Windows 95

INSTAbase is a simple way to create as many flat file databases as you wish. A Master database is provided for you; from then on you can create your own. You enter fields and data within established frames, and can add pictures and graphics to any field. The program recognises Internet URLs and e-mail addresses, interfacing with your default browser and e-mail program. You can add large blocks of text in the memo field, and click to expand the field to full screen mode -- and you can click and search on any field.

This program is a PIM (personal information manager), but it's a lot simpler and more intuitive than other such programs because it has a familiar Explorer-like interface. Tasks, notes and appointments can be added into a hierarchical tree, and the screen is divided into three areas -- a tree-view of . the database, records in selected folders, and an area to enter records. Multisoft Affairs can be easily integrated with Microsoft Office. Click on 'MS Excel Spreadsheet' on the View menu, and the database opens in an Excel spreadsheet.

Yeah Write is a brilliant program which combines the functions of a word processor, a database and a PIM. Instead of starting with a document as a blank, unformatted, unsaved file, you begin with a pre-formatted template. The databases are tabbed along the top of the screen. Selecting a tab (really a folder) selects from a number of templates, including: General, Journal, Letters, Memos, Notes etc. You can create new tabs (folders) as you need them, as well as sub-tabs/folders. The program is crammed with additional features, such as spell checkers in several languages, an option to create new tabs, as well as complete new databases ("drawers"), backup and restore, Internet features, and much more.

Find out the exact age of a past event (anniversary, birthday etc), or calculate the number of days to a forthcoming event (year 2000, your next birthday or an upcoming holiday) in years, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds. The program bases its calculations on your system clock and they are continually updated.

Motivator Pro doesn't simply provide a space for you to set your goals, it includes a Success Coach, which leads you through the goal-setting process. This starts with defining your own Success Creed — what success means to you. You can password-protect your work, so you can be totally honest. Next, the coach will help you to define your Objectives. You can create as many or as few Objectives as you wish. To inspire you, you can import pictures representing your Objectives into the program -- these may be photos of your next holiday destination, or of the car that you're saving up for. The next step in the process is to set your goals, which will lead you to your objectives.

FaxMail is an innovative program that features many capabilities you won't find elsewhere. Its best feature is that it totally integrates itself into the Windows environment. When it is active, it appends itself to system menus, and you'll see the FaxMail icon in the titlebar of whatever programs you're running. This means that you can send any document as a fax at any time: FaxMail converts the current document to a fax format, you select the recipient's name from a FaxBook (address manager), and FaxMail transmits the document. If you're away from your computer, you can still receive them -- print, view or store them when you're available. FaxMail also features a unique system that manages the faxes you send and receive.

In addition to a diagnostics utility which helps you configure your com port and modem, a tutorial and a 75-page manual is included.

It's Time is a clever, easy to use reminder list. It stores unlimited reminders, and you can set the precise time you want to be notified. If you change your mind, you can set it to remind you again within any time span -- minutes, hours or weeks. The program also allows you to set recurring reminders, again any time frame that makes sense to you.

Step 1: Install Win32s version 1.3 (from ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Mosaic/Windows/Win31x/Win32s/ole32s13.exe).

Step 2: From File Manager, choose File, Associate.

Step 3: Type hlp in the 'Files with Extension:' box.

Step 4: Type c:\windows\system\winhlp32.exe in the 'Associate With:' box and click OK.

Step 5: Now double-clicking on a file with extension HLP will give you the full 32-bit bag of help tricks.

Windows NT 4.0

Note that NT won't recognise the scanner if it's not powered on before the operating system loads. Also, DeskScan doesn't support the 5p's green front-panel Scan button.

HP's 16-bit PaperPort image management and OCR software is happy in Windows 3.1x, 95 or NT, and you can re-install it in the same folder for dual-boot systems. If you're using Office 97, you can add PaperPort links for Word and Excel by downloading sj104en.exe from either of the above Net sites, and installing the two files held in the archive.

DOS

Note: DOS Program are best run from the DOS prompt. We have included links to run these programs whenever possible; however they may not behave well under Windows. If you experience problems, exit or restart in DOS mode and try from there using the path detailed below

Boxer is a DOS text editor, and supports the editing of multiple text files in multiple windows. The windows can be of any size, and can occupy various positions on the screen. Although Boxer was written as a text editor for programmers, it's a useful tool for anyone, especially if you have an older machine, or if you use a notebook PC. The program offers lots of options, including macros, and comes with a lengthy manual if you want to explore its complete features.
