Single Time Machine Backups

Tired of Time Machine running all the time? You can turn it off in the Time Machine preference pane, but still initiate a single backup by choosing Back Up Now from Time Machine's menu bar icon. Of course, your backup is much less likely to be up to date, but Time Machine won't be taking any resources while you're trying to work.

View the U.S. Inauguration on an iPhone or iPod touch

Ustream's Viewing Application iPhone app has been approved by Apple just in time for users to install it on an iPhone or an iPod touch. The app lets you view live streams of video generally, and the inauguration or Barack Obama specifically, over a Wi-Fi connection. Once I opened the app on my iPod touch, I found that I could switch among Top Live, Featured, and All Live selections, with each showing a list of live streams and a count of how many people are watching. Within each video, users can also click a Share button to email info about the stream to a friend, and some of the streams offer a chat option. You can download the app from the App Store for free.
