Lock into the most secure way to interact with the Internet

The Web is getting a lot more useful now that you can use it to conduct transactions and exchange information via interactive applications. But the new capabilities can be scary, too, unless you're using a browser that has security features built in to protect your finances, confidentiality, and the files on your computer. The Platform Preview of Internet Explorer 4.0 meets the challenge with tough security features and support for the latest Internet security standards to ensure that your communications are private and cannot be intercepted.

Microsoft's new browser also helps protect your computer from virus-infected software, giving you control over which programs can be downloaded and have access to your computer. And to ensure your privacy and protect your identity over the Internet, Internet Explorer 4.0 lets you set up your own secure personal certificate to make sure no one else can assume your identity when accessing sites or services.

The Platform Preview of Internet Explorer 4.0 includes all of the security fixes recently introduced with Internet Explorer 3.02. For the latest information about security issues related to Microsoft products, see the Security Advisor Web site. Your security is a top priority at Microsoft, and we are committed to resolving any such issues quickly and thoroughly.

How does it work?

Internet Explorer 4.0 includes the following security features:

  • Security Options. Features that give you control over which programs are downloaded onto your computer.
  • Secure communications. Internet Explorer 4.0 supports the latest Internet security standards to block anyone from eavesdropping on your electronic communications.
  • Microsoft Wallet. The browser includes a "virtual" wallet where you can securely store personal information such as credit card numbers, Digital Certificates, and Digital Keys.
  • Authenticode technology. Online certificates help you decide whether to download a piece of software by identifying who published it and certifying that it hasn't been tampered with.
  • Enhanced "Sandbox" support. By controlling whether Java applications can access your computer's resources, you can take advantage of the power of Java and still protect your system.
