A new mobile application, which allows those who are hard of hearing to make video calls through the iPod Touch has been released. ZVRS uses the video camera found in the latest iPod Touch models to establish a video link between deaf and hearing callers. The feed is sent through a video relay service (VRS), which places an interpreter in the middle of the call who translates back and forth between the two participants. ZVRS has been built around Apple's FaceTime software and was designed to extend FaceTimes capabilities beyond enabling communication between two peop...

Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me find iPhone simulation games

Dear Aunt TUAW,

Finding games (or any app) for iPhone, or iOS in general, is a series of hit and misses. Let me be frank. It's mostly misses. I was wondering if you knew of any good Empire Building or (preferably) Company building games out there.

Any help would be most appreciative.

Thanks,

Your nephew Mike E.

A glimpse into the future by Mozilla concept phone

Watch out for the hottest concept mobile in town and the news is its not by Apple, Google, Motorola or even HTC. It was developed by a designer in his spare time as part of a Mozilla Labs project. Seabird is designer Billy Mays vision for a phone that aims to address some of the frustrations people have when interacting with small devices.
Seabird has two pico projectors. When placed in a dock it uses one of them to project the screen on a nearby wall for easier viewing and the other to project a full-size, virtual keyboard on the table where it sits. A user can then type on the virtual keyboard instead of a tiny on-screen or physical keyboard on the phone.
The dual pico projectors, located on the sides of the phone, could also be used without the dock to project half a keyboard each one on each side of the phone. The Seabird, on just a flat surface, enables netbook-quality interaction by working with the projectors angular distortion to deliver interface, rather than...

Apple TV Orders Delayed Up to 3 Weeks [Apple]

Just because you ordered expedited shipping on that Apple TV doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get it on time. Apparently several customers have gotten emails from the company indicating a 2-3 week delay, and offering a refund for the shipping charge. According to Apple Insider:

"Our records indicate that when you placed your order you paid for upgraded shipping," Apple wrote in the emails. "Due to a delay, we may have not been able to meet our delivery commitment."

It's not exactly a white iPhone 4 situation, but it's another in a series of delayed product launches from Cupertino. Although in this case, that probably just means demand has exceeded expectations. [/"...

10.6: Set the View type for a Disk Image

In Snow Leopard newly created Disk Images, both unencrypted and encrypted, will default to the use of Icon View for display. Changing the View type to List, Cover Flow, or Column View and then closing the window and reopening the window causes the view to revert to Icon View. Ejecting and remounting the image will also lose any changes and revert to Icon View.

Deleting the .DS_Store file on the mounted image does not help, and there is nothing in com.apple.finder.plist that seems to affect this. This is quite vexing, and appears to be present in all revisions of Snow Leopard, at least through 10.6.4.

Fortunately, there is a workaround.
Here is the process:

  • Mount the Disk Image and select it. It will open in Icon View.
  • Do a Cmd+J to display the View Options for the disk image.
  • Check the 'Always open ...

Mac 101: Preparing your old Mac for sale or recycling

It happens to all of us eventually (except for the Mac collectors). At some point, we decide that it's time to take that old Mac that we've just replaced and try to get a few bucks out of it. Some of us donate our machines to schools or other worthwhile organizations, and if we have really old equipment, we may just recycle it. In any case, there are some things you'll want to do to prepare the Mac for sale or recycling.

Step One: Make sure everything is backed up
There's nothing worse than nuking the hard drive on a computer and then realizing that you've just destroyed irreplaceable photos, documents, or recordings. Even if you're using Time Machine to back up your Mac onto an external hard disk drive, I recommend going through your important directories -- Applications, Documents, Downloads, Photos, Music, and...

Verizon CEO expresses doubts about iPhone deal

It’s sort of a love story.

Apple may go with Verizon. They may not. They may be building a CDMA phone designed for Verizon’s networks. And then the Capulet and Montague families sit down together over tasty food and beverages while discussing the current season of “Mad Men”.

Per the Wall Street Journal, Verizon’s CEO didn’t sound hopeful about that happening in the near term in a speech today, according to news stories.

Verizon’s Ivan Seidenberg addressed an investor conference and in response to when his network would offer the iPhone, he said, “We would love to carry it, but we have to earn it.”
He also said that as Verizon rolls out its 4G LTE network over the next year that Apple...

Rumor: Apple prepping smaller, lighter MacBook Air

Things may be about to change for Apple’s MacBook Air, the super-slim notebook perhaps receiving an LED-backlit display nearly two inches smaller than the current model.

Per DigiTimes, Apple has watched sales of its ultra-portable trickle off to levels believed to be immaterial to its bottom line. As such, the product line has received little attention from the company, undergoing just two minor revisions in a 29-month span — the latter of which took place well over a year ago.

At just 0.76″ at its thickest point, the MacBook Air is undoubtedly slim enough for its target audience of business travelers and those consistently on the go. However, sales of the device suggest that its 13.3″ footprint and 3 pound carrying weight may be a bit more than that class of customers would prefer, especially given the resounding success of Apple’s more compact and lighter 9.7″ iPad.

In an effort to make the...

TUAW's Daily App: Awesome Solitaire

Awesome Solitaire is (surprise!) an awesome solitaire game. The usual card game is so simple by now that presentation is everything, and Awesome Solitaire has presentation in spades. If you play in Awesome mode, the graphics are flashy, you get rewarded with points for combos, and the animation looks smooth and professional. Heck, the background is even animated with the accelerometer. My one argument is that there's no sound on the app at all -- as flashy and smooth as the graphics are, you'd think there would be some sparkling sounds to accompany them. But then again, I often turn the sounds on my phone down (especially in public), so the lack of sound on a pick up and play game like this doesn't hurt too much.

This is the absolute coolest version of solitaire you will ever play on your iPhone. There aren't a lot of actual game options (there are...

Booq's Cobra Laptop and iPad Bags For Today...

Keeping with the snake theme, Booq's new Cobra range of four gadget-friendly bags are (mostly) affordable, but actually look really nice. My favorite is the Courier XS satchel—large enough for an iPad and the rest of your junk.

The Courier XS is $145, but if you're in need of something larger, there's the Cobra Slim L, a slim briefcase for $155. It can store laptops up to 17-inches in size, plus an iPad in the second non-scratch compartment.

Next up in size and cost is the Cobra Brief L, a medium-sized briefcase for laptops up to 17-inches. There's a few more pockets and compartments here, justifying the $255 price.

Heavy packers who need to cart around heaps of files, gadgets and their requisite chargers should check out the Cobra Case L, which is more expensive at $345 (bit too much, if you ask me), but it could probably double as an overnight bag. A...

Current iPods use a standard cantilever design. A cantilever is a metallic beam that is folded inside the case, providing a contact with the metal stereo plug. When you put the plug inside the jack, the beams bend, but present enough resistance to make a good contact with the plug's surface. However, to have enough resistance, they need to have an adequate size, which is too big for Apple at this point.

The new patent employs Pogo pins, which have been used for a long time in electronics to provide...

Data in the Cloud Still Governed by Obsolete Privacy...

The Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) was enacted in 1986 to protect user data from government oversight and significant portions haven't been updated since.

That's a problem, advocates say, because the law is now completely outdated. The law currently gives more protection to data you store locally and less to data kept in the cloud - an obvious problem in the age of Gmail, Facebook and Amazon Web Services.

Cloud computing haunted by privacy concerns

Technology companies and privacy advocates have been calling for Congress to update the legislation for years (see Coalition of Tech Companies Wants to Give You Digital Due Process). The law leaves consumers unprotected, they argue, and dampens the cloud computing sector's economic prospects.

As the law stands, providers can do little to assure users that their data will remain protected if someone in law enforcement or government wants to look at it. In many cases, law enforcement...

Advanced Camera System Revealed in Apple Patent...

Apple's latest patent application details a new camera flash system that would optimize the flash based on the photo's subject. It combines a flash redirector, imaging sensors that concentrate on scene conditions, and a touch screen.

This combination of these elements could be used to provide the equivalent of a touch-to-focus for light for dark areas of a soon-to-be photograph: a touch-to-illuminate feature. The system could be incorporated into iOS devices, the iMac, MacBooks, and even a dedicated video camera. [...

How To: Add contact information to your Mac's...

If you believe in the kindness of strangers, this tip might be for you. Most laptop users fear that their computer will be lost or stolen. Assuming that the right sort of person finds your laptop, however, they might be willing to return it to its rightful owner, if they knew how to contact you.

It is possible to add a short message to the login screen of your Mac. The easiest way to do that is by using Onyx; click on the Parameters tab, and then type your message into the area shown above. I suggest including your name, phone number, and whatever else you think increases your chances of getting it back.

This won't help if a thief has ripped off your MacBook while you weren't looking, but it just might help if you accidentally leave it in a cab and someone trustworthy gets in next. Hey, it could happen!

    Note that...

Microsoft takes PC vs. Mac trolling to Facebook

Microsoft has launched a PC versus Mac campaign on Facebook, via its Windows Australia account. The page is under its own "PC or MAC" tab, where users can try to pick who the PC user is based on uploaded pictures, and then share their results with their Facebook friends.

There's even an option to upload your own photo and fill out a "PC or Mac personality survey" for others to guess "where your allegiances lie." In addition to the usual questions, the survey asks what you associate with (cocktails or beer, safety or risks, folder or "scruncher," texting or calling, dj or bands, voyeur or performer) as well as five yes or no "have you ever" questions (borrowed someone else's ID, forgotten mother's day, "wagged" school, gone skinny dipping, or snuck into a cinema without paying). Some of the answers are used on the main page when your picture is paired with another's so that users can pick who the PC user is, while the rest live in your profile.

Flickr Find: iPad powering bike stereo

This is pretty cool -- it's a bike-mounted iPad-controlled stereo spotted at a recent meetup for a group of BMX riders. There's not a lot of information on how it was all put together (maybe if user Mikey Wally sees this, he can tell us more in the comments below), but it looks like the iPad is secured with a handlebars mount, and then it's plugged into a speaker that's stuck on the front. Assuming it is secure (and I hope it is, otherwise you're going to have a very broken iPad), it seems like a pretty wild way to make your music mobile. As we've discussed before, having an iPad on a bike can be handy in certain situations.

I think it'd be cool to...

    Garry's Mod out for Mac

Valve has released another Steam Play Mac title, and this time it's Garry's Mod, the wild sandbox physics editor that uses assets from Half Life 2 to create whatever you want. The mod is probably most famous for its Rube Goldberg-style creations, but it's also very handy for machinima and other graphic model design as well. It's not so much a game as a way to just create all kinds of wacky machines and computer characters, and have them interact in whatever way you'd like.

If you already own it for the PC, then you own the Mac version as well, so you can head into Steam on OS X and download away. If you don't own it yet, Steam has a 50% off discount up right now, so you can pick it up for just $4.99.

And no, because I'm sure you're wondering, there's still no Left 4 Dead....

That's Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg speaking honestly on his company's chances at carrying the iPhone anytime soon. From that statement alone, you can probably conclude that while there may have been talks between Verizon and Apple about carrying the iPhone, it's not going to happen anytime soon, including by January (which is when the latest rumor puts the mythical announcement).

E-Books Are Only 6% of Printed Book Sales

An anonymous reader writes "MIT's technology blog argues that e-book sales represent 'only six pecent of the total market for new books.' It cites a business analysis which calculates that by mid-July, Amazon had sold 15.6 million hardcover books versus 22 million e-books, but with sales of about 48 million more paperback books. Amazon recently announced they sell 180 e-books for every 100 hardcover books, but when paperbacks are counted, e-books represent just 29.3% of all Amazon's book sales. And while Amazon holds about 19% of the book market, they currently represent 90% of all e-book sales — suggesting that e-books represent a tiny fraction of all print books sold. 'Many tech pundit wants books to die,' argues MIT's Christopher Mims, citing the head of Microsoft's ClearType team, who says 'I'd be glad to ditch thousands of paper- and hard-backed books from my bookshelves. I'd rather have them all on an iPad.' But while Nicholas Negroponte predicts the death of the book within...

New York, New Jersey transit pilot iPhone payment...

MTA New York City Transit, New Jersey Transit and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have collaborated with Visa to create a payment system that uses Visa's PayWave technology and several popular smartphones, including the iPhone. Travelers trying out the service can pay for passage onto the trains by simply waving a properly-equipped iPhone over a special sensor at the turnstiles.

Here's how it works. First, iPhones equipped with PayWave and special sensors (don't ask us how you get one) are activated, which let the users know when it's ready to use. Then, it's held before the sensor and presto! You're in.

    Currently, the pilot program is...

Apple patent application reveals tiny audio jacks

Apple's developers have been shrinking the iPod with nearly every update, yet they aren't done. This week, AppleInsider has discovered a patent application that reveals even smaller audio jacks that could be used in future, tinier iPods. To understand how, we must discuss pogo pins and cantilever beams.

Contemporary audio jacks use cantilever beams, which extend into the cavity of the jack itself, and are pushed out of the way when a plug is inserted. The beams then make contact with the plug and allow data, audio, and power to be transferred. They also take up a decent amount of space; too much in Apple's opinion.

The patent mentions pogo pins, which are embedded into the cavity and extend to make contact with an inserted plug. Furthermore, the patent claims that pogo pins would "greatly reduce" the size...

iPads On American Campuses? Maybe Next Year

Velcroman1 writes "Slashdotters have read extensively about the iPad pilot programs at colleges and universities: Australian schools are iPad crazy, we read yesterday, and thanks to the iPad's success, 2011 will be the year of the tablet. But on US college campuses almost half a year after the iPad's launch, it's a whole different story — at least so far this year. FoxNews.com reports that high-profile schools like Duke and Stanford are far more cautious about the device than has previously been reported. 'It definitely facilitates studying and recall because you don't get bogged down by all the paper,' noted first-year Stanford med student Ryan Flynn. But it's still a work in progress. 'The iPad isn't the best input device. Some people have gone back to paper and pencil.'"

Walt Mossberg, personal technology journalist for the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital, posted a column yesterday about using an iPad on a "working vacation" to Paris.

Mossberg decided to forgo his usual laptop on a 10-day trip to Paris, relying instead on his iPad, a smartphone, and a small digital camera. He found the experiment to be a "pleasant success," noting that he had to carry much less weight, got better battery life, and had an instant-on computer. In the meantime, Mossberg stated that he was able to pretty much do everything he'd be able to do with a laptop -- with a few exceptions.

While he admits that he would be able to write long documents on the iPad without an accessory keyboard, Mossberg is waiting for the multi-...

Diggs traffic is collapsing at home and abroad

Following the controversial launch of Diggs new version 4 the public question became just this: would the uproar from the community lead to a massive decline in total visits to the social companys website?
The answer is yes. According to new data revealed by Hitwise Digg is shedding traffic both in the US and the UK at shocking rates. Recall that the new Digg launched this past August 25th and take a look at these charts:

The only word that I can summon is ouch. If you place your cursor between the demarcation lines of the 21st and 28th of August (where the launch date, the 25th, lands) and then glance at the following trends it is an almost shocking descent.
According to Hitwise calculations, from the end of August to now traffic from UK Internet users to digg has declined by 34%. In the US, which is diggs primary market, visits have dropped by 26%. That does not factor in immediate losses between the 25th of August and the 31st of that month.
    In short,...

Mac 101: Use the keyboard to navigate a Grid from...

When I first got my Mac, it came with all the standard applications found in the applications folder. I used to find that opening an application from the applications Grid, on the Dock, was much easier and quicker than opening an application through the Finder.

Over time, with more applications being installed on my computer, my applications Grid became larger and larger. Instead of seeing a small bunch of icons that I could easily recognize and navigate, I literally had dozens of icons on my applications Grid. This made it very difficult to distinguish the one application that I was looking for. It was like looking at a sea of multi-colored icons that were all blurring into one. Maybe you know what I'm talking about?

Naturally, I had my most used applications accessible directly from the Dock, but for all of my other applications, I started using the Finder or Spotlight to locate and launch them instead. That is, until a friend showed me an obvious way to navigate a...
