First look: Fuze Meeting extends remote presentation...

Modern meetings are a marvel. With strong competition in the remote presentation/conferencing product space, we now have plenty of capable and feature-rich platforms that offer affordable (sometimes free) remote meetings, most with a good Mac compatibility story to tell. The catch, of course, is that all these technologies depend on Java, Flash/AIR or a bespoke browser plugin to deliver the goods -- meaning that the iPad and iPhone are largely left out of the fun.

Given the demand, it's clear why the Adobe Connect iPhone client and WebEx player for iPad deliver meeting attendance options for iDevices; who wouldn't want to attend a web meeting from the beach...

Restart the Flash plugin without quitting Safari

Safari will often get stalled out and need to be restarted. In many cases, this can be traced to the Flash plugin getting overloaded. You can quite simply restart just the Flash plugin and make Safari work properly again.
You will need to use the Terminal to quit the WebKitPluginHost process. Safari sees that this process has died and automatically restarts it. Refreshing a page that was using the Flash plugin will then reload the plugin.

I have had Safari doing the beach ball of death and used this trick and it fixes it immediately.

  • Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications
  • Type ps -ax | grep WebKitPluginHost
  • This will return something that looks like this:
    16154 ?? 11:37.18 /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/WebKitPluginHo ...

Another way to make a new tab in Safari

I accidentally stumbled on this one today when I mis-clicked a tab in Safari 5.

Double-clicking the empty space in the Tab Bar just to the right of an open tab in Safari will create and open a new tab. Not sure how new this is, but I can't believe I have never thought to try this method before!

This is an addition to the other well-known ways of opening new tabs:

  • Command + T.
  • Control + Click (or Right Clicking) the empty space to the right of your tab(s) and selecting 'New Tab.'
  • Clicking the small '+' sign on the far right of the Tab Bar.
  • Control + Click (or Right Clicking) a URL, and selecting the 'Open in New Tab' option.
  • Command + Click a URL.

I'm sure there are probably a couple more ways to do this, but my most common are by far the first and last methods.

[crarko adds: I've seen all the other methods mentioned, but this one is new to me,...

TUAW's Daily App: Phases

Phases is one of those apps that has a lot of information you wouldn't really think of or need -- until you actually have an app available to give it to you. Basically, Phases tells you everything you need to know about the moon, from when it wanes and waxes, rises and sets, and when and where it appears in the sky. Sure, it might not be the most pressing information to have, but it's kind of fun to check and see if it really is a full moon out, or find out just when the moon will be up in the evening.

And you don't even need an Internet connection -- the app has a database of over 20,000 cities, so even if you can't hook up to the 'net, you can still get information from the app. It's just 99 cents in the store right now, so if the clean design and surprising amount of data available in this...

Rumor: Apple purchased Polar Rose facial recognition...

It’s the stuff Apple buys out that makes future technology speculation kind of fun.

Per TechCrunch, Apple is rumored to have bought a Swedish company Polar Rose. The company has created technology for facial recognition, which could allow for software and devices to recognize unique users.

Though neither party has officially confirmed the purchase, Polar Rose offers a number of products based on its technology, including FaceCloud, which allows facial recognition for Web services, and FaceLib, which brings the functionality to mobile phones.

One of the company’s products, dubbed Recognizr, could take a photo of a user and recognize that same person when shown on video. In a video demonstration, the application places social networking sites associated with that person around their face when seen via a mobile phone’s video camera.

Polar Rose is a small...

Kindle ad goes on the offensive against the iPad

Amazon's taken a leaf out of Apple's advertising book (Mac vs PC, anyone?) by going head to head with the iPad maker in the most recent Kindle television ad. Most noticeably, the spot delivers a low blow to the iPad's comparatively poor screen visibility in direct sunlight. As far as ads go it's rather ingenious, taking some of the best tricks out of the old advertising, uh, book.

In short, a guy sunbathes in a gray t-shirt (geeky), but can't quite read his "iPad" due to the sunlight. On the deck chair next to him lies a beautiful, bikini clad woman sunbathing while reading her Kindle with a pair of sunglasses on! The geeky guy asks the beautiful woman how she's reading in the sunlight, she confidently...

If iPad Wants to Be All the E-Reader It Can Be ...

There's one thing that Apple's iPad needs more than a camera for FaceTime video calling, and that's a real solution for old-school magazine and newspaper publishers. The iPad is a do-it-all device -- Web, email, e-books, games, video, music -- but it still has a few problems. For instance, for active book readers, it's hard to argue that the iPad is the best solution. The iPad is heavy, and its screen isn't so great in broad daylight. At $139, the new Amazon Kindle is more flexible. It's lighter, which means it's easier to hold for hours on end.

SMARTReporter 2.5.3 - Hard drive pre-failure warning...

SMARTReporter 2.5.3SMARTReporter is an application that can warn you of some hard disk drive failures before they actually happen! It does so by periodically polling the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard disk drive. S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a technology built into most modern hard disk drives that acts as an "early warning system" for pending hard disk drive problems. SMARTReporter can notify you of impending hard disk drive failures by sending e-mails, displaying a warning dialog or executing an application. The current status of your hard disk drives is always displayed through the customizable menu item. Because SMARTReporter relies on the S.M.A.R.T. implementation of Mac OS X, it only supports ATA, SATA or eSATA hard disk drives, if you want S.M.A.R.T. support for your FireWire hard disk drive, send feedback to Apple. Please note that a S.M.A.R.T. alert doesn't...

Blind user explains why he loves the iPhone

Here's a wild little story that made its way around the blogonets this past weekend -- it was originally posted in June, but it got recirculated on Twitter, and we first heard it from Steve Troughton-Smith. Austin Seraphin is a blind person, and he says that getting an iPhone changed his life forever -- he considers Apple's iDevice to be "the greatest thing to happen to the blind for a very long time, possibly ever." Really high praise, especially considering that we've heard both good and bad about the iPhone in terms of accessibility.

Seraphin's story is a great read, so I just suggest you head...

St. Clair Software has launched App Tamer, a new Mac utility that can automatically pause applications to help reduce CPU usage and improve battery life. The application works by pausing applications when a user switches to another task, freeing up additional resources, and then restarts any working tasks when the app is brought back into the foreground. App Tamer comes pre-configured to automatically pause Safari, Firefox, and Chrome, while other applications can be setup by users. Users can also view a graphical history of CPU usage, in addition to the average perc...

Official Etch A Sketch case makes iPad even more...

We've seen just about every type of iDevice case ever made, but this one takes the prize for originality.

Based on the famous Ohio Art Etch A Sketch magic screen drawing slate, the Etch A Sketch iPad Case ($39) from Headcase is very realistic looking, down to the cheesy gold paint on the logo. The case should be realistic, as it is officially licensed by Ohio Art.

There are some differences between the case and the real Etch A Sketch: the white knobs won't act as cursor control on your cursor-less iPad, the case has a couple of indentations for the ambient light detector and home button, and the battery life on the original Etch A Sketch is much better. Oh, and the original Etch A Sketch is $17.99, while an iPad costs considerably more.

Check out the gallery below for more shots of this clever iPad case.

No Comment: The iPhone of night clubs

Um, yeah. That seems about right. San Francisco local blog SFist spotted this one outside of a nightclub over on Polk Street in that fair city, and we'll go ahead and repost it here for your smirking amusement with no comment. Even if you're fine with your iPhone's reception, you have to admit that's an excellent pun.

Foursquare app gets a version bump

Being the geek that I am, I always have time to annoy my wife by checking into venues with Foursquare whenever we go somewhere. The free location-based social networking iPhone app gained even more awesomeness (their description, not mine) today with the release of version 2.0.

What's new? A to-do list for organizing your explorations. You can search for a location, and then add it to your to-do list. This would be handy for reminding yourself about restaurants that friends have tipped you off to. To-dos can also be added via websites, if they embed the button on their page (think Instapaper for location-based to-dos).

Another new feature is that friends, tips, and to-do items can now be displayed on a map, nice for figuring out where you were planning on going, where your friends have gone off to, and what you were going to do...

FaceTime goes missing in Saudi Arabia, much of...

Update 8am Tues: Several commenters have raised points about this story, most of which fall into two categories: "I already have an iPhone in Country X and FaceTime works fine" & "I work for the cell carrier in Country Y and we're not blocking FaceTime."

We appreciate the feedback, but neither of these data points is directly connected to the story. For users who already have iPhones in the affected countries, you didn't buy them there -- at least not officially -- and gray-market or unlocked phones from other regions would naturally have FaceTime. From the cell carrier perspective, 'not blocking FaceTime' is irrelevant, since FaceTime is Wi-Fi only and does not transmit over 3G. One point that may be relevant: restrictions on VoIP technology in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which could create a regulatory block for FaceTime.

Google Docs editing coming to iPad

This is pretty fantastic. Dave Girouard, president of Google Enterprise, announced via the Google official blog today that mobile editing for Google Docs is coming to the iPad and Android. Up until now, the Webkit browsers used on the mobile devices have been missing a key capability for handling rich text editing.

While you can access Google Docs through iPad office suites such as Documents to Go and Quickoffice, native access through Google will eliminate the need to purchase a 3rd party app and may make an iPad sound more appealing to those who want to use it to edit documents. It may prompt...

Hang with the 2010 Mac mini racks from Macessity

The new Mac minis are sleek and lovely, but there are times when you simply want to get them out of the way. For example, if you're running a mini server farm, you'd like to get many minis into a small space. How do you do that? A rack mount. What if you'd like to mount a mini under a desk, but still want to have easy access to the ports on the back?

Macessity has announced the answer to these storage questions with a new line of products for the 2010 Mac minis. The MX4-V2 is a rack tray (above) that holds up to four Mac minis so you can "rack 'em and stack 'em" in any standard equipment rack. The $79.99 tray has special holes for cable management and comes with the necessary mounting screws (don't laugh -- you can never find mounting hardware when you need it).

Regarding Ashok Kumar’s Track Record on Apple

Om Malik, in a piece headlined “Is Apple Working on a 7-Inch Screen iPad?”:

Apple, perhaps worried about competition from the Android camp,
may be looking to develop a new version of iPad, this one with a
7-inch screen. It would bring such a device to market some time in
2011, according to a research note put out by Rodman & Renshaw
analyst Ashok Kumar this morning. He writes that the second
generation iPad will have both front and rear facing cameras to
make it easier for video conferencing on the device, using
    Apple’s FaceTime.

So why a second generation iPad with different specifications
this quickly? I have a theory.

Will Apple make a 7-inch iPad? And if so, would it be the new size for the iPad, or a second size, alongside the existing just-under-10-inch size? I don’t know. But I do know that Ashok Kumar has...

    Apple releases Security Update 2010-006

This one apparently fixes an issue where a remote attacker could have snuck into AFP shared folders without having a password. Apple releases OS Security Updates a few times a year, and given how simple it is to update and install them, you should go ahead and update as soon as possible.

NimbleBit: Over half a million playing Pocket Frogs...

I've been playing NimbleBit's freemium Pocket Frogs game since it was released last week, and apparently I'm not the only one -- Ian Marsh tells TUAW that the game has been downloaded by half a million people so far. The company is also seeing 200K daily active users, and while Marsh couldn't share exact stats on how many people have taken advantage of the game's in-app purchases, he estimates that 3-4% of the active users have bought stamps or potions in the game.

Over on Twitter, he says that the 99 cent charges are the most common, making up half of the total purchases. But the $29.99 optional charges make up 8% of the purchases, and actually contribute to 49% of total revenue. In other words, just a few people are responsible for half of the game's total revenue -- the freemium model hard at work.

Just like that, the multi-format video playback app VLC has now made it to the App Store in the form of VLC Media Player for iPad. As Chris reported a couple of weeks ago, the much-beloved open source media tool has been ported and is now available for free download.

We're grabbing our copy right now and will soon be putting it through its versatile paces.

    Thanks Bart!

Dragon Dictate for Mac now available

That didn't take long. Earlier this year, Nuance Communications took over the MacSpeech product, with the intention of improving what was already a good application.

That has now been accomplished, and today Dragon Dictate is available for the Macintosh platform -- a reasonably priced upgrade for MacSpeech users.

The new version offers easier editing, the ability to switch between different microphones, and it uses a computer voice to proofread your dictated documents. The speech engine has been updated to new state-of-the-art technology.

It's nice to see speech recognition on the Mac that finally has feature parity with the PC versions. There are some nice new and unexpected features like saying 'search Google for Greek restaurants', and you can do a Spotlight search by voice.

Isaacs, a self-described "renowned college journalist, artist and social fixture" (also apparently North America's "most desirable hand model" at the age of 12, which is, if accurate, rather creepy), didn't get the replies she sought when she reached out to Apple's media relations team over and over for answers relating to a class assignment. Since her three iPad-related questions were apparently the key to her getting an A on her classwork, and she felt that she'd been ill-treated by the silence, she took her case to El Steve.

Pop musician Lily Allen to sue Apple

After singer Lily Allen's laptop was hacked into, she turned to Apple for help in identifying the attacker. When they refused, she decided to sue Apple into helping her, according to The Sun.

As The Next Web points out, the Sun's article is brief (to say the least) and the backstory -- was Allen's initial request for help refused by Apple? -- is dubious. It sounds to us like she's motivated to find the attacker, and the lawsuit is not necessarily designed to punish Apple. It seems there are 3rd-party companies that would gladly do what Allen's after, so we're not sure why she's suing Apple.

Also amusing is this profile of Allen and Future Cut that Apple itself put out not...

    A Facebook Phone?

An interesting story developed yesterday, starting with a Mike Arrington scoop for TechCrunch purporting that “Facebook Is Secretly Building a Phone”:

Facebook is building a mobile phone, says a source who has
knowledge of the project. Or rather, they’re building the
software for the phone and working with a third party to actually
build the hardware. Which is exactly what Apple and everyone else
    does, too.

(That’s actually not what Apple does. Apple does its own software and hardware engineering; it only farms out manufacturing. What Arrington is alleging is more along the lines of what Google did with the Nexus One — Google designed the software, HTC the hardware.)

Arrington says Facebook engineers Joe Hewitt and Matthew Papakipos are leading the project. Hewitt wrote the popular Facebook iPhone app....

HTC Android tablet may pack Tegra 2, 720p screen

HTC's rumored Android 3.0 tablet may aim for the high end of the space to claim an edge over Apple. The Digitimes contacts also gave it an unusually large 2GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in flash storage....

PlayStation Move teardown: not repairable, but...

The always-fascinating iFixit has turned its gaze, not to mention its screwdrivers, to the PlayStation Move, tearing apart the game controller. The verdict? With so many parts soldered down, there is little hope of repairing a broken unit, although the battery can easily be replaced. There is also a surprising amount of tech for the price.

"The Move contains many of components found in today's smartphones: a processor, accelerometer, gyroscope, Bluetooth transmitter, vibrating motor, and even a MEMS compass," Kyle Wiens wrote about the controller. "It's an amazing amount of tech for the money, even though we still think it's steep to pay $50 for a controller. Compared to a $40 WiiMote, though, it's quite the bang for the buck."

Analyst: Verizon iPhone won't hurt AT&T as...

AT&T was raised to “outperform” at Credit Suisse Group AG, which said Verizon's anticipated introduction of the iPhone in the first quarter won’t hurt AT&T’s business as much as investors fear, reports "Bloomberg" http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-09-20/at-t-raised-at-credit-suisse-gi...).
