Survey: iPhone coders happier, richer than Android...

About half of all iPhone app developers are making more money than they expected, while about the same number of Android devs report making less than expected, according to a new survey conducted by IT pollsters Open-First of 110 developers for both marketplaces. A plurality of devs rated Apple's App Store as better overall than the Android Marketplace, with 78% expressing some level of satisfaction with the iOS selling experience and a whopping 99% saying they'd continue to write for the platform. However, the Android Marketplace continues to win favor due to its rap...

Acer says netbooks won't die as prices plunge...

Acer Taiwan's president Scott Lin today insisted at a press conference that netbooks would survive in the face of tablets like the iPad despite signs to the contrary. He believed the dual-core Atom N550 would keep the category going as it gave about 50 percent more performance without hiking the cost, giving users a reason to pick one over a tablet. About 40 million netbooks would ship in 2010, or about 20 percent of the entire notebook arena, Lim told Digitimes and others at the event....

Digg Has Jumped The Shark

Over time I’ve built something of a reputation as a Digg fan, both within and outside of TNW. I have long enjoyed the community that managed the site and respected the team that built it.

That said, I find myself in something of a dull torpor whenever I visit the new Digg; its vitality has been stripped, and its soul seems to have been crushed. The wonky aspects of Digg that long gave it a unique character are being buried in spam and dull stories.

Digg has always been broken, but in an odd way it used to work. No, it was not the democratic heaven that some people wanted it to be, but it was a strong content destination. That is no longer the case.

Even more, from the publisher perspective, the promise of non-episodic traffic has turned out to be something of a paper dragon. Do we get a few more hits on a day to day basis than we used to? Maybe, but the decline of traffic to Digg’s front page means that the daily crumbs don’t make up the for the massively...

Time Warner fights 99 cent rentals, too

NBC isn't the only broadcast company that's fighting Apple on 99 cent iTunes rentals. Apparently Time Warner doesn't want in on the plan, either. That's according to its CEO Jeff Bewkes, who told a conference of media executives in London that Apple is underselling television content by providing cheap rentals to customers. "How can you justify renting your first-run TV shows individually for 99 cents an episode," he asked, "and thereby jeopardize the sale of the same shows as a series to branded networks that pay hundreds of millions of dollars and make those shows available to loyal viewers for free?" The argument seems to be that if Apple offers 99 cent rentals, there's no incentive for syndication on other networks. Why would you watch cable reruns when you could load up old shows...

YouTube options, iPad multitasking animation, Game...

9to5Mac has been digging through the brand new iOS 4.2 beta, and they've found a few new features hidden in the mix. First up, the build offers some new YouTube uploading options -- you can now choose to make your uploaded YouTube videos public, unlisted, or private upon upload. Honestly, I've had hit-or-miss luck with uploading to YouTube straight from my iPhone, but it's nice to know the process is being worked on. Maybe we'll have some optimization come along with the new options.

Second, as you can see above, the iPad has gotten itself a brand new multitasking animation. Instead of just pulling up whatever app you're switching to, it'll actually spin the windows around (this functionality is already up and running on the iPhone, but now it'll be available on the iPad as well). Sometimes litigation comes in handy.

Per CNET, a number of users who discovered that their 2007 and 2008 MacBook Pro systems contained graphics problems that showed either scrambled video output or sometimes black screens are in for some compensation.

Users who have MacBook Pro systems manufactured between 2007 and 2008 and who are experiencing video problems (black or scrambled output) will be eligible to have their systems fixed for free. Reimbursements will be paid to people who have had these problems fixed at their own expense.

If you feel you are entitled to the benefits of this settlement, you can register to have your system fixed at the Nvidia GPU Litigation Web site. The site...

iFixit: Apple TV has 8GB of onboard flash storage

One of the big questions concerning whether or not the new Apple TV will be able to run apps of some sort is "how much onboard RAM does it have?"

That question has been answered by the guys at iFixit, who as usual, have been the first to tear apart and document the internal workings of the Apple TV. The answer: 8GB of NAND flash RAM made by Samsung. The iFixit team speculates that the RAM is most likely going to be used to cache incoming video streams, but it might also be used to temporarily hold apps that could run under iOS on the device.

More interesting news about the Apple TV is bound to come out in the next couple of days; stay tuned to TUAW for all of your Apple TV coverage.

Correction to original post: that's 8GB of onboard flash storage, 256MB of actual RAM. We apologize for the error.

Queuing and downloading in the App Store

Here's a great idea from Ryan Cash to put iOS apps unavailable for immediate download into a queue that will automatically resume when they become available.

Ryan notes that he often buys iOS apps when he's out and about, whether it be on the recommendation of a friend, riding in a car, etc. The problem is that many of the target apps are over the 20MB 3G limit. I've experienced this myself, as well as the inevitable conclusion: I forget to try again once I'm within range of a Wi-Fi network, and the app's author has lost that sale.

Ryan suggests an "add to queue" option to accompany or follow the notification at right, which would put that download into a holding pattern until the iPhone found a Wi-Fi network. That way, the download would resume, we'd get that cool app we were motivated to buy earlier, and the author will get the sale.

Additionally, Ryan suggests that a queue...

Apple to create new HTML5 content for website

Apple has published a new job posting for a Creative Technology Manager, tasked in part with creating new HTML5 content at Apple.com, with support for iOS devices.

The listing seeks an individual who "...will be responsible for driving web-standard (HTML5) innovation that enhances and redefines the marketing of Apple's products and services to millions of consumers. Work will also include exploring opportunities with apple.com, email and mobile/multi-touch experiences on the iPhone and iPad."

Of course, HTML5-powered content has already begun to appear on Apple's website. Recently, a movie showtimes page has appeared that lets users find location-based movie showings, view theater locations on a map, and view trailers. I've added it to my iPhone's home screen as it's so useful.

Also, Apple...

The 7 Dodgy Sales Guys That Ruin Electronics Stores...

In general, electronics salesmen hold a respectable place in the salesmen hierarchy. Generally speaking, of course. That doesn’t mean there aren’t bad apples. And by bad apples we mean rotten, maggot-infested shriveled skin-hanging-to-cores that resemble nothing of the sweet, luscious fruit we know and love as apple. We’re using guys to cut down on pronouns, but don’t worry gals, you can suck this bad just as well as the gents.

iPad may get a visit from the content-streaming fairy

A peek under the new Apple TV's skirt has afforded TUAW a glimpse of some extra fancy firmware garters. As it turns out, users may eventually be able to have the Apple TV experience on an iPad, enabling them to stream content from the Apple Store and to start videos on one device but finish them on another.

We've known for some time that the Apple TV would be iOS-based, creating the expectation that the Apple TV would then be able to run apps and imitate the iPad in some ways. But some features of the Apple TV's interface indicate that its functionality is also intended...

Why I Still Want a Desktop Computer

Being able to work wherever, whenever, untethered by cables is great. To write a blog post in a park or share photos from the beach is one of the most convenient and enjoyable things technology has allowed us to do. People move around a lot these days, and the laptop just makes sense. Yet, though you might call me crazy, for my main, day-to-day computer, I still want a desktop computer. While admittedly, I wouldn’t only want a desktop, I still don’t want to live without one.

Tim Cook rumors affect Apple, HP stock

Late yesterday morning, a rumor hit the the Internet suggesting that Apple's COO Tim Cook was going to leave the company to become HP's CEO. As a result, Apple's stock took a dip while HP's showed a sudden spike.

In morning trading, Apple's stock fell nearly US$17 (or 5%), while HP's rose by more than $0.40 (over 1%). Clearly, investors like Tim Cook, and they saw his rumored departure as detrimental to Apple and a win for HP. Fortunately for Cupertino, it's not true.

Cook quickly denied the rumor, saying that he "...loves Apple" and is not going to HP. In January of this year, there was a rumor that Cook would become the CEO of GM, which also turned out to be false...

Apple's Q4 earnings call will take place Oct. 18

Can Apple continue the string of unprecedented financial success? Will the 4th quarter of 2010 (ending tomorrow, September 30th) be even more successful than the 3rd quarter, now that the iPad has had time to dominate the market for three more months, and the iPhone 4 has overcome the negative "grip of death" publicity?

We'll all find out on October 18th, when Tim Cook, Steve Jobs, and a rogue's gallery of tech analysts bring us the 4th quarter earnings call for Apple Inc. As usual, TUAW will be providing a liveblog of the event, complete with commentary by our staff of bloggers.
