External Link: Amazon Debuts Kindle for the Web

In the company's continuing effort to make the Kindle file format the de facto standard for electronic books (which should not be allowed to happen, given how inadequate the format is for anything but straight text), Amazon.com has launched "Kindle for the Web." Kindle for the Web is just a way to encourage people to preview the first chapter of a Kindle-format book in a Web browser, after which they can purchase the ebook for reading on a Kindle device or in Kindle software on a Mac, iOS device, or Windows-based PC. It's a smart move on Amazon's part, and notably different from how Apple has restricted access to the iBookstore to the iBooks app.

Jabra Go 660 headset boasts loss-free noise reduction

Jabra has unveiled the Go 660 in an attempt to stand out in the crowded Bluetooth headset field. The earpiece hinges on a new noise cancellation technique that Jabra claims is no-compromise. Although it uses dual microphones like most active noise reduction, the Go 660 is said to counteract the noise without lowering the audio quality of the call itself....

Snippets show FaceTime, DVD references in Apple TV...

In addition to significant product references, the new Apple TV firmware also contains some more unusual bits of code, reports note. Among these are files apparently related to video conferencing, even though the set-top doesn't have a FaceTime camera. Several PLIST files meanwhile make references to DVD manufacturers, including Sony, Sharp and Sanyo. No version of the Apple TV has included an optical drive....

First Look: Updated Apple Remote app on an iPad

As we reported earlier, Apple has updated the free Remote app for iPhone and iPad. It's about time. The new version looks fine on the iPad since it is not up-scaled. To pair the Remote software to your iTunes library, you must enter a 4-digit code* into iTunes on your Mac. From there, you are on the way. You only need to pair once.

Control over Wi-Fi is fast and responsive. The iPad makes a really nice remote for controlling media. Sonos will also soon offer an iPad remote (to join its popular iPhone app) for its whole house music system, and there are a...

Hands on: Remote app update with new iPad UI, Home...

Apple has released an update to its Remote app for iOS, adding in a few valuable new features. The app has been updated to support the iPhone 4's retina display and can now automatically detect iTunes libraries on your network that are set up for Home Sharing. Most importantly, however, the app has now officially gained iPad support, with a brand new UI that takes advantage of the iPad's screen real estate.

For those who aren't familiar with it, the Remote app allows users to control their Apple TVs and computers via their iOS devices. This is particularly helpful when searching for items on the Apple TV (typing out a movie name can become a chore when using the regular Apple Remote) or if you want to give party...

TUAW's Daily App: PipeRush

PipeRush is a fun little title that we haven't yet seen the likes of (as far as I know) on the iPhone. I remember this kind of game as Pipe Dream, though you may know it by a number of different names. The idea is that you're given a queue of pieces, and then your job is to assemble them in such a way that they all match up and allow water to flow within a certain time period. PipeRush doesn't add too much to this formula (though there are some power-ups to play with as you go through the levels), but what it does bring is a nice bit of polish. There's a cute lead character in Pippa, the pipe-laying plumber, and the graphics are simple and sparkly as you go along. Achievements and scoreboards are handled by Crystal, but with star ratings to chase across the game's 15 or so levels, I found plenty to do.

Xsilva LightSpeed Mobile brings Apple Store-like...

Xsilva Systems has been at the forefront of Mac Point-of-Sale systems for a while with their LightSpeed software. Now, they're bringing another member of the Apple hardware family into the LightSpeed fold.

LightSpeed Mobile is designed to extend LightSpeed away from a traditional cash register, by using an iPod touch and Linea-Pro "sled" to scan bar codes and swipe credit cards from anywhere in the store. If this sounds familiar, it's because the hardware is the same that is currently used in Apple retail stores, although they use a proprietary app.

For existing LightSpeed customers, LightSpeed Mobile is an additional US$1,299 (iPod touch not included). Complete turnkey...

Google Voice due on the App Store soon

TechCrunch has reported this morning that the Google Voice iOS app has been approved and should be on the App Store soon. This is potentially huge news for Google Voice customers.

Getting to this point wasn't easy to say to the least. Here's a brief recap of the saga. First, Apple pulled all Google Voice related apps from the App Store in July of 2009, which prompted an FCC inquiry. Apple responded by saying, in so may words, "Uh, we were just studying Google Voice." Google shot back with...

Steve Jobs' replacement home in Woodside, California should differ significantly from those of some other CEOs, newly exposed plans suggest. Originally submitted to town council to justify demolishing the historic Jackling House versus restoring it, the plans show a new single-family home roughly a third the size of its predecessor, and worth about $8.45 million. Apple TV under the hood: first look

As TUAW posted earlier, the iOS 4.1 firmware distribution for Apple TV has just gone live on Apple's Phobos web server. TUAW downloaded a copy and used the dev-team's decrypt keys to peek under the hood. Here's what we found about the "Mojave" Apple TV distribution.

tweetmeme_url='http://www.tuaw.com/2010/09/28/appletv-under-the-hood-first-look/';tweetmeme_source='tuaw';
First, as expected, there's no SpringBoard.app in Core Services. SpringBoard is the application that runs your iPhone's home screen, letting you launch applications by touching them. Instead, Apple TV seems to run Lowtide, an application responsible for all user interactions, which is derived from the previous Front Row application. Lowtide handles media playback, rentals, DRM management (Fair Play, of course), and other basic services.

It also supports Shared Libraries and the new Apple TV (I couldn't try it with the new Apple TV because I haven't got mine yet, but I can only imagine that it will work just the same).

Hands-on

Apple Remote is one of my favorite iOS applications. Simple and easy to use, it does just what it says it does: Remotely access your media libraries and play your songs or...

Hacker Dojo: An Innovative Way To Nurture Young...

Here in Silicon Valley, where flux seems like the status quo, one hot trend is innovation devoted to the cause of innovation itself.

Consider Hacker Dojo, a do-it-yourself tech incubator that last week staged its first startup showcase at its Mountain View quarters -- a rather low-rent rendezvous in contrast to DEMO, a glitzy three-day exhibit at the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara earlier this month where startups paid $18,500 to strut their stuff.

Are you using Apple's Ping?

Ping is Apple's first earnest foray into the social network game. Introduced with iTunes 10, Ping lets users see the music their friends are buying from the iTunes Store, leave comments, and point out what they like.

There are also several musicians participating. The more active among them post photos and videos, stories, and so on. It's a young network with lots of potential, but for now, some folks are less than impressed. A recent update to iTunes put Ping in your music library (it used to be limited to the iTunes Store) and added a big 'ol sidebar.

Our question to you is: are you using it? I'll admit that my interest has waned, and that's because nearly all of the updates I see are of the "[Person X] is...

Media Loves Apple and Its Army of Fans

cgriffin21 writes "Apple is getting more media attention right now than any other technology company, including Google. Microsoft, meanwhile, is languishing in the shadows like Cinderella on the night of the ball. That's the upshot of a study released Monday (PDF) by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, which found that Apple was the focus of 15.1 percent of media coverage between June 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. Google received 11.4 percent of media coverage during the period, while Microsoft garnered just 3 percent."

Foto Find: Angry Birds breakfast

This is super cute -- a breakfast styled to look just like the popular Angry Birds app. A woman had some complications during her pregnancy, and she was bedridden and restricted to only eating certain types of food during childbirth. So, her husband started making food art, using the various foods that she could eat in the morning, and he eventually came around to this little tribute to one of the most popular games on the App Store.

It's wild -- those are pickles and carrots along the bottom, whole grain Eggo waffles in the middle, halved hard boiled eggs for the birds, and I'm not quite sure what the pigs are; they're probably some kind of veggies. But he even got the eyes...

Many a nerd has dreamed of exploring space—the final frontier—as a child. But a handful of "self-admitted nerds" from the interactive design firm Sevnthsin are taking to the skies with a weather balloon, a hacked cooler, and the latest in mobile technology.

Calling their project Yavin IV (after a rebel base in the Star Wars universe), the small group from Minneapolis, Minnesota completed their first full launch on Friday. Ars was on the scene to capture the event, and we spoke with project...
