Latest iPod Nano's Materials Cost Just $43.73,...

Six generations on, and the cost of materials has decreased dramatically from the first-ever iPod Nano, which cost $89.97—for just 2GB. The 8GB version that came out recently has parts totaling $43.73.

Even the second-gen iPod Nano, which was double the capacity of the first one, cost a whopping $72.24. Of course, this was back in the day when a 4GB iPod Nano cost $199 upfront, compared to the $149 an 8GB-er costs now.

iSuppli has listed manufacturing costs at around $1.37, and while this is the first model to contain a touchscreen component, the screen...

New Apple TV firmware: iOS-based and available now

Just slightly ahead of the new Apple TV's arrival at purchasers' doorsteps, Apple has posted the restore firmware for the new device (download link). The firmware's filename and .ipsw extension both confirm what practically everyone already knew: the new Apple TV runs on a flavor of iOS, the same operating system running on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. That, combined with the Micro-USB "service port" on the Apple TV's backside, means it's only a matter of time until it gets jailbroken.

Apple TV running iOS also means it would be relatively trivial for Apple to introduce an App Store for the device. In fact, with a more general-purpose version of something like Apple's Remote app, Apple could very easily allow existing iOS devices to act as a universal remote for virtually any...

The App Store review office at 1 Infinite Loop has officially frozen over: we've gotten word that the official Google Voice application is on its way to the iPhone in the next few weeks. In fact, we've heard from a source close to Google that it's already been approved — Google just needs to revamp the application to work with the iPhone 4 and iOS's multitasking capabilities. If you're a Google Voice user and you're on an iPhone, this is great news.

It's been a long, long road to get here. Last July, we broke the news that Apple had blocked the official Google Voice application, which eventually sparked an FCC inquiry into the matter. Apple claimed that the application

TUAW Review: Tagalicious for iTunes metadata,...

Tagalicious is a $20 Mac application from the The Little App Factory (best known for their excellent DVD ripper RipIt), which will clean up your iTunes library metadata, fetch artwork, and even find lyrics. So far, it's been extremely impressive both in accuracy and price.

I had a Guns N' Roses song "1-01 Sweet Child O' Mine.mp3" with existing metadata saying it was the song "Sweet Child O' Mine" from their Greatest Hits album. Tagalicious said it was "Welcome to the Jungle." I played the file in iTunes, and sure enough, my metadata was wrong. It was "Welcome to the Jungle." I have no idea how Tagalicious figured that out, but I suspect it is guilty of practicing witchcraft.

The current version 1.0.1 shows a great deal of promise, although it lacks some more advanced features. Then again, that is what version 1.x...

CineTap for Netflix

But CineTap adds some great features to the experience that the Netflix app doesn't include. The app is amazingly fast and absolutely gorgeous, taking full advantage of the iPad's screen real estate. Instead of lists, it uses posters to represent movies that can be scrolled left or right, or if you tap the Show All button, the line expands to fill the screen with posters that can then be scrolled up or down. In Show All mode, you'll see 20 posters plus a...

Of the 2,300 polled, 59% said that Android had the 'best long-term outlook,' compared with just 35% who pegged Apple's iOS with that label. But three out of four said that iOS offers the best 'near-term' outlook, with 76% tagging Apple's operating system as the best revenue opportunity."

Cabinet members in Saskatchewan getting iPads to...

The Canadian Broadcasting Company is reporting that 18 Canadian cabinet ministers and five senior staff members in the province of Saskatchewan are receiving iPads in an attempt to get a handle on the costly consumption of paper. With the cost of the 64GB 3G iPad running about CDN$879 plus fees and taxes, the initial cost of the iPads will run about CDN$23,000. However, the government expects that double that amount will be saved in the first year alone, since paper and printing costs will be cut drastically, and fewer courier runs will be required to deliver physical documents.

One senior official in the premier's office noted that he'll save 68 boxes of paper in his office alone in the first year. He noted that a single cabinet minister can often be loaded down with six to 10 kilograms of paper in a typical week. The government...

Patent illustrations hint at double-dock iPad, touch...

Patently Apple has a few new patent illustrations from China that may hint at future iPad hardware features. The first is a second dock on the side of the tablet. As you can see above, the connector would come in handy if you wanted to view the iPad in landscape form, but didn't want to have a cable sticking out of the side. Personally, I can't really see Apple duplicating functionality in this way, though -- while a second port would be handy, it seems a waste to have a completely separate port used only half the time. Like most patents, this is only an idea at this point -- Apple isn't required to actually use it in a future release.

The second idea is more interesting, in my mind: the images show what seems to be a touch-sensitive area on the corner of the front of the iPad. PA presumes that this...

Apple's iAd hot on Google's heels in...

Apple is likely to end the year in a dead heat with Google for mobile ad sales, according to an estimate by research firm IDC. Each company is predicted to have a 21 percent share of the market—a far cry from Steve Jobs' assertion that Apple would control 50 percent by the end of the year, but enough to influence a drop in both Microsoft and Google's shares.

IDC predicts that the total mobile ad market will more than double in size by the end of 2010 to $500 million per year. According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Apple's introduction of iAd has spurred a rush into the mobile ad market with Google, Microsoft, and Apple buying companies and upgrading their systems to adapt.

As the market continues to balloon, all three companies are struggling to get a handle on it. IDC projects that...

TUAW Review: iGrabber, a cheap way to digitize old...

The other day while I was attempting to clean up my office, I came across a bunch of old MiniDV tapes from various vacations that my wife and I had taken over the years. That got me thinking about the 8mm videotapes from the pre-MiniDV age, and the even older VHS vacation tapes from the Pleistocene Era. Since I have done a pretty good job of going to a paperless office, I figured it was about time to make my other media go digital as well.

I don't necessarily want to edit the movies right now -- at this point, all I want to do is get the raw video transferred to my iMac, and then at some future date, when I have the time (like 20 years from now), I'll transform them into mini-documentaries. The big concern I had was getting the video into my Mac, and since I no longer shoot video with tapes, I needed something that would just get the job done with a minimum of fuss and cost.

A quick Amazon search...

Apple's iAd service is a relative newcomer to the mobile ads industry, which is probably why it's completely falling apart. No, sorry Carol, we're kidding -- Apple's service is doing extremely well, and it's already threatening established mobile advertising services like Google and Yahoo!. IDC claims that Apple will end the year with 21 percent of the market, which means that in less than a year's time, the company will have picked up almost a quarter of a rapidly growing and expanding industry. Google's share is dropping, and that's in addition to the AdMob purchase it made a while back as well. That is a phenomenal start for the iAd platform.

And in fact, IDC is convinced that Apple's gigantic entry into the ads market has actually buoyed...

Apple Cracks Ping's Door a Little

Apple has updated its social network for music, Ping, which it released at the beginning of the month to less than rave reviews. The changes address a major complaint from users upon its initial rollout -- the dearth of social features. To be sure, Apple hasn't addressed all the issues -- or even the main one -- with Ping. However, the enhancements it has made appear to be mollifying social networkers accustomed to greater control over how they use a platform. Ping's main perceived failing is that it is limited to the iTunes ecosystem.

RIM shadows Apple, Google with BlackBerry Ad Service

RIM kicked off BlackBerry DevCon today with plans for its own mobile ad service in the vein of Apple's iAd or Google's AdMob. BlackBerry Advertising Service will give app writers access to multiple ad networks to subsidize free or cheap apps. Developers will get a similar 60 percent cut of any ad revenue, but RIM is hoping to avoid iAd-level control and will give the advertisers and ad networks direction over the creative presentation of apps....

iPod nano built into Dreamcast VMU

I saw the new iPad nano for the first time this weekend, and though I knew it was small, of course, I was surprised by just how small it was. Despite the tiny little touchscreen, it really is about the size of the old shuffle. In fact, it's small enough to fit inside one of the old Visual Memory Units from the Sega Dreamcast. Unfortunately, the original controls don't work, and because the nano doesn't actually run any apps, you can't play anything even resembling the old VMU games that the extra controller units used to play in conjunction with the old console. But it is a nice little case for the new nano, and of course, it's just dripping with nostalgia.

You can find more information and pictures on the maker's website, which is in...

Why I Love An Imperfect $70 Wooden iPhone Case [...

With free iPhone cases abounding, an iffy economy, and a new truck project that's capable of taking every last dollar I can throw at it, why did I buy a $70 iPhone case? Because it's the one I've always wanted.

Wood is the best material. It's second only to leather for how nice it feels in the hand—and even that's debatable. It is theoretically sustainable, assuaging the tortured consumer soul with eco-positive lubrication. And it's just pretty.

While I've got nothing but respect for Dieter Rams, the legendary designer's influence over modern electronics has left us with a world of geometric shapes, cold metal, and monochromatic plastics. The age of wood panelling in...

Apple's advertising for the FaceTime video chat feature on the iPhone 4 is emotional and effective, and now the ads are making it to the European market. All of the ads are backed with the universally-known voice of Louis Armstrong singing "When You're Smiling," and there is no audible dialog, so these ads can be used in just about any European market. So far, they've made it to the U.K., Italy, and Spain.

The ads are sponsored by carriers 3Italia, Vodafone, and Orange. Click the Read More link to view the videos.

AMD's Radeon HD 6700 series has had virtually all of its details leak today through a forum post at Chinese site Chiphell. The new series, now pitched as mid-range, is due to have "twice the horsepower" of the 5700 series it replaces. Clock speeds and memory bandwidth should go higher and give much larger texture fill rates as well as more than a 60 percent boost to the brute computing strength: a Radeon HD 6770 would produce about 2.3 teraflops, or more than the older but higher-end Radeon HD 5850's 2 teraflops....

Social Networking App iStreamer Displays Tweets in...

If you ever played with the ill-fated Twitter rip-off Plurk, iStreamer will seem familiar. It's a social feed service which displays tweets, RSS feeds and other updates in a timeline, scrolling cross-ways like a nice desk dashboard accessory.

Virtually any type of update can be added to the timeline, even search keywords. If you set up an alert for "alligators eating toast" you'll see updates—however infrequent—scrolling across the screen automatically. You can catch up on updates you may've missed if you popped out, by scrolling tactile-ly yourself.

The video below, shot by CrunchGear, shows off the app well. It's a bit of a commitment at $4, so you'll be wanting to ensure it's going to offer what you need from a social app over the likes of the official Twitter app. [iTunes via...

Apple is the most-covered tech company

Here's a bit of news that's no shock to us. According to the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, Apple receives more coverage from the press than any other tech company.

Google commanded 11.4 percent of articles while 3 percent were primarily about Microsoft. The study used data from 52 newspapers, broadcast, and websites from June 2009 through June 2010.

What's powering Apple's popularity? Its computers represent only a fraction of those in use. However, the iPhone and the iPod's meteoric rise to stardom, and ...

Safari Extension highlight: gleeBox

With the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.

gleeBox will certainly delight keyboard jockeys, as it replaces many browser-based tasks you'd typically complete by mousing around with super-easy hotkey commands. For example, you can call on URLs by hitting the proper command and typing the name of the URL in the resulting overlay. In fact, it'll recognize what you're typing so you needn't type the whole thing.

gleeBox also executes bookmarklets in the same way, so you can add a long article to Instapaper, for example, without ever touching the mouse.

It's not for everyone, but those who like keeping their hands on the keyboard at all times should find it useful.

Apple TVs are on the way from Shenzhen

Wow.

No sooner had we published the post about Apple TVs being queued for shipping than our TUAW mailboxes were filled with a steady stream of shipping notices.

The new Apple TVs are now being shipped from Shenzhen, China to a variety of destinations, and most people are seeing either Thursday, September 30 or Friday, October 1 as the delivery date.

I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl about the shipment - a middle-aged, slightly overweight schoolgirl with a beard, but you get the idea.

Thanks to the many tipsters who let us know about the packages that shipped while we were sleeping.

Apple, Google extend deal for iOS

Business Insider is reporting that Apple and Google have extended the deal that brought Google search to the iOS. In a recent interview with Charlie Rose, Google CEO Eric Schmidt mentioned that his company's arrangement with Apple has been "recently extended."

"Apple is a company we both partner and compete with. We do a search deal with them, recently extended, and we're doing all sorts of things in maps and things like that."

That should extinguish any lingering rumors that Bing will become the default search engine on future iOS devices/updates. Presently, Bing is an option on the iOS, but Google is the default.

Change in iPhone policies prompts EU to drop...

The European Commission has dropped not one, but two antitrust investigations into Apple—one for the company's decision to restrict tools used in iOS development, and the other for forcing iPhone users in Europe to return to the country of purchase in order to get warranty repairs. Both of these policies have since been updated since the EU first opened its investigations, and the Commission appears to be pleased with the changes.

The lesser known of the two issues—at least to those outside the EU—concerned iPhone repairs and where, exactly, users could go to get them. Apple said that users who bought iPhones could only get them fixed in the country of purchase, which proved to be a frustrating rule for Europeans on-the-go. (The US equivalent would be if you were restricted to the same...

Disable Ping Dropdowns in iTunes 10.0.1

iTunes 10.0.1 introduces a new feature: most items now have a 'Ping' dropdown button where the Music Store arrow links used to be. These appear even if you've disabled Ping.

The buttons cannot be disabled in the UI, but there's a Terminal fix to do it.
First, quit iTunes just in case. Then, start Terminal.app and enter:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown 1

When iTunes is restarted, the Ping buttons should have disappeared. To reverse, just repeat, using '0' rather than '1', or alternatively delete the setting altogether to ensure default behavior:

defaults delete com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown

Unfortunately, the old 'show-store-arrow-links' hack no longer works. However, it turns out the setting has just changed to 'show-store-link-arrows' and now defaults to off to allow for the default Ping buttons. To restore the arrows:

Using a Skim-annotated PDF on an iOS device

The notes I added to a PDF file with Skim were not visible on my iPod Touch after exporting it as a PDF with the embedded notes, dragging it to the books section on iTunes, and syncing. After some experimentation, the solution I found is:

  • From Skim: Print ¬ª Open in Preview.
  • In Preview: Save the file as a PDF.
  • And then drag the saved file to iTunes for syncing.

If you don't know it, Skim is an open source PDF reader and note-taker for Mac OS X. It's got some nifty features. The manual is online here.

New Apple TVs prepared for shipment

We received a lot of tips today from people who ordered the new $99 Apple TV on September 1st and have, like me, been anxiously checking the order status in the online Apple Store. As of today, many orders are showing the message you see above -- that the device has been "prepared for shipment" sometime in September.

Well, today is September 27th, which doesn't leave all that much time for Apple or the OEM to ship these devices. My guess is that the 747 freighters are lining up on the tarmac in Shanghai or Hong Kong, waiting to be loaded with the first half-million or so Apple TVs.

Fellow TUAW blogger Mike Rose and I both ordered our Apple TVs shortly after the announcement on September 1st, so whoever gets the first one will probably take dibs on doing a full review of the new iOS-powered streaming video box. Be sure to visit TUAW regularly this week for all of your Apple TV news.

TUAW's Daily App: Aftermath

I'll be honest -- I heard that Aftermath was a zombie game and almost gave up on it. I wouldn't be offended if you did the same, since lots of developers (especially iPhone developers) are depending a little too much on zombies for their gameplay. Yes, it's fun to fight the walking undead, but they're used over and over again because a) they're easy to program, and b) they let you make a "shooting humans" game without getting involved in the whole morality thing.

But Aftermath is still worth a look. While a lot of zombie games on the store go abstract or silly, this one sticks pretty close to realistic, and it has some serious quality and interesting gameplay behind it. You're fighting zombies and moving through levels, but instead of aiming and shooting a gun, you're actually aiming a flashlight, and your gun automatically fires for you. The projected light...
