Sport Fishing

Maine offers the angler many challenging environments and species to fish for. One of the more popular states for freshwater fishing for trout, bass and landlocked salmon, it also has hundreds of miles of tidal bays, inlets and river mouths that hold strong populations of striped bass and a fair amount of sea run brook trout and restored Atlantic salmon migrations. Maine's many ports and harbors play host to charter boats, which provide sporting opportunities for deep-sea fishing for a variety of ocean species.

Licenses are issued by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Information regarding license requirements, creel limits and seasons can be found in the Maine Open Water Fishing Regulations printed by the Department and can be obtained by calling (207) 287-2766.

Hunting

Maine's 32,562 square miles continue to be sparsely populated outside of the urban areas, with millions of acres of forests, swamps, ponds, lakes and bogs. This rich environment is home to native species of moose, white-tailed deer, and black bear. It is also home to wild turkey, ruffed grouse, spruce grouse, woodcock and several species of sea ducks, puddle ducks and geese.
