Open URLs Quickly from BBEdit

If you're working on a bit of text (HTML or otherwise) in BBEdit, and you see a URL that you'd like to open, the fastest way is to Command-click it. Most BBEdit users probably already know this tip, but if you don't, it's a huge time-saver. (The same trick works in BBEdit's free little brother, TextWrangler.)

HP/Epson Printer Drivers 2.4.1/2.4 for Mac OS X 10.6

Apple has released several updates to its printer drivers for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The updates include the latest drivers for printers from HP (version 2.4.1) and Epson (version 2.4). More information on installing printer software updates, including a list of supported printers, is available on Apple's Web site. (Free, 387.47/737.48 MB)

Will these updates be installed automagically via Software Update, or must users manually download and install the software? Seems to me that SU should be smart enough to know that I already have HP software installed, and thus download the HP update.

Unfortunately, you'll need to download them manually.

On a happy note, this update finally fixed a small issue I was having with my P1006 (where photos would print as if somehow magically down-sampled to 32 or 24 colors). Huzzah.

Honestly, I'm not sure. Pedro implies that he didn't get the HP drivers automatically, but the Epson drivers just showed up in Software Update for me (well after they were on Apple's Support Downloads Web site).

Yep - I found the same thing as Adam. Several days later, the HP update was listed by Software Update.

They should show up in SU. But just because things do, that doesn't mean you should automatically install them. Unless you know they fix a problem you have, what's the rush? ;-) Consider yourself lucky that you have never installed an update that caused problems. I usually wait at least a week before installing anything via SU.

For simpler, third-party apps, I just make an archive of the current app and any prefs (although that file seldom changes) BEFORE installing the update. If things "go south" all I have to do is delete the new file and un-archive the old on. It's usually much, much more difficult to to use this method for SU stuff, files could be being updated all over the OS... ;-)
