HTML Index Generator is a simple program, but very handy if you're trying to organise GIF and JPG files for your Web site. The program scans any directory you nominate, and presents any GIF and/or JPG files as thumbnails. You cannot save any indexes, however, they are quickly generated, and the thumbnails are a good viewable size. Click on a filename if you want to see the file full size.

This program gives you an intelligent way of managing information on your computer, no matter where the information comes from. You can store documents, notes, Internet references, e-mail, and more -- whatever you want to be able to retrieve quickly and easily. The most valuable feature of the program is Auto-Clip. This feature automatically stores anything you copy to the clipboard in the program's In Tray in separate notes; you can collect a mass of information from the Internet or any other source, then file the information later. Although you can conduct a full text search, a faster way to locate items is to add keywords to the material that you store. The program's interface is wonderful: you're given "home pages", which are graphical representations of a typical office. You can store your information in books, filing cabinets, on shelves in your home page -- just as you'd store information in a physical office.

Jot98 is a clever replacement for Windows Notepad. The primary enhancement is the ability to load files of up to a megabyte in size. Other features include an integrated spell-checker, a right-mouse pop-up menu, variable colour schemes, date/time stamps, autoload a Jot file, open any file type, and a status bar with date, time and help information. The program uses an Office 97-style toolbar.

HyperMedia Lite is a document management system designed for small companies and professionals that need to be able to organise and retrieve masses of documents. The documents may be projects, photographic archives, correspondence, advertising material, accounting records -- anything that needs to be stored and retrieved at a command. The best features of the system are that it operates similarly to a World Wide Web browser, so it's a familiar interface, and also that it allows you to define and link your documents interactively as you work. The Lite version comes with a manual of over a hundred pages: it completely describes the system so that you're aware of all its features, and gets you started on creating your own information archives.

Web Writer 98 is an HTML editor that functions much like WordPad, except that it inserts HTML code. It's very handy for creating additions or alterations to your Web pages on-the-fly. Features include: toolbars for single-button HTML tag insertion, automatic HTML colour syntaxing, as well as unlimited undo/redo functions.

This program contains everything that you need to create your Web site. Included with the program is a project manager, HTML editor, thumbnails browser, clickable image map creator, an FTP client and much more. An excellent feature of Alchemica Webworks is that it's completely graphical: you can see exactly where you are in your work at any time -- this is an immense benefit to keep track of tasks related to your site. However, the main benefit of the program is that you can create a single project and simultaneously publish it to a World Wide Web server, an Intranet server, a CD-ROM or an HTML help application. In other words, rather than focusing on any single element of a Web site or similar project, Alchemica Webworks gives you a complete overview and allows you to pull elements from many places together into a new project.

Easy Mail is a clever utility that lets you create and print envelopes, labels, notes, memos and letters without loading your word processor and tinkering with dozens of settings. The program comes configured with all the usual letter and label sizes, so all you need do is tell it how you load envelopes into your printer, then enter your own address and the recipient's address on the displayed envelope. When you've entered the details on the envelope, press the "letter" button, and the program will load its own word processor, with the date and inside address inserted. The program even includes a database into which you can enter your contacts.

Slim Show simplifies making presentations. In fact, it creates them for you almost automatically. Rather than looking all over your disks for the elements to make up the presentation -- text, sound, movies, graphics -- you can add them with a simple drag-and-drop operation. When you're done, you can either run the presentation in Slim Show, or you can make the presentation distributable with the multimedia engine that is included with the program. The presentation player is very compact, so you can run it easily from your laptop, even if your presentation contains text-to-speech synthesisations. However, you should be aware that you do need other applications to create the text, graphics and sounds etc, that you'll be adding to your presentations; these facilities are not provided in Slim Show.
