General InformationA northeastern seaboard state, Connecticut covers some 4,827 square miles of diverse terrain and over 200 miles of Atlantic coastline. Rich in maritime history and tradition, Connecticut's location along Long Island Sound has made it a favorite among seaworthy travelers and vacationers seeking refuge from the metropolitan areas of New York and Boston. Capital City: Hartford Largest City: Bridgeport Sport fishingAlthough highly urbanized and heavily populated, Connecticut has native natural resources that offer some of the best sport fishing in New England. Three hundred trout streams, 160 lakes and ponds, and the 250-mile coastline of Long Island Sound are available to the angler in pursuit of a wide variety of both freshwater and saltwater game fish. Connecticut's trout and bass angling rivals that of the other New England states, and Long Island Sound has become a popular inshore fishery for striped bass, bluefish, and bonito. Further offshore, bluefin tuna migrate north in the summer months. Connecticut's rivers also offer runs of shad in early spring--a formidable substitute for the Atlantic salmon runs of old, which are on the comeback in some areas thanks to conservation efforts.
