RAM for RiscPC and A7000 systems

Suitable for fitting in almost all RiscPC and A7000 (and derivitive) machines.

Although Fast Page (FP) ws originally specified for early models most machines will work perfectly with EDO. In fact, experience shows that the modern EDO SIMMs are actually more reliable than FP. You should always fit EDO to A7000FE machines like the A7000+, RiscStation and Mico.

If you have a RiscPC 600 then see the notes RiscPC 600 RAM below

There is always the potential for timng problems with RiscPCs, especially those fitted with a Strong ARM processor. It is never possible to guarantee that RAM will work in any particular machine, in particular when fitted with a 586 PC card. We therefore offer a refund (less carriage) if RAM is not satisfactory.

Risc PC 600 RAM

The early RiscPC 600 machines were fitted with SIMM sockets which were higher than on more recent machines so mamy modern double sided SIMMs won't fit. In particular this applies to 32 Mb FP and you will need to fit High Clearance (HC). If in doubt check the model number in the centre rear of the motherboard. If this is 0197.000 you need HC, if it's 0197.100 or 1208.000 you don't.

All RiscPC 600 motherboards with an 0197 number were fitted with capacitor C32. This was intended to improve stability with large amounts of RAM, but when larger SIMMs appeared (they didn't exists when the RiscPC was launched) it was found to have exactly the opposite effect. If you intend ti fit 64 Mb SIMMs you should therefore remove this capacitor. It's a small surface mount device, and is located as shown below.

It's easily removed using a normal soldering iron but if you have any doubts about your ability to do this then don't touch it. If you mess it up you could damage the motherboard. If you don't have a friend you can trust then most TV repair shops would do it for a few pounds
