iTunes terms refer to missing Ping sidebar

The latest revision of terms for the iTunes Store may point to a missing feature, observers remark. "We have changed the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions to provide you notice that if you have opted in to the Ping social network and use the new Ping Sidebar," the text reads, "iTunes will send information to Apple about the content you select in your iTunes library in order to provide you with Ping personal recommendations." There is no identifiable sidebar for Ping, whether in iTunes 10 or iOS....

Multitouch casing could remove buttons from iPhone,...

Back before the iPhone was formally announced, there was talk that Steve Jobs was simply not happy with the product because Apple's engineers couldn't figure out how to eliminate all of the physical buttons. There was just no practical way to put the functions of a power switch or home button into a touch-only interface. But all of that hasn't stopped Apple from trying.

A recently-filed patent by Apple clearly shows that the company means business when it comes to sleek, clutter-free interfaces. This particular patent aims to take advantage of multiple sides of a device (in this case, it appears to be the iPad, as pictured), including parts of the casing, in order to perform functions that physical buttons currently handle...

Microsoft tries to evade image with Mac vs. PC on...

Microsoft took its anti-Mac marketing to social networking in the past day with a PC vs. Mac Facebook app on its Australian fan page. The app hopes to disrupt the stereotypes of Windows users created by Apple's ads by having visitors guess each other's computer choices and has them take quizzes to guess their "allegiances," though the questions don't have much association with computers. Visitors get a chance to win an HP Pavilion dv6 notebook in return for an essay on how they'd use Windows 7 to escape a desert island....

7-inch iPad coming? Loose lips in Shenzen say yes

Since the iPad was first announced in January of this year, there's been speculation that a smaller form factor -- say, something between an iPad and an iPod touch -- would be added to the line.

Shanzai.com, a site that follows China's technology industry, has posted a rumor to the effect that Apple's next tablet will resemble "an oversized iPhone 4" rather than a smaller iPad. Shanzai says that they have "ears to the ground in Shenzen," the home of Apple contract manufacturer Foxconn, and that loose lips have stated that the 7" tablet is a "finished product."

Sam Levin of AppMinute.com and I discussed the possibility of a smaller tablet on a podcast...

New 11.6-inch MacBook Air Coming This Fall? [...

It looks as though Apple's long-neglected MacBook Air may finally be getting an overhaul. According to DigiTimes, an 11.6-inch Air is going to be on sale before the end of the calendar year.

It should be noted, first off, that DigiTimes has a relatively poor track record with this type of thing. But regardless of how solid their information is, there's no question that the timing is right for a MacBook Air refresh. Apple's left their ultraportable unattended since 2008. And while its competitors are jumping on Intel's ULV Core processors to crank out thinner, faster...

Accordance 9 is another big step forward in Bible...

Accordance, long regarded as the premier Bible study software for the Mac, has a new version 9 that's now available for download.

At first glance, it may look at a lot like version 8, but that's because most of the changes have gone on under the hood. Don't let that fool you into thinking this isn't a big update, though, because it is, and there's more coming.

Four primary new features will appeal to almost all users:

"Workspace Zones" are a new way of grouping tools. Put Bibles in one zone, dictionaries in another, or put related tools for a project together so that you can access them all at once. These also seem to work better side-by-side than what I was able to do previously. Maybe there was a way before, but if so, it's much, much easier now.

Learning a language is more than just translating words; you also have to understand syntax, grammar, idioms, and so forth. This won't make you a...

Confirmed: iPads in Target this October

The rumor is true: Target will begin selling the iPad in October. Reuters is reporting today that the official release date will be October 2nd, and Target will have all six models.

The launch will make Target the fourth vendor to sell iPads in the US, along with Best Buy, Micro Center, and Apple. Target is a discount chain here in the US with locations from coast to coast. There are many areas that have a Target but not an Apple Store, so this move will get the device physically in front of more users than Apple could.

Good luck to Apple and Target on their partnership.

What 10 years of Apple did to its main product

How time flies! In the year 2000, I was just finishing high school, listening to Bush, and becoming acquainted with Windows 2000. Back then, I knew very little about Apple, and I'd certainly not heard of the Bondi Bubble iMac (the first iMac was released in 1998). In 2010, well...how things have changed for me!

And, as illustrated by Brett Jordan in the graphic above, things have also changed at Apple.

It's incredible to think that the iPhone has taken center stage at Apple over the last three years. As noted by some of our commentators, there has been a real lack of Mac-centric news recently. Sure, there was the update to the iMac a few months ago, but it's glaringly obvious that the Mac has taken...

Apple sues startup over "pod" name

As we've seen before, Apple is laying claim to the word "pod." This time, the target is Sector Labs (SL), who are nearly 10 years into development of their Video Pod.

More accurately, Apple believes that customers will confuse SL's Video Pod for an Apple product because of the name. The company first gained the attention of Apple legal back in 2009.

Still, SL's Daniel Kokin doesn't see the problem. "My team started working on the Video Pod in 2000, and it took us years to go from prototype to funded," he said. "At that time, Apple didn't even enter our minds as a competitor." He goes on to note that his company's product focuses on projection, something that Apple is not doing.

This is hardly the first time...

NBC says no to iTunes rentals at 99 cents

With reports of credit cards being charged for Apple TV pre-orders, it's only a short time before Apple's hobby takes a rather serious step forward. But with only ABC and Fox having signed up to Apple's new $0.99 price point to rent television shows, it seems there's a lot hanging in the balance. Most notably, for Apple - and for those that purchase the Apple TV - whether other large television studios will follow suit and get on board with Apple's new strategy.

Recently, we reported that Warner Bros. was not best pleased with Apple's new TV episode price point. And now NBC has chimed in, too. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Investor conference, Chief Executive of NBC Universal Jeff Zucker said, "We do not think 99 cents is the right price point for our content," and continued by saying, "We thought it...

That 7-Inch iPad Rumor Just Won't Die, Will It...

The 7-inch iPad rumors just won't stop. After last August's rumor barrage, a Chinese rumor site with no track record claims that the fabled iPad 7-inches is now a "finished product", which looks more iPhone 4 than iPad:

Yes there will be a 7" tablet, yes it's well underway in terms of product development and in fact it's a finished product. Yes 5 plus different designs have been floating around to help Apple protect itself from people discovering its next product look and feel but... the final design will in fact bear more resemblance to the iPhone 4 stylings than the original iPad design.

Would you like an iPad that is not large enough to be actually useful yet too large to fit in your pocket? I will quote myself: Can "magic" fit in 7 inches? [...

A glimpse into the future by Mozilla concept phone

Watch out for the hottest concept mobile in town and the news is its not by Apple, Google, Motorola or even HTC. It was developed by a designer in his spare time as part of a Mozilla Labs project. Seabird is designer Billy Mays vision for a phone that aims to address some of the frustrations people have when interacting with small devices.
Seabird has two pico projectors. When placed in a dock it uses one of them to project the screen on a nearby wall for easier viewing and the other to project a full-size, virtual keyboard on the table where it sits. A user can then type on the virtual keyboard instead of a tiny on-screen or physical keyboard on the phone.
The dual pico projectors, located on the sides of the phone, could also be used without the dock to project half a keyboard each one on each side of the phone. The Seabird, on just a flat surface, enables netbook-quality interaction by working with the projectors angular distortion to deliver interface, rather than...

Mac 101: Preparing your old Mac for sale or recycling

It happens to all of us eventually (except for the Mac collectors). At some point, we decide that it's time to take that old Mac that we've just replaced and try to get a few bucks out of it. Some of us donate our machines to schools or other worthwhile organizations, and if we have really old equipment, we may just recycle it. In any case, there are some things you'll want to do to prepare the Mac for sale or recycling.

Step One: Make sure everything is backed up
There's nothing worse than nuking the hard drive on a computer and then realizing that you've just destroyed irreplaceable photos, documents, or recordings. Even if you're using Time Machine to back up your Mac onto an external hard disk drive, I recommend going through your important directories -- Applications, Documents, Downloads, Photos, Music, and...

As web designers and developers, what the future holds for the Internet is imperative for our livelihoods. If the Internet has radical changes in store for us, we need to understand how they might effect what we do to earn a living and what we'll need to do to adapt and keep pace — if that's even possible.

7-inch iPad 'finished,' may take after...

A 7-inch iPad does exist, and is in fact a finished product, rumors from Shenzhen, China are said to indicate. Although five or more designs are allegedly in circulation, these are said to be a distraction to prevent people from discovering the real one. Cosmetically, the latter is claimed to more closely resemble the iPhone 4 than the first-generation iPad....

Apple issues refunds for Apple TV pre-orders, cites...

A number customers who paid Apple for expedited shipping on the soon-to-ship Apple TV are receiving emails from the company Thursday informing them that those shipping charges have been waived due to a possible ‘delay.’

“Our records indicate that when you placed your order you paid for upgraded shipping,” Apple wrote in the emails. “Due to a delay, we may have not been able to meet our delivery commitment.”

Per AppleInsider, the email goes on to say that Apple has “processed a refund for the shipping charge on your order. Please contact your card-issuing bank for information on when the credit will be posted to your account.”

Rumor: Apple prepping smaller, lighter MacBook Air

Things may be about to change for Apple’s MacBook Air, the super-slim notebook perhaps receiving an LED-backlit display nearly two inches smaller than the current model.

Per DigiTimes, Apple has watched sales of its ultra-portable trickle off to levels believed to be immaterial to its bottom line. As such, the product line has received little attention from the company, undergoing just two minor revisions in a 29-month span — the latter of which took place well over a year ago.

At just 0.76″ at its thickest point, the MacBook Air is undoubtedly slim enough for its target audience of business travelers and those consistently on the go. However, sales of the device suggest that its 13.3″ footprint and 3 pound carrying weight may be a bit more than that class of customers would prefer, especially given the resounding success of Apple’s more compact and lighter 9.7″ iPad.

In an effort to make the...

TUAW's Daily App: Awesome Solitaire

Awesome Solitaire is (surprise!) an awesome solitaire game. The usual card game is so simple by now that presentation is everything, and Awesome Solitaire has presentation in spades. If you play in Awesome mode, the graphics are flashy, you get rewarded with points for combos, and the animation looks smooth and professional. Heck, the background is even animated with the accelerometer. My one argument is that there's no sound on the app at all -- as flashy and smooth as the graphics are, you'd think there would be some sparkling sounds to accompany them. But then again, I often turn the sounds on my phone down (especially in public), so the lack of sound on a pick up and play game like this doesn't hurt too much.

This is the absolute coolest version of solitaire you will ever play on your iPhone. There aren't a lot of actual game options (there are...

Quanta still on track to make 11.6-inch MacBook Air

Taiwan contractor Quanta was said today to still be on track to produce 11.6-inch MacBook Air notebooks this year. Its production would still be modest at 400,000 to 500,000 systems before the end of 2010 and suggests that Apple still considers the system a premium or specialized model. The Digitimes tip didn't give more details....

Rumor has Nokia likely to use Windows Phone 7

Nokia's decision to hire a former Microsoft executive as CEO may have also brought Windows Phone 7 into the company's OS choices if a rumor late Thursday is true. The company's board has reportedly given its new CEO Stephen Elop free rein to change operating systems as part of an overall shift in strategy. A "trusted" source for VentureBeat didn't expect WP7 to replace MeeGo or Symbian but that it would instead be a third choice....

Booq's Cobra Laptop and iPad Bags For Today...

Keeping with the snake theme, Booq's new Cobra range of four gadget-friendly bags are (mostly) affordable, but actually look really nice. My favorite is the Courier XS satchel—large enough for an iPad and the rest of your junk.

The Courier XS is $145, but if you're in need of something larger, there's the Cobra Slim L, a slim briefcase for $155. It can store laptops up to 17-inches in size, plus an iPad in the second non-scratch compartment.

Next up in size and cost is the Cobra Brief L, a medium-sized briefcase for laptops up to 17-inches. There's a few more pockets and compartments here, justifying the $255 price.

Heavy packers who need to cart around heaps of files, gadgets and their requisite chargers should check out the Cobra Case L, which is more expensive at $345 (bit too much, if you ask me), but it could probably double as an overnight bag. A...

Apple Reduces Audio Jack Size Without Changing the...

Apple may shave a few millimeters from future iPods and iPhones by using a new patent for a new audio jack. The device uses Pogo pins as conductive contacts.

Current iPods use a standard cantilever design. A cantilever is a metallic beam that is folded inside the case, providing a contact with the metal stereo plug. When you put the plug inside the jack, the beams bend, but present enough resistance to make a good contact with the plug's surface. However, to have enough resistance, they need to have an adequate size, which is too big for Apple at this point.

The new patent employs Pogo pins, which have been used for a long time in electronics to provide...

Data in the Cloud Still Governed by Obsolete Privacy...

The Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) was enacted in 1986 to protect user data from government oversight and significant portions haven't been updated since.

That's a problem, advocates say, because the law is now completely outdated. The law currently gives more protection to data you store locally and less to data kept in the cloud - an obvious problem in the age of Gmail, Facebook and Amazon Web Services.

Cloud computing haunted by privacy concerns

Technology companies and privacy advocates have been calling for Congress to update the legislation for years (see Coalition of Tech Companies Wants to Give You Digital Due Process). The law leaves consumers unprotected, they argue, and dampens the cloud computing sector's economic prospects.

As the law stands, providers can do little to assure users that their data will remain protected if someone in law enforcement or government wants to look at it. In many cases, law enforcement...

In Canada, the no-disc service costs $8, or about $7.74 US, versus the $9 minimum for the one-DVD plan in the US....
