Compare More Easily in Apple Mail

In Apple Mail, if you need to work back and forth between two different views of Mail's mailbox contents, you can do so quite easily. For example, you might want to look at a mailbox holding all filtered-in sales orders from the past week while also looking at a smart mailbox showing unanswered customer questions.

To avoid constantly clicking between mailbox views and losing your context each time, choose File > New Viewer window to get a second window and then arrange each window as desired.

Mac OS X 10.6.3 Combo Update 1.1

Apple has updated the combo updater for Mac OS X 10.6.3 (for details on that update, see "Mac OS X 10.6.3 Update Delivers Range of Fixes," 29 March 2010). Although Apple provided no details on what was changed, the only users who need to consider installing it are those who updated from Mac OS X 10.6.0 using the 1.0 version of the Mac OS X 10.6.3 Update, build 10D573 (in other words, someone reinstalling Snow Leopard from scratch and then updating to 10.6.3 in one step). Apple has also released the tiny (635 KB) Mac OS X 10.6.3 Supplemental Update 1.0 solely via Software Update for these users. The combo updater is available via the Apple Support Downloads page, and will be presented by Software Update to those reinstalling Snow Leopard from scratch. (Free, 785.29 MB)

The problem here is that revised combo updater is NOT available through Software Update if you've already updated to 10.6.3 (though the previously available 10.6.3 combo, or in any away at all? not sure). So users are (1) not sure what to do (should I download this new 10.6.3 combo and install it over my existing 10.6.3 installation?), and (2) unlikely to learn that this revised combo even exists. Apple, as usual, provides no information.

There's a Mac OS X 10.6.3 Supplemental Update that Software Update provides (it's not available for separate download) if you've already updated to 10.6.3 using the 1.0 version of this combo updater. Tonya got that on her MacBook, because drive errors forced us to reformat and reinstall just after 10.6.3 came out.

Well should one - or not? That is the Q. I updated with 10.6.3 Combo when it first appeared. Perhaps the Q should now be: would it do any harm to install this new updated Combo over the top of the old? Any thoughts please?

I believe that if you installed the 10.6.3 Combo Update over 10.6.0 (not over a later version) AND your build number is 10D573, you should be given that Supplemental Update automatically via Software Update (that's what happened on Tonya's MacBook). In any other situation, there's no need to worry, in my mind.

So this doesn't address the random "Finder freezing" that some who have used the earlier 10.6.3 Delta and/or Combo updater are reporting?
