DELAWARE

General Information

Delaware, the Diamond State, is the second-smallest state in the Union with 1,955 square miles, but still has excellent hunting and angling opportunities. The state is only 96 miles long, and ranges in width from nine to 35 miles. The terrain slopes from rolling hills in the north to near sea-level plain in the south. Located on the Delmarva Peninsula, the state offers both freshwater and saltwater fishing and is part of the migratory fly way, making for excellent waterfowling.

Capital City: Dover

Largest City: Wilmington

Sport Fishing

Inland fishing opportunities are relatively modest, but combined with saltwater possibilities, Delaware has a little something for everyone. Fifty freshwater ponds support species such as largemouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow and white perch, and sunfish.

The Rehoboth and Indian river bays open to the ocean, offering flounder, croaker, and white perch in abundance. The Delaware River and Delaware Bay have plenty of croaker, weakfish, and porgies. Ocean fishing out of Lewes is excellent for black sea bass, bluefish, marlin, and tuna.

Hunting

Delaware is situated on the Delmarva Peninsula between the Delaware and Chesapeake bays. The Upper Chesapeake was once the canvasback capital of the east, and is still part of the fly way, and host to many species of birds. There is a migratory Canada goose season, as well as regular seasons for waterfowl and game birds.

Delaware also has excellent deer and wild turkey hunting, and no permit is required for hunting in state wildlife areas. Delaware has quite a bit of sporting diversity, with game animals from quail, rabbit, and pheasant to species such as snapping turtles and bullfrogs.
