Mysteriously Moving Margins in Word

In Microsoft Word 2008 (and older versions), if you put your cursor in a paragraph and then move a tab or indent marker in the ruler, the change applies to just that paragraph. If your markers are closely spaced, you may have trouble grabbing the right one, and inadvertently work with tabs when you want to work with indents, or vice-versa. The solution is to hover your mouse over the marker until a yellow tooltip confirms which element you're about to drag.

I recently came to appreciate the importance of waiting for those tooltips: a document mysteriously reset its margins several times while I was under deadline pressure, causing a variety of problems. After several hours of puzzlement, I had my "doh!" moment: I had been dragging a margin marker when I thought I was dragging an indent marker.

When it comes to moving markers in the Word ruler, the moral of the story is always to hover, read, and only then drag.

2009 Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0

Apple has released a firmware update for the 2009 Aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard that improves battery performance when using them in conjunction with other Bluetooth devices such as the Magic Mouse or some Bluetooth headsets. Apple notes that your keyboard must be connected or paired to be able to perform the update. More information regarding installation instructions is available on Apple's Web site. Firmware Update could not find keyboard.
Attempted to install this update on a brand new aluminium wireless keyboard that came with a brand new 21.5-inch iMac. Keyboard was 'stuttering' by repeating random characters without being touched. Firmware version in System Profiler indicated keyboard update was necessary. Bluetooth in System Prefs shows Keyboard is paired, but Firmware Update reports no keyboard. Tried another brand new aluminium keyboard from a recently purchased 27-inch iMac, same result. (Yes, I am in Sydney, Australia, where we spell it aluminIUM).

It was also supposed to prevent unintentional double-keying (typing "ii" instead of "i"), which had been a minor problem for me and which I'd thought was my own wacky fingers. Since the update, the double-keying has been far worse.

I just installed this update and now my symbol keys are all messed up...for example I can't find the "at" key (above the 2), and have had to find all of the symbols you see in this post...they're no longer where they should be! Anyone know how to roll this back? Don:t say Time Machine...I don:t have it set up yet.
