Apple accused of discrimination against lefties
Apple has been accused of ''discrimination'' over the design of their iPhone 4 and that left handers find it more difficult to use, reports the UK "Telegraph" (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/7855205/Apple-accused-of-dis...). There have been complaints an antenna in the lower left corner can become masked when held by a left-handed owner, causing a drop in signal strength. Apple's advice is, basically, "don't hold it that way." Lauren Milsom, of the UKs' Left-Handed Club, which boasts 90,000 members and represents 10% of the population who are left-handed, branded it a ''design flaw," according to the "Telegraph." "'It seems ludicrous to suggest that 10% of potential users should be told they have to adopt a less natural hand hold to use this latest technology," Milson adds. "I would strongly suggest that Steve Jobs employs left-handers in his design and testing team in future, and urgently address this issue to ensure the phone is fit for purpose."

Don't hold your iPhone 4 THAT way
There are reports that the iPhone 4 doesn't want to connect very quickly -- if at all -- when held a certain way. And a "PC World" report (http://www.pcworld.com/article/199848/iphoneflaw.html?tk=rss_news) confirms this. Though saying that, overall, the new smartphone is faster than its predecessors they had this to say: "At each of my five testing locations I did an extra set of speed tests while holding the iPhone 4 with my left hand, covering up the bottom left edge of the phone. At one testing location, this seemed to make no difference: I got equal connection speeds when I held the phone in my left hand and when I tested with it sitting on the tabletop. But in the remaining four locations, I saw dramatic speed decreases. In three of my testing locations, connection speeds dropped to zero or near zero when I held the phone against my left palm. The number of connection bars showing dropped from five out of five to just one or two out of five. I also noticed that the latency...

Analyst: 77% of iPhone 4 sales were upgrades
In a note to clients, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says that 77% of iPhone sales were upgrades and that Apple has built a recurring revenue stream from a growing base of loyal users. "While we think Apple will sell between 1.0 million to 1.5 million iPhones in the first three days (including pre-orders), the actual number is largely irrelevant," he writes. "Apple is tapping into the global consumer spending sweet spot, mobile, and as a result iPhone numbers are going higher in the coming years." As reported by "Fortune" (http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/06/25/77-of-iphone-4-sales-were-upgrades/), Munster and his team's survey also shows that: ° Seventy-seven percent pf the iPhone 4 buyers they spoke to were upgrading from a previous version. That's up from 56% in 2009 and 38% in 2008. ° Sixteen percent of buyers were switching carriers to AT&T, down from 28% last year. ° Fifty-four purchased the higher-capacity 32GB model, up from 43% last year. ° Twenty-eight percent...

Last month AT&T said it would eliminate the unlimited data plan for new iPad 3G customers and replace it with data plans offering either 250MB or 2GB per month. Current customers already under the unlimited data plan could keep it. However, if they  decide to skip a month of data they...

International expansion of the iPhone to be big for Apple
International expansion of the iPhone is the single most important driver of Apple stock in 2010, with overseas sales predicted to account for 80% of all of the company's handset sales by the end of 2010, according to one analyst -- and as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) Brian Marshall with Gleacher & Company told clients that he's increased his 2010 iPad sales estimates to 12 million in calendar year 2010, and 20 million in 2011. More impressive yet, the analyst said that the iPhone is still in the "driver's seat" for Apple. Marshall says Apple's international carrier partners offer a postpaid subscriber base more than six times larger than AT&T, the exclusive wireless carrier of the iPhone in the U.S. Despite that, international sales in calendar year 2009 represented only 60% of total units sold, so there's nowhere to go but up, up, up.

Apple expands lawsuit against HTC
Apple has expanded its lawsuit against HTC. In a complaint filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, Apple accuses HTC of infringing two additional patents and re-asserts its allegations of infringement of two others, reports "All Things Digital" (http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100623/apple-sues-htc-over-two-more...). Apple filed in March against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. comScore (http://www.comscore.com), a company that "measures the digital world," has outlined the impact the first three generations of Apple’s iPhone have had on the European mobile market, in light of record pre-sales and extraordinary consumer demand for the iPhone 4, which launches today. And reports say that crowds have lined up globally to get their hands on one. In fact, over 1,000 people, many queuing through the night, besieged a store in downtown Tokyo on Friday as the iPhone went on sale in Japan for the first time. The iPhone 3G went on sale at 7:00 a.m. at the flagship store of Softbank Mobile in downtown Tokyo. More than 500 people queued outside Apple's store in the Ginza district. The iPhone currently represents just 4% of the EU5 (U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Italy) mobile market, but 18% of the overall EU5 smartphone market. MoneyWorks releases free MYOB file converter
The maker of MoneyWorks, Cognito Software, has released a free utility (http://www.cognito.co.nz/myobgone.php) that solves the problem MYOB users experience when they want to change their accounting software, then struggle to extract the necessary financial data. It's common for organizations to have outgrown their accounting package, but have concerns about the difficulty of moving to a new solution and the accuracy of the data that is transferred. This can form an impasse that traps users in an uncomfortable situation, where they're restricted by a system that no longer meets their needs and provides inadequate management information. For MYOB users, exporting complete data is very difficult. For example, when they try to export their products/items list no stock on-hand information is included. Previously, the only way to for MYOB users to change systems was by running reports and manually re-entering the information. Cognito has solved this problem. The free file converter will...

'iFixIt' tears down the iPhone 4
The gang at "iFixIt' have torn down the iPhone 4. They say Apple definitely spent time giving the phone a thorough makeover, meticulously changing every little facet. You can find the complete teardown at http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone-4-Teardown/3130/1 . However, here are some of the highlights: ° Like the iPhone 3G and 3GS, there are two silver Phillips screws at the bottom of the phone. But removing these screws releases the rear case instead of the front glass, giving you immediate access to the battery. ° Unfortunately, the LCD panel is very securely glued to the glass and digitizer. If you break the glass, you'll have to replace the glass, digitizer, and LCD as a single assembly. ° The 3.7V, 1420 mAh Li-Polymer battery is not soldered in place, and very easy to remove. ° The iPhone 4 sports two cameras -- a 1.3 MP front-facer, and a 5 MP beauty on the back. Both are located on their own independent boards, making it possible to physically remove the cameras without...

More than 55 million smartphones ship in first quarter of 2010
The world’s smartphone markets continued to build on their strong 4Q-2009 performance in the first three months of 2010. According to the latest ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) data, a little more than 55 million smartphones shipped during the quarter. In fact that represents a drop of about one million compared to the fourth quarter of 2009, but seasonal sales cycles always produce lower results in the first quarter of any year compared to the previous quarter; according to senior analyst Michael Morgan, “Normally we would see a much greater decline in shipments in the first quarter," he says. "The fact that the drop was so relatively small highlights the continuing dynamic growth of the smartphone market." Much of the fastest growth is being seen in markets previously little penetrated by expensive, cutting-edge smartphones, according to ABI Research. With new less expensive models becoming available, the global market is becoming much more diverse. An example is provided...

Do e-Readers have a chance against the iPad?
By Andrew Eisner (Eisner is director of Community and Content for Retrevo.com, a site that does research on electronic shopping). Amazon claims they sell more Kindles on their site than any other product but just to cover the bases they also offer a very popular iPhone and iPad app. Barnes and Noble also offers an app. As the iPad continues to build momentum as a multi-purpose media player and e-Reader, consumers also have more and more e-Readers to choose from. This Retrevo Pulse study looks at e-Readers and iPads: who's planning to buy one and what could help sell more of them. Although an overwhelming majority of respondents (64%) said they have no plans to buy an e-Reader, we were surprised to see almost 20% say they were planning to buy an e-Reader, and that doesn't include iPads. Although, it appears consumers still want Kindles and other e-Readers, it looks like the iPad could grab a substantial share of the market. The study revealed almost one-third (8% of 28%) of the people...

Study: iPhone 3GS 20% more reliable than 3G
SquareTrade, an independent warranty provider, has completed their second annual study on failure rates for Apple iPhones. Based on data compiled from over 25,000 3G and 3GS iPhones covered by SquareTrade since 2008, the study found that 25.6% of the devices experienced a failure in the first two years, compared to 33% in 2009.     The improvement in iPhone reliability was driven largely by the 3GS model’s substantially fewer touchscreen failures than the 3G. Of the total failures, 18% encountered damage due to accidents and another 7.5% were hardware malfunctions. When the data is projected out three years, up to 40 percent of 3GS iPhones are expected to experience some type of failure.   Other findings from the iPhone study:   ° The two-year malfunction rate (non-accident) decreased from 10% in June 2009 to 7.5 %. ° The two-year accidental damage rate decreased from 21% in June 2009 to 18%. ° More than two-thirds of accidental damage was due to dropping the device, most resulting...

Apple adds antivirus signatures to Mac OS X 10.6.4
In its Mac OS X 10.6.4 ("Snow Leopard") upgrade Apple included new antivirus signatures to help fight off some of the more "high profile OS X exploits found in the wild, reports "Maximum PC" (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/apple_sneaks_antivirus_signatures_osx?). The most notable of these is a file disguised as the iPhoto application which, when launched, lets attackers send spam, take screenshots, access files, and more. "Our guess is that the Apple marketing department couldn't find a positive light to spin the new OS enhancement, so it was conveniently left out of the patch notes," "Maximum PC" says. "Cnet pointed out, and we agree, that Apple's ongoing refusal to acknowledge security flaws in its products exposes users to greater danger since they are lulled into a false sense of security." The Sophos security company claims that Apple added the antivirus signatures "on the sly," reports "TechEye" (http://www.techeye.net/security/apple-secretly-updates-anti-malware-for...
