Macworld Mobile to orbit App Planet at MWC 2011 in...

The Mobile World Congress, a huge mobile-oriented conference convening in February in Barcelona, Spain, has been dominated by the iPhone over the last several years. However, there has never been a formal presence by Apple or many major players in the iPhone ecosphere at the event. That's going to change in February of 2011 when the first Macworld Mobile will be held at MWC to showcase iOS developers.

As with the annual Macworld Expo event in San Francisco, Macworld Mobile is organized by IDG World Expo, which is partnering with the MWC parent organization (GSMA) to bring the event to Barcelona. As with Macworld, Apple does not plan on participating in Macworld Mobile. The event is scheduled for February 14-17, 2011 and offers a developer track with a number of technical sessions.

iLife '11 Shows Up Early on Amazon For $99 [...

Rumors of Apple's next iLife release have abounded for a few months now, but it looks like Amazon's lifted the veil: a product listing indicates that an iLife '11 Family Pack will be available in 2-4 weeks for $99.

There hasn't been a new iLife since January 2009, making it more than overdue for an update. The Amazon product listing, which was discovered by TUAW and has since been pulled from the online retailer, had apparently gone unnoticed since it first went up on July 27th.

While there have previously been iLife '11 books offered online, those don't amount to much more than...

From the good folks who make the power-in-a-pinch HyperMac batteries, the HyperDrive is a hard drive that connects directly to your iPad. It has a touch screen, can read 12 types of memory cards, and has capacities reaching 750GB.

The HyperDrive overcomes the Camera Connection Kit's 32GB limit by arranging folders into separate, iPad-readable 32GB drives, allowing users to store up to 750GB of photos and video on the go and transfer them to the iPad as needed. A 3.2" color touchscreen lets users pick the desired files, and it also displays JPEG and RAW images. When not connected to an iPad, it functions as a standard USB external hard drive.

The HyperDrive also serves as a memory card backup device, reading 12 popular formats, including Compact Flash, SD, SDHC, and the rest, with two card readers. There's a whole range of sizes,...

New volume control behavior in iTunes 10

In iTunes 10, if you select multiple speakers with the new AirPlay feature iTunes will allow you to fine tune the output volume of each speaker.
Previously, sharing to an Airport Express resulted in both outputs being tied directly to the current volume that iTunes was set to use. Set the output to 100% and all speakers would be set to 100%. Move it to 50% and all the speakers will move to 50%.

The new controller has a 'master volume' bar. The highest volume determines the 'master volume'. If the highest volume slider is at 80% then the master volume slider sets itself to 80%. Any change to either the master volume or the highest volume directly correlates to the other. If the highest volume (V1) dips below another volume level (V2) the master volume binds itself to the new highest volume level (V2). This can only happen if the highest volume level is adjusted directly, and not as a result of adjusting the master volume.

High contrast mode in iTunes 10

If you are struggling with the new low-contrast icons in iTunes 10, here is a hint to change the appearance.

In the terminal enter:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes high-contrast-mode-enable -bool TRUE

This will give a high-contrast side bar and listing pane. To undo this repeat the command but change the TRUE to FALSE. I haven't managed to get the color icons back yet though.

The preference AppleAquaColorVariant is next in the list after high-contrast-mode-enable and also does something, unfortunately every value I've tried so far prevents iTunes from launching. If you want to experiment, you can remove it to fix iTunes with:

defaults delete com.apple.iTunes AppleAquaColorVariant

[crarko adds: I tried this, and what it does is go from black on white to white on black. That certainly is higher contrast but I don't...

Keep fixed window positions in Spaces

If you're a frequent user of Spaces, you'll often find yourself moving windows between spaces, however, if you like to have your large windows properly centered (e.g. in Safari or other browsers) you'll find it difficult to properly center the window when moving between spaces, leaving part of the window off-screen, and needing to be adjusted.

The solution is simple, all you have to do is enter Exposé from the spaces overview, and then move the windows between spaces. Once you exit Exposé, you'll find the window will be in the exact same location on the screen it was in the previous space.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described. On my MacBook I just used the default keyboard settings of F8 to get into the Spaces overview, and then F9 to bring up Exposé in 'All windows' mode. If you've changed those key bindings, use your correct ones, or you could combine the two using...

Neal Stephenson's Mongoliad project has launched -- you can go browse the website right now and read through the offerings available. As Cory Doctorow posts, the project is a series of episodic stories and materials portraying a universe put together by Stephenson and a few other author friends. The idea seems to be that you pay a subscription fee ($5.99 for six months, or $9.99 for a year), and then get access to whatever fiction content is being posted at that time, as well as a giant online Wikipedia-style database of the universe's background. There's not much about the story itself, but Doctorow calls it "epic, a swashbuckling swordplay novel with the sweep, charm and verve of the major Stephenson epics, such as...

TUAW's Daily App: Texto SMS Favorites

There are a lot of weird texting applications for the iPhone, and some of them are pretty hinky in terms of design or function. But Texto is probably the best looking SMS app I've seen -- it doesn't do any weird non-SMS text messaging or have all kinds of neon graphics running around. All it does is hook up with your iPhone's standard texting service to let you get quick shortcuts to your most commonly used people and messages. Thanks to LA traffic, I'm often running just a little late for meetings, and with Texto, I can just tap a few buttons to send an "I'll be there soon" to my friends and colleagues rather than trying to type the whole thing out as I frantically drive across town.

The app's only 99 cents, but I'll admit it's not for everybody. If you don't text a whole lot already, you probably don't need a whole other app to handle your most...

Greg's bite: my thoughts on the Apple TV

By Greg Mills

In preparing this article, I have come to view Apple TV/Netflix as not a replacement for Dish but as a cheap "pay for view" movie channel option to replace a satellite channel I am currently subscribed to.

I am going to drop one movie channel (US$12 a month) to pay for a subscription to NetFlix ($8.99 + $2.00 for HD). That revelation allowed me to make a personal decision to go ahead and buy the Apple TV device and subscribe to NetFlix. Here is my take on this.

iPod Touch Said to Account for 38% of All iOS...

Last week Steve Jobs patted Apple on the back and announced that 120 million iOS devices have now been sold, but according to market research company Asymco, the iPod Touch accounts for 38 per cent of that figure.

How did Asymco arrive at that figure? It's guesswork, but they subracted the 59.6 million iPhones sold up to the end of the month of June (known because of SEC filings), and the 3.2 million iPads sold. They then figured that around 8 million iPhones and 4 million iPads were sold by Apple between July and August, resulting in 45.2 million unexplained iOS sales—which have been...

Australia To Fight iPod Use By Pedestrians

Kilrah_il writes "In recent years the number of people killed on roads in New South Wales, Australia has dropped, but strangely enough, the number of pedestrians killed has risen. Some think it's because of the use of iPods and other music players making people not attentive to road dangers (the so-called 'iPod Zombie Trance'). Based on this (unproven) assumption, the Pedestrian Council has started a campaign in an effort to educate the people, but apparently it isn't enough. Now, some are pushing for the government to enact laws to help eradicate the problem. 'The government is quite happy to legislate that people can lose two demerit points for having music up too loud in their cars, but is apparently unconcerned that listening devices now appear to have become lethal pieces of entertainment,' [Harold Scruby of the Pedestrian Council of Australia] said. 'They should legislate appropriate penalties for people acting so carelessly towards their own welfare and that of others. ......

Five Hacks to Give Your Old iPod a New Life [Hacks]

After last week's Apple announcements, your previous-gen iPod probably isn't looking so hot. Cheer up! We've got five mods that'll breathe new life into the little guy, so you don't have to feel guilty about picking up a shiny replacement.

1. Turn it into an audiophile's dream

You might think your iPod already sounds good—if you aren't using crappy earbuds—but most audiophiles would turn up their noses up at the sight of it. Fix that with Red Wine Audio's iMod, which replaces some of the guts of your disparaged 5/5.5 generation iPod with hifi-caliber parts. The trick behind the mod is replacing the circuitry that leads to your headphone jack, which the team at Red Wine Audio claim degrades the signal. With new parts in place, you'll enjoy untainted sound—though you'll need to connect the modded iPod to an amplifier to...

Over the weekend, we noticed Craiglist had replaced a certain notorious section of its site with a black bar reading censored.A longtime and well-known digital resource for prostitutes and the people who engage their services, Craigslist has come under fire many times over the past few years for its erotic/adult classified ads. Craigslist has stated it does everything it can to comply with government and legal stipulations and has an attorney manually screen all of its Adult Services ads. The company once said that 700,000 ads were manually rejected in just one year.Still, this hasnt stopped sex trafficking on the site, nor has it stopped the site from coming under harsh criticism for its business. In a recent poll, we asked if you thought Craigslists Adult Services section should be censored. Here are the results. Our readers are surprisingly liberal-minded about the Adult Services section. The vast majority of you (71.37%) said you thought the site should not be censored for a...

Apple photoshops iPhone into iPod touch

The careful readers at Engadget have noticed that Apple cut a few corners (so to speak) on its website documentation for the latest iPod touch. There's no ear speaker or phone service on the device, obviously, but nevertheless Apple's iPod touch display units show that the Phone app is still sitting down there in the lower left corner. Searching in Spotlight, according to another screenshot, will bring up the text messaging app, and there's one more little mistake (look in the Travel folder to see if you can spot it).

Apple has since updated the images on its website, but it's good to know that not even Apple's copywriters get their hands on the devices before we do. They apparently have to Photoshop it all together, and then preorder and wait for their devices just like us common folk.

iPhone 4 case turns your iPhone into an audio tape

I just went through the case program for my brand new iPhone 4, but I'm still poking around to see if there's one worth buying that I might also pick up in addition to the free one. Like, for example, this awesome audio cassette case from a company called Fred and Friends. It looks like an old plastic audiocassette, but it's actually made of silicone, and it even comes with a little tape box (oh man, I had so many of those back in the day) that flips around into a video stand.

Very, very cool. It's not available yet, but the case is supposed to ship in October for US$20. Yes, if you have an iPhone 4, you've already got a free case from Apple, but man, something this cool might just be worth the extra money anyway....

Unofficial iPhone launch dates for Korea, Taiwan

At long last, we have (unofficial) launch dates for the iPhone 4 in Korea and Taiwan.

In Korea, pre-orders began last month despite the lack of an official launch date. According to MacNN, distributor KT Corporation has announced that the iPhone 4 will hit store shelves on September 10th. KT's official site is a bit confusing, though; a news post says "October" in the headline and simply "September" in the body of the post. But that could be a translation error.

Meanwhile, Taiwan channels are reporting that the iPhone 4 will go on sale in that country on September 15th. Demand has been huge in Taiwan, where eager customers have reportedly placed 150,000 pre-orders since August.

We'll let you know when we hear anything...

MIT app turns your Android phone into a...

Oh, sure -- a few people have called Google's Nexus One a "superphone," but suddenly, that nickname has taken on a whole new level of meaning. A team of talent from MIT has put its head down in order to concoct a new Android application that can come darn close to solving complex computational problems in just a fraction of the time that it'd take a bona fide supercomputer. The goal here is to let researchers and scientists convert to Google's mobile OS, but if you aren't falling for that one, it's also designed to "let engineers perform complicated calculations in the field, and to better control systems for vehicles or robotic systems." Of course, the models that are hosted on the phone do require a supercomputer to create, but once certain formulas are embedded, the app can then compute approximations in mere seconds rather than hours. Best of all, rbAPPmit is available for download as well speak in the source link below, but we'd probably wait for the (presumably thick) user...

Pro Australian photogs have a go at the iPhone camera

There's no question that photography with the iPhone is really catching on. Now, with iPhone 4, the camera quality is up, and people seem to be using it more and more for pictures they want to keep instead of casual snaps.

A pro group of photographers, the ACMP (Australian Commercial and Media Photographers) ran a competition soliciting photos taken with an iPhone. The requirement was that the entrants use the Hipstamatic app to acquire the images, and that no further image manipulation could be applied. Hipstamatic emulates old styles of analog photography, along with classic lens emulations and different film characteristics. The app is US $1.99.

The results are interesting and artistic. I've put a couple of the winners in a gallery, and I've provided a link so that you can see all the entries...

Cool mod: iPhone as digital microscope

Here's a great and super-simple mod that turns an iPhone 4 into a portable digital microscope. Using an inexpensive microscope found on Amazon (seven bucks as of this writing), an iPhone case and some superglue, this user has hacked together a stable, portable digital microscope that also takes pictures.

The iPhone's flat back makes attaching the microscope super easy. After getting it glued to the case, simply snap it onto the iPhone and start observing things close up! For bonus points, pair the iPhone with BlueCam for iPad, which feeds an iPhone 4's live video stream to an iPad via Bluetooth for big-screen observations.

Fake.app makes powerful Web automation easy

Todd Ditchendorf (Celestial Teapot Software) is probably best known for creating Fluid, a Site-Specific Browser app that we love to talk about. While Fluid was a great and well-executed idea, Todd's latest app, Fake, is truly inspired. The easiest way to describe Fake is to say it's Automator for the Web. It may not have the mass appeal that Fluid does, but its target audience (Web designers and developers, as well as Web power users) will have no trouble appreciating its capabilities.

Fake, like Automator, offers an Actions library and allows you to create drag-and-drop workflows with Web-specific capabilities. Fill a form, click a button, follow links ... basically, you can automate anything that deals with...

TUAW's Daily App: TiltShift Generator Free

I finally picked up an iPhone 4 last Friday, and one of the best things about the new handset is the beautiful shots I've taken with the camera. I'm not a professional photographer by any stretch, and people who have actually done tilt-shift photography might have a whole lot of bones to pick with the "'shopped" version of the technique, but I've already had plenty of enjoyment from TiltShift Generator Free. It's one of a few apps on the store that will edit taken pictures to give them the short depth of field and selective focus that creates the effect. The aptly named TiltShift and Tilt Shift Focus are two other (slightly more...

Over the past few days, Apple’s iOS 4.1 update has gone from “coming soon” to “gold master”. Per The Unofficial Apple Weblog, user report have stated that the update resolves iOS 4.0.2′s stuttering, crashing, and generalized slowness on the iPhone 3G handset and offers better overall performance.

Specific improvements included speed, performance via the Maps app and much faster Spotlight search on the iPhone 3G wherein the app no longer searches through text messages.

Individual mileage may vary, but the iOS 4.1 update could be worth looking forward to once it’s released later this week.

Is Android Only Surging Because Apple Is Letting It?

This weekend, I've been catching up on some reading. One post that was of particular interest to me was David Beach's article from last week about developing for Android. Beach, who is a product manager at eBay Mobile and a co-founder of 12seconds, basically says that the experience sucks for a number of reasons (all of which Google can fix, but will take quite a bit of work and time). But one quote in particular stuck out to me:
Android has succeeded despite Google. In fact it's safe to say that Android is successful for one primary reason. The iPhone is only available on AT&T. If the iPhone was on Verizon a year ago. Android would be no where near as popular.
Obviously, Beach isn't the first person to bring this idea up. But he brings it up in a way that he's able to back-up his feelings from a developers' perspective, while at the same time roping in what isn't ideal from a consumer perspective about Android as well.

Mac 101: Use Preview to display a slideshow (update)

Over the weekend I went to visit some relatives I haven't seen for some time. As is required by such family gatherings, I brought a large number of photographs to share with them.

I planned to show the photographs on my MacBook, which has recently been refurbished, but hasn't had iPhoto reinstalled on it. Running late, I didn't have time to install it as planned. As a last resort, I thought I'd just show the photos using Quick Look and scroll through them in full screen.

When I eventually got round to showing off my photos (you know, that rather drowsy time just after dinner), I realized that Quick Look won't let you scroll through items when in full screen, let alone do a slideshow (which would be pretty useful). However, you can resize the Quick Look window to almost full screen.

Well, to say the least, with hundreds of photos to get through, people already getting bored, my finger hurting from scrolling and...

Samsung suggests Galaxy Tab will cost between $200...

Early reports indicate Europe will pay a pretty penny for Samsung's Galaxy Tab, but the 7-inch tablet may cost a good bit less when it comes to US shores -- the Wall Street Journal paraphrases a Samsung executive who claims it could run between $200 and $300 depending on the all-important carrier subsidies. The Korea Times, meanwhile, suggests a $300 to $400 retail price according to a different Samsung bigwig, who added that the Tab "will cost slightly more than the Galaxy S smartphone." As you're probably aware, Sammy's Galaxy S typically retails for about $200 in the US -- excepting Sprint's Epic 4G at $250 -- so if you held a bursting Li-ion battery to our head and forced us to guess, we'd say the latter range of dollar signs is far more likely.

By the way, Vodafone UK shows the Galaxy Tab as "coming soon." Hit our more coverage link for details.

Apple already has his payment information from the get go, and the creator of each app can use Apples billing system for in-app purchases.Thats one of the reasons Wales believes app stores could be beneficial for the news industry. Android accounts for one-quarter of mobile web...

It's terribly difficult to get reliable statistics, as numbers tend to vary drastically depending upon whom you ask, but if you're inclined to believe that Android is mopping up Apple and RIM's declining mobile mindshare in the US, you'll find nothing but corroboration from Quantcast. The analytics firm reckons a full one-quarter of mobile web traffic stateside comes from devices running Google's OS, though it's important to know that the iOS tallies apparently don't include the web-friendly iPad. You also might want to note that this is mobile web traffic here -- these days, we spend an increasing amount of our internet time in apps -- and since we're on a roll with the disclaimers, let's just add that these numbers have nothing to do with a company's financial success. Nokia can attest to that.Android accounts for one-quarter of mobile web traffic, says Quantcast originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 04 Sep 2010 19:02:00 EDT. The U.S. site continues to say "Coming Soon," but we'll assume that rather than making two mistakes (posting a date, and posting a wrong date) that the Sept. 8 is correct. It also makes sense since the new iPod touches will ship on Sept.
