Apple Opens Up: Subtle iTunes 10.0.1 Update Makes...

Like many people, I activated Ping when Apple revealed it earlier this month, and then like many people I stopped using it. Where's the, um, social? Why is it saying I like all these Britney Spears remixes? Et cetera.

But the latest software update from Apple might go a little way toward fixing and answering at least one of these pressing questions.

One most notable changes in 10.0.1 is the ability to use Ping from within your own iTunes library, instead of having to manually search out music tracks you already owned in the tedious ether of the iTunes Store. It's a subtle yet important shift for Apple, a company long known for, ahem, control of content and media.

What this means is the previous setup, wherein a user would have to share songs via the iTunes Store and nowhere else, is gone. It's been replaced with a Ping button next to every song you own....

1st Windows Phone ads blame other phones for stop-...

Early forms of the first Windows Phone 7 ads have surfaced (video below) through a leak this morning that show how Microsoft plans to pitch its mobile OS against its rivals. The two unfinished spots accuse devices like the BlackBerry and iPhone of promoting a culture of staring at smartphones instead of dealing with life itself. Windows Phone 7's at-a-glance home screen tiles help find info faster and help focus on family and friends, the ads discovered by WMPowerUser claim....

Mac 101: Open new tabs to reveal browsing history in...

Safari's Top Sites feature is nifty and all, but what I've really wanted to do is have new Safari tabs open showing me my recent browsing history. I couldn't figure out a way to do this until just now. Maybe if you're an experienced Safari user this is obvious, but I'm still a fairly recent Safari adopter.

If you look in Safari's preferences, it will show that new tabs can be set to Top Sites, Home Page, Empty Page, Same Page, or Bookmarks. There's no "History" option. The good news is that you can work around this by choosing Bookmarks (as shown above), and then click on History (under Collections) at the top-left of the window.

Safari remembers what you had selected in the Bookmarks window, so whenever you open a new tab, it will open to the Bookmarks with the History selected. You could also do this by setting new tabs to open to an Empty Page, and then press Command+Option+2 (Show All History...

Windows Phone 7 Doesnt Support Tethering

If youre thinking of buying a Windows Phone 7 device and using it to connect your laptop to the Internet, think again. The companys new smartphones will not support tethering at all.Thats another item on the list of features (including copy and paste) tech geeks love that wont be present in the new phones. To be fair, though, the iPhone didnt officially do tethering either until very recently, but the feature is well-supported by many Android phones. The Boy Genius Report says that it heard directly from a Microsoft spokesperson, who said that the companys official statement is this: Windows Phone 7 does not support tethering.Thats going to be a dealbreaker for some hardcore techies, but most users wont know the difference. And there are plenty of features left to recommend Windows Phone 7, including Xbox Live integration, the Zune marketplace and some neat Bing Maps features.Windows Phone 7 is ready for release, so were just waiting on manufacturers to start cranking out their...

GV Mobile+, one of the third-party Google Voice apps available for the iPhone, is free right now. This deal will only last until about 1:00am EST according to the app's developer, so hurry up and save yourself three bucks. [iTunes]

Update 1: Seems that the deal's over, folks. Apparently the developer's intent was for only those who follow his public Twitter account to know about this offer and he did not appreciate it that many folks—us included—saw one of the many, many retweets and decided to share it with our readers.

Update 2: And the app's free again, it seems. The developer claims that it was just a little bit of an error with Apple's setup that caused the early price increase.

Lessons Learned from Digg: A Story of Love and Hate

I was there when it started. I was there when Digg first started chugging along. I remember it being slow, ugly, and crappy. I remember wondering why anyone would ever use something like it. And who cares if 79 other people think a story is worth my time? I browse my own news sites, thank you very much. I dont need to know what the other geeks care about boy was I ever wrong.
I kept my eyes on Digg (and its many, many competitors) over the next several years as I graduated from college, worked, then went back to school. It wasnt until I began studying online communities, however, that I really understood anything.

Recent Problems
If you spend any time on social news sites, youve already noticed the mass migration of users from Digg to Reddit. How did this happen? Where did it all begin? And is this really a bad thing for Digg (or a good thing for Reddit)? Im trying to answer these questions myself, and like all good community mixups, it just turns up more...

Ping Now Works With Your Actual iTunes Library. This...

It launched with much fanfare, but I don't think it was unreasonable to call Ping a dud out of the gate. While pretty much everyone initially signed up to try it out, a few days later, the activity stream seemed to trickle to almost nothing. And there was a good reason for that: Apple's social network for music made it very hard to share stuff -- you know, be social. But an update today makes it at least a thousand times better.

iTunes 10.0.1 released this morning brings some big Ping updates with it. Most notably, you can now use Ping with your own iTunes library. Previously, you could only share songs on Ping through the iTunes Store -- a big difference. This basically meant that even if you already owned a song, you had to hunt it down in the iTunes Store to share it. This was almost laughably tedious, and it ensured that no one would use Ping for more than a couple days.

Rumor: New 11.6 inch MacBook Air on tap for this fall

Another new device rumor has popped up, this time about a replacement for the MacBook Air. Apparently, the "old" MacBook Air isn't selling too well, so Apple is looking at refreshing the line with a smaller device equipped with an 11.6" (measured diagonally) screen.

A device of this size is beginning to encroach on dangerous territory, considering how Steve Jobs and company have made negative comments about "netbooks" in the past. AppleInsider conjectures that the power and premium price of a more svelte MacBook Air would place it more in the ultraportable category than that of a netbook.

Not only would the new MacBook Air have a smaller display to differentiate it from the existing models, but rumor has it that the device uses a partial carbon-fiber enclosure...

Trackballs were legion in the 1990s, but the input method has largely fallen out of favor in the past decade both as traditional mice gained precision and as the public swung its attention to notebooks. Griffin's Woogie turns iPhone into a plush

When I was a kid, we just played with regular stuffed animals, and then Teddy Ruxpin came along and blew us all away. But kids these days, they get all kinds of cool stuff. Like look at this thing: they can stick an iPod touch in a "huggable plush accessory" called the Woogie, and run around with it to their heart's content, watching videos, playing with apps, and, I don't know, checking the weather, or whatever else it is that kids want to do on an iPod touch.

I especially like Griffin's selling point on this one -- this case is a bonus for the kids, who get a piece of technology that's a little more fluffy and friendly than Apple's sleek designs. It's a bonus for parents too, as it's much harder to lose or seriously break the iPod when it's wrapped in the big mass of furry green tentacles.

The $20 accessory even comes with...

Introducing the iPod ninja

We here at TUAW fortunately passed on reporting the obviously fake story of Steve Jobs being denied access to Japan because of ninja stars he was reportedly carrying in his luggage. But we did like this fake Apple page from the folks at Scoopertino, featuring the iPod ninja, a brand new throwing star-shaped iPod. If Steve was carrying around ninja stars (and he wasn't), maybe he was just testing a more weaponized iPod prototype.

For more yuks, be sure to read on about the "death grip" issue ("If you hold iPod ninja in a certain way, you may require immediate medical care."), and I like the fact that sharing music with the ninja is easy -- just wing it across the room at whoever you want to listen in. StarDunk going to a free demo model

StarDunk is one of my most favorite apps recently, ever since I covered it back for Daily App a little while ago. It's an amusing little 2D basketball game, made even more impressive by the fact that it juggles online multiplayer across the world -- as you throw baskets, you're also playing in real-time against other users, and competing with various powerups and stunts for as many points as possible. The game was also notable for being one of the first titles integrated into Game Center, back when that service first arrived on the iPhone.

But the app hasn't been doing as great as it could be, according to developer Godzilab -- first, they had some issues with piracy, and now they're saying that the game's just not selling as many copies as they'd...

News: CEO Critical of Apple to Leave NBC

Jeff Zucker, CEO of NBC Universal, will be stepping down from his position once Comcast has finalized its purchase of 51% of the media company. Mr. Zucker, who has often been critical of Apple and argued at one time that Apple should have to pay media companies a portion of iPod hardware sales, told employees he would be leaving the company, and that it wasn’t his choice.

App Review: Send fantastical armies into battle with...

(i)Pawn can turn your iPhone into a board game playing surface, but what if you want to expand your battles onto a much bigger playing field, one with mages and cavalry and archangels and big monsters? Then your best option is Ex illis, a new game that uses your iPhone or iPad as a game computer (technically, the "Rule Keeper software") while you act as general and overlord and maneuver your many pawns around the board. Armed with your painted miniatures and a copy of the software (also available for your Mac or PC), you and a friend can spend the afternoon

This is a fairly light miniatures game - it's not heavy like Warhammer or 40K, but it's way beyond Risk - and the software does a find job of making sure battles are won...

Apple, Google, more agree to end anti-poaching deals

The Department of Justice today reached a settlement with several technology firms to end anti-poaching job deals between each other. Adobe, Apple, Google, Intel, Intuit and Pixar have agreed to end reportedly anti-competitive deals that prevented them from recruiting each other's staff. Companies will be required to allow "cold calls" and other active hiring attempts for at least five years and will have to institute "compliance measures" to make sure the ruling is enforced....

This Is How Much Apple Has Changed In a Decade [...

It's amazing to see how things change in a little more than a decade. Back then, Steve Jobs preached the new iMac as the center of your digital life, the internet machine. Now, the internet machine fits in your pocket.

But with sixteen times the memory, eight times the storage, and more than double its raw computational power. All in just a tiny fraction of the iMac's size and at almost half the price. It truly boggles the mind. Back then, if you told this to anyone, they would have thought you were nuttier than Mel Gibson on speed.

It's even more amazing to see how this tiny little thing has dwarfed the Mac. In 2009, Apple sold 10 million Macs—including the desktop and portables—compared to a whooping 45 million iPhones. And the 45 million is not counting the other iOS devices. Next year, the iPad alone is expected to surpass the sales of all Mac computers combined...

We just got some confirmation on our story earlier this week that FaceTime had gone missing in parts of the world, mostly around the Middle East. @dutweets is the official Twitter account for du, the telecom operator for the iPhone in the United Arab Emirates, and in a tweet just a little while ago, the account confirmed that FaceTime is currently unavailable in that country. The iPhone hasn't even officially launched there yet, but the account also says that FaceTime "won't be working as of the launch" (which takes place tomorrow), so even official customers there won't have access to the video chat feature.

Star-Struck

Last year I started an official DF Twitter account: @daringfireball. Everything I post to Daring Fireball gets posted to that Twitter account automatically. Effectively, it’s a Twitter version of the DF RSS feed.

Part of the system I wrote to auto-tweet these posts is my own URL shortener. Because it seemed fun and looked sharp, I registered the domain name ✪df.ws. How? Thanks to Internationalized Domain Names (IDN), domain names can now include Unicode glyphs. The DNS system was original conceived as ASCII-only, and IDN works around that by mapping domain names containing non-ASCII characters back to ASCII via an encoding method called Punycode. For example, the Punycode representation of “✪df.ws” is “...
