Digg Has Jumped The Shark
Over time I’ve built something of a reputation as a Digg fan, both within and outside of TNW. I have long enjoyed the community that managed the site and respected the team that built it.
That said, I find myself in something of a dull torpor whenever I visit the new Digg; its vitality has been stripped, and its soul seems to have been crushed. The wonky aspects of Digg that long gave it a unique character are being buried in spam and dull stories.
Digg has always been broken, but in an odd way it used to work. No, it was not the democratic heaven that some people wanted it to be, but it was a strong content destination. That is no longer the case.
Even more, from the publisher perspective, the promise of non-episodic traffic has turned out to be something of a paper dragon. Do we get a few more hits on a day to day basis than we used to? Maybe, but the decline of traffic to Digg’s front page means that the daily crumbs don’t make up the for the massively...

Time Warner fights 99 cent rentals, too
NBC isn't the only broadcast company that's fighting Apple on 99 cent iTunes rentals. Apparently Time Warner doesn't want in on the plan, either. That's according to its CEO Jeff Bewkes, who told a conference of media executives in London that Apple is underselling television content by providing cheap rentals to customers. "How can you justify renting your first-run TV shows individually for 99 cents an episode," he asked, "and thereby jeopardize the sale of the same shows as a series to branded networks that pay hundreds of millions of dollars and make those shows available to loyal viewers for free?" The argument seems to be that if Apple offers 99 cent rentals, there's no incentive for syndication on other networks. Why would you watch cable reruns when you could load up old shows...

YouTube options, iPad multitasking animation, Game...
9to5Mac has been digging through the brand new iOS 4.2 beta, and they've found a few new features hidden in the mix. First up, the build offers some new YouTube uploading options -- you can now choose to make your uploaded YouTube videos public, unlisted, or private upon upload. Honestly, I've had hit-or-miss luck with uploading to YouTube straight from my iPhone, but it's nice to know the process is being worked on. Maybe we'll have some optimization come along with the new options.
Second, as you can see above, the iPad has gotten itself a brand new multitasking animation. Instead of just pulling up whatever app you're switching to, it'll actually spin the windows around (this functionality is already up and running on the iPhone, but now it'll be available on the iPad as well). RIM VP of product platform management Alan Panezic defended BlackBerry App World's low 10,000 app count at DevCon by striking back at Apple and Google. Android and iPhone app counts were considered deceptive since they include a large amount of redundant and low value apps....

It must be 'iPad Remote Week' because hot on the heels of Apple releasing iTunes remote control for the iPad, Sonos has delivered a very nice, free iPad remote that is feature complete, and elegant in execution.
Previously, Sonos owners had to make do with the iPhone version of the app, which only ran in portrait mode and had to upscale to fill the iPad screen. That's all fixed now, with the delivery of the Sonos Controller for iPad. I gave it a run through last night, and it is a pleasure to use. iFixit: Apple TV has 8GB of onboard flash storage
One of the big questions concerning whether or not the new Apple TV will be able to run apps of some sort is "how much onboard RAM does it have?"
That question has been answered by the guys at iFixit, who as usual, have been the first to tear apart and document the internal workings of the Apple TV. The answer: 8GB of NAND flash RAM made by Samsung. The iFixit team speculates that the RAM is most likely going to be used to cache incoming video streams, but it might also be used to temporarily hold apps that could run under iOS on the device.
More interesting news about the Apple TV is bound to come out in the next couple of days; stay tuned to TUAW for all of your Apple TV coverage.
Correction to original post: that's 8GB of onboard flash storage, 256MB of actual RAM. We apologize for the error.

Queuing and downloading in the App Store
Here's a great idea from Ryan Cash to put iOS apps unavailable for immediate download into a queue that will automatically resume when they become available.
Ryan notes that he often buys iOS apps when he's out and about, whether it be on the recommendation of a friend, riding in a car, etc. The problem is that many of the target apps are over the 20MB 3G limit. I've experienced this myself, as well as the inevitable conclusion: I forget to try again once I'm within range of a Wi-Fi network, and the app's author has lost that sale.
Ryan suggests an "add to queue" option to accompany or follow the notification at right, which would put that download into a holding pattern until the iPhone found a Wi-Fi network. That way, the download would resume, we'd get that cool app we were motivated to buy earlier, and the author will get the sale.
Additionally, Ryan suggests that a queue...

Apple to create new HTML5 content for website
Apple has published a new job posting for a Creative Technology Manager, tasked in part with creating new HTML5 content at Apple.com, with support for iOS devices.
The listing seeks an individual who "...will be responsible for driving web-standard (HTML5) innovation that enhances and redefines the marketing of Apple's products and services to millions of consumers. Work will also include exploring opportunities with apple.com, email and mobile/multi-touch experiences on the iPhone and iPad."
Of course, HTML5-powered content has already begun to appear on Apple's website. Recently, a movie showtimes page has appeared that lets users find location-based movie showings, view theater locations on a map, and view trailers. I've added it to my iPhone's home screen as it's so useful.

The 7 Dodgy Sales Guys That Ruin Electronics Stores...
In general, electronics salesmen hold a respectable place in the salesmen hierarchy. Generally speaking, of course. That doesn’t mean there aren’t bad apples. And by bad apples we mean rotten, maggot-infested shriveled skin-hanging-to-cores that resemble nothing of the sweet, luscious fruit we know and love as apple. We’re using guys to cut down on pronouns, but don’t worry gals, you can suck this bad just as well as the gents.

Tim Cook rumors affect Apple, HP stock
Late yesterday morning, a rumor hit the the Internet suggesting that Apple's COO Tim Cook was going to leave the company to become HP's CEO. As a result, Apple's stock took a dip while HP's showed a sudden spike.
In morning trading, Apple's stock fell nearly US$17 (or 5%), while HP's rose by more than $0.40 (over 1%). Clearly, investors like Tim Cook, and they saw his rumored departure as detrimental to Apple and a win for HP. Fortunately for Cupertino, it's not true.
Cook quickly denied the rumor, saying that he "...loves Apple" and is not going to HP. In January of this year, there was a rumor that Cook would become the CEO of GM, which also turned out to be false...

Recently I needed to delete 2,000 photos from my iPad manually. Manually clicking on each photo to select it for deleting would take forever. So I figured out this combination of gestures to do it faster.
After coming back from a holiday to Europe I had several thousand photos on my iPad. I had already synced to the Mac, and now needed to delete them from the iPad. The only method I could see would be to turn off syncing. But that also meant that photos I wanted to keep on the iPad got deleted as well. I could have done that and just resynced the images I wanted back to the iPad, but I wanted to just remove some of the images. Looking in the Photos app I could not find any method for bulk selecting the images I wanted to delete. I tried several things and eventually found some tricks.
Trick 1: Multi-selecting images. Normally you tap an image to select it for emailing or deleting. I found that if you tap and hold your finger on the image for...

Fix a non-connecting Bluetooth controller
Occasionally the bluetooth process can decide it doesn't want to connect to any devices. Turning bluetooth off means you can't re-enable, but with Bluetooth Explorer, you can force it to do so.
When in this broken Bluetooth state, trying to connect to any Bluetooth device will cause an error. I usually try turning off Bluetooth when it has issues, but in this state it will refuse to turn back on (the menu bar option for 'Turn Bluetooth On' is greyed out). I'm sure a restart would fix, but I've found that if you have the Developer Utilities installed, Bluetooth Explorer.app will do the trick.
Simply start up the app, located in /Developer/Applications/Utilities/Bluetooth/, and it will give you a message about turning on the controller -- ignore this, as it doesn't seem to help. Once it's started, go to the 'Utilities' menu and select 'HCI Controller Selector'. In most machines, I think you'll just have one 'Apple Inc,...

A quick roundup of iOS text editors with Dropbox...
This morning we received word from Jesse Grosjean at Hog Bay Software that his new app, PlainText (free, in-app purchase to remove ads), is now available on the App Store. It's one of several iOS text editors that feature support for Dropbox, so we thought a quick roundup of these apps was in order. If you're thinking about joining me for NaNoWriMo 2010 starting on November 1st, it's a good idea to think about what device(s) you'll be writing on and getting your writing software ready to roll as soon as you can. Text editors make excellent writing tools, since they're bare bones and don't get in the way of putting words onto "paper."
First, let's take a look at PlainText (see screenshot above). Hog Bay Software is the same company that...

TUAW's Daily App: Movie Night Out
Movie Night Out is a fun and free little app that can help with that seemingly ever-present question: "So what do you want to do tonight?" It's a piece of cake to use. Just punch in what you want to do for your movie night (maybe hit up some shopping, see the movie, and then grab dessert, or do dinner, check out an action hit, and then get coffee). The app will automatically find some options for each of your choices and put together a schedule that will let you do all three. You can check out information and reviews for all of the options, and even map out, share on Facebook or Twitter, or save your "night" for another time. There's not really anything here that you can't find in other apps, but the smooth interface and fun randomization of your choices make the free app worth a download.

Where iPad Goes, There Goes Apple
Confusion reigned in the market Tuesday, as the Dow, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq each slipped into early-morning freefalls, then rebounded to gains by the end of the day of 46.10, 5.54 and 9.82, respectively. That was caused by weak economic data, with consumer confidence slipping and the price of gold, which bears an inverse relation to the stock market hitting a new record of $1,309.20 an ounce. The confusion saw shares of Apple tumbling to $286.97 at one point, then shooting up to $289.32 in highly volatile trading.
