No comment: Chromium OS running on iPad

Here's one submitted in the spirit of George Mallory with no comment. Inventive soul Hexxeh has gotten the Chromium OS up and running on an iPad. Chromium is the open source version of Google's Chrome OS. After some effort and a bit of magic, Hexxeh has got it mucking about inside an iPad.

Don't expect lightning speed from this quick demo, and note the bonus tapping that the spiffy cursor provides. We're not going to run out and try it, but we're glad enough to watch someone else do it. Good work, Hexxeh.

Apple closes Beijing store temporarily to thwart...

Despite the iPhone's official release in China, a grey market continues to thrive. So much so that shoppers are buying units from Apple for private resale in such large quantity, that Apple had to temporarily down the Beijing Apple Store.

According to M.I.C Gadget, the trouble started when Apple lifted the 2-per-customer restriction at the Beijing store. People were buying up to 30 iPhones at a time, which they would privately resell for a profit. In fact, many were selling right outside the store. Things got out of hand as the crowd quickly swelled and scuffles broke out between the mass-quantity buyers and individuals looking for a single phone. Security eventually shut the store down.

Within hours, the store re-opened with a new policy. Customers must show ID when...

Rumor: Final Cut Studio update delayed until 2011

Those waiting on an update to Final Cut Studio may have to continue to do so, as a new rumor suggests it won't be released this year. Quoting a "source," Hardmac reports that the development of the next major update to Final Cut Studio has suffered "significant setbacks" and won't be available until 2011.

Hardmac notes that the scope of the project has been reduced as well, and the unified interface is a casualty of that reduction. The source says that differences between the team responsible for Shake and the team working on Motion are partly responsible, and representative of the overall difficulty in uniting all of the suite's applications.

Keep in mind that it's a rumor and not written in stone. If it turns out to be true, it's bad news for FCS users who are jonesing for something new.

iOS development: More lucrative than expected

Open-First recently conducted a survey of 110 App Store developers to examine how much they've been earning vs. their initial expectations. Nearly half of respondents -- 48% -- revealed that they're earning more than the expected.

The study was conducted between August 30th and September 10th, 2010 via online questionnaire, followed-up by phone. In the end, 78% of respondents rated themselves as satisfied, very satisfied, or somewhat satisfied with the experience of publishing to the App Store, and 99% said they'd continue to do so.

Of course, not all developers surveyed were happy. A full 28% said they're making less than expected. Still, they must be hopeful, as nearly 100% of participants said they'd continue to sell mobile apps through Apple.

defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE
Finally, quit Terminal and re-launch iTunes. Presto! The drop-down is gone. The Mac Observer also describes how to restore the menu as well as how to re-orient the control buttons in the upper left-hand corner to a horizontal, rather than...

iPad owners bugged less by ads than other device...

iPad owners are a different breed from those who own other portable devices and e-book readers, according to a new survey by Nielsen. Nielsen's Connected Devices Playbook finds that, compared to owners of the Kindle and Sony Playstation Portable, iPad owners are more likely to be young, male, and receptive to advertising.

While the survey shows that many devices have a near 50-50 gender split, the iPad and the Sony PSP scales tip towards men—65 percent of iPad owners are male, and 63 percent are also under the age of 35. The Kindle, though, swept some categories away from the iPad: Kindle owners are the wealthiest, with 44 percent earning more than $80,000 a year, and more educated (27 percent have master's degrees or doctorates).

PlayOn TV for iPhone finally approved

Now that the proverbial floodgates have opened at the App Store, we're starting to see some apps showing up that were previously denied entry. Internet TV provider PlayOn was one of those companies that had tried to get their iPhone app approved months ago, but was told by Apple that their service needed to be a Web app instead. The company complied with an HTML5 solution, but a native app wasn't available... until now.

PlayOn Mobile is a free app that works with a subscription service ($39.99 for first year, $19.99 after that or $79.99 for a lifetime subscription) to stream content from a number of providers to your device over Wi-Fi or 3G. Before you get too excited, though, note that you need to be running PlayOn PC on a Windows PC to get that...

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I have the worst memory. I also have a bad short-term memory. This makes it tough to remember the things that pop into my head throughout the day, and it makes it especially hard to keep track of tasks and other actions that I must take. I've wanted to use my iPhone to "bottle" these fleeting thoughts for years, but nothing on the App Store allowed me to do this without some sort of distraction.

Enter Captio, a new app from Ben Lenarts of Boonbits. It's a small note taking application that allows you to capture thoughts, ideas, tasks, and other tidbits of information as they come to you. You may say, "But there are a million of those apps on the store, Josh, you handsome man!" Given, but Captio has one killer feature that everyone else has failed to...

View in-browser PDFs in Google Chrome

To the best of my knowledge, no third-party PDF plugin on the Mac allows for the inline viewing of PDFs in Google Chrome, fortunately there is a way. As of Chrome 6, Google bundles an experimental PDF plugin, which is disabled by default.

To enable it:

  • Type about:plugins in the omnibox.
  • You should see a disabled plugin called 'Chrome PDF Viewer;' click the Enable button under this plugin.

You should now be able to view PDFs in Chrome. There are a few rough edges to this plugin. The occasional PDF will not display properly (in particular, it seems to choke on PDFs that have restrictions in effect — printing, copying, etc), but the vast majority show up just fine. The viewer is very fast, and has resizing controls available in the bottom-right corner of the window.

Note that there is currently no loading indicator for PDFs, so if you click on a large document, it may seem like the tab has frozen,...

Hold your iPhone in a Batman-style utility belt

Being the huge Batman fan that I am, I couldn't pass this one up. What you see above is an actual Batman-style utility belt called the TDK Utility Pouch, modeled after the one worn in the last Batman movie. But instead of compartments for gas canisters, audio bugs, or batarangs, this belt has a large pouch built specially for holding a cell phone exactly like the iPhone. You can adjust the various pouches on the belt as you see fit, but the largest one is perfectly iPhone-sized.

It makes sense -- the iPhone can do most of the things that the Bat-computer can do, and what better tool to fight crime than a GPS, camera, and 3G-equipped handheld device. The Bat-belt doesn't come cheap, though -- the prop company selling it wants $149.00, and there are only 750 out there. But if you want to really go all the way for Halloween (or maybe start handing out some vigilante justice yourself -- though...

Estimates show netbooks stagnating post-iPad

A new DisplaySearch study today both confirmed and predicted that the iPad was having a cooling effect on netbooks. Breaking down netbooks by category, it showed the 10-inch netbook's sales having dropped this spring by eight percent year-over-year after more than two years of growth. In small netbooks, below nine inches, the effect was even more dramatic as the category plummeted 89 percent to account for just 100,000 PCs worldwide....

When Are Tablets Better Than A Smartphone?

Tablets are becoming quite the rage on the technical market, with seemingly everyone releasing their own version (and with a variety of operating systems). TUAW's Daily App: Weather HD for iPhone

You may already know all about Weather HD -- the app made a nice splash when it was released early in the iPad's life. But Vimov has just released it for the iPhone, and even on the smaller screen, it leaves quite an impression. The idea is that instead of a tiny little icon or a big number telling you the weather, you get a full, bright screen of whatever the weather's like near you (or what it's going to be like in an hourly or daily forecast).

The app is super simple on purpose, so if you're looking for full maps, video, or more detailed information, you'll have to go elsewhere (I usually use the free Weather Channel app for more in-depth weather updates). Still, for just 99 cents, Weather HD is worth having around if all you need to check...

Reminders App Wears the Badge but Lacks True Grit

To me, the ideal reminder application is aggressive, rude, and above all persistent. I want something that makes some kind of grand entrance when the moment arrives -- a noise, a buzz, an obnoxious interruption. And I don't want something that meekly backs off and forgets about the task I gave it after I tell it I'd like to procrastinate once, twice, or even 15 times, like I've somehow hurt its feelings or something. I want it to be as doggedly determined as the snooze alarm next to my bed, only with more information and with a more adjustable interval.

Second-gen Apple TV teardown posted, 8GB flash drive...

The second-generation Apple TV is almost here and the cool cats at iFixit have posted a complete teardown of the device, which apparently includes a small 8GB of onboard storage and the same 256MB of RAM found in the iPad and fourth-generation iPod touch.

Per the report, the new Apple TV uses a Samsung K9LCG08U1M 8GB NAND Flash chip, which is the same part found during the site’s iPad teardown. The memory is likely used to cache content that is being streamed.

“This is a pretty remarkable amount of storage for a US$99 device,” the solutions provider wrote.

Interestingly, logic board on the hardware shows solder pads that would fit an iPod 30-pin dock connector, perhaps implying what could come in future versions of the hardware.

“This Apple TV seems to be a couple of connectors shy of a full-on...

What should Apple do with Final Cut Pro?

In February it was announced that Apple had cut some staff working on its Final Cut video editing software suite. Some folks took it as a bad sign, that Apple was ignoring the software -- indeed, all its pro level software - to focus on consumer products (specifically, iOS devices). So what should Apple do with Final Cut Pro?

February's cuts could represent the end of an upgrade development cycle, as the next version upgrade of Final Cut could already be in preparation. Or it could be a bad sign for Final Cut Pro.

Google Debuts Gallery of Android Phones

One of the constant complaints about the Android diaspora is its fragmentation the increasingly diverse multiplicity of OS versions and devices that are so relevant yet so confusing to the average consumers mobile decision-making process.Apparently, the powers that be (at Google, that is) have heard users complaints on this score and have created the Google Phone Gallery, a carousel of devices that displays images, phone features, manufacturer and carrier information and more. You can sort phones by hardware manufacturer, by phone service provider and even by country, a feature we know our international readers will be very happy about. Finally, you can select multiple devices to do side-by-side comparisons.Theres a tab that reads Phones, too. This seems a bit redundant for a Phone Gallery, unless you consider the rising tide of Android tablets. We hope to see a few non-phone mobile devices featured in this gallery in the very near future. All these devices ship with the standard set...

Michael Arringtons Road to Millions

Earlier this week, AOL snapped up TechCrunch, a technology blog network started by former attorney Michael Arrington, for an undisclosed amount of money. The final price is said to be somewhere between $25 million to $60 million. The acquisition has sparked a lot of conversation, especially among his peers.
To me, its an opportunity to reflect on the past decade and the evolution of blog-based media.Gawker Media and Weblogs Inc., have been the torchbearers of this new fast-paced, slightly quirky, highly passionate form of media.
Michael and I, along with my dear friend Rafat Ali, were early converts to this new kind of media. Like Arrington, I learned much about blogging from Dave Winer and Doc Searls. I married blogging to my analytical and old-school reporting skills, and it turned into GigaOM, the company. Rafat took his love of media and content and started PaidContent, which was acquired by The Guardian. Michael took his doggedness and heart-on-sleeve passion for...
