPhone to my iPad

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I wish I could dock my iPhone right into the side or back of a large iPad screen. And then have the iPad run off my phone. That way I could have a large screen when I need it. But when I leave the house for a walk, I could take the smaller device (the iPhone) out and carry it in my pocket.

Love and snuggles,

Your nephew Gary

Unity takes a bow on Apple's third-party...

When Apple first passed out those development restrictions on using third-party platforms to create iOS apps, Unity was one of the third-party services that could have been frozen out (though Flash was obviously in everyone's minds). The team behind the popular game development environment assured everyone Unity was safe, but according to the rules as stated, the rest of us weren't so sure.

Now that Apple has officially relaxed that policy, however, Unity's David Helgason is doing the equivalent of a victory dance on the company's official blog, saying that Unity respects Apple for "coming to the right conclusion, and in our eyes it's best to let bygones be bygones!" Yeah, he's kind of excited...

Mmmm... new flavors of DODOcase iPad case are...

Remember the DODOcase? It was perhaps the first iPad case that we reviewed, a beautiful handmade Moleskine-like case made with traditional bookbinding methods. The case single-handedly revived the art of bookbinding in San Francisco, and it's sparked a handful of competitors.

For most of the product's short life so far, the interior paper in the case has been red. Now the company will be providing a full spectrum of 11 colors (including red) to purchasers. Craig Dalton, co-founder of DODOcase, sent us a bunch of glamor shots of the cases that we've collected into a gallery to make you drool.

An interesting note about the bookplate inside the cover of every DODOcase. Dalton noted that "We introduced the bookplate after we realized we couldn't possibly hand sign every one that went...

Unreal Engine now able to make iOS apps

With Apple's recent decision to ease off on its third-party app creation tools restrictions, gamers are in for some very cool and interesting developments. At the Korea Games Conference, Epic Games announced that the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) will have the ability to generate iOS games and other applications.

The UDK is freely available and has the ability to churn out incredible looking environments, such as the Epic Citadel tech demo you might have downloaded or at least gazed upon in wonder.

If the gameplay of the final, released version of the Citadel demo is as smooth and playable as what was shown at the most recent Apple press event, there's no doubt we'll see even more amazing things come from what developers can churn out with the UDK...

Mac OS X beta was released ten years ago yesterday

Happy (belated) birthday today to Mac OS X. Yes, the OS itself actually released to the public on March 24, 2001 (which means its actual "birthday," in my mind, isn't until next March), but Macworld points out that, on September 13, 2000, Steve gave us the very first peek at the foundation of modern Apple computing at the Apple Expo in Paris. That's ten years ago yesterday -- we never were all that good with remembering birthdays.

Macworld lists out the ten most significant contributions of the OS to the Mac experience, but things like the Time Machine and Spotlight are on there, and of course, those weren't introduced until much later. The OS itself was actually announced six days after the year 2000 started, and the Apple Expo announcement was the beta reveal. Steve Jobs had...

Analyst Shaw Wu with Kaufman Bros. says that, while Apple is likely taking a hit by giving away free cases and bumpers to iPhone 4 buyers (and the company is even extending the offer after the deadline to anyone who calls AppleCare), the program will likely be a win in the long run. Obviously, customers appreciate getting a free case (and a "fix" for the "antennagate" issue), but Wu says that even shareholders will benefit. Apple has set aside $175 million for the case program, which sounds like a lot, but it's a drop in Apple's $45.8 billion cash bucket, and a fix for the issue may eventually add as much as 45 cents to Apple's share price this...
