Don't Save Browser-Safe Colors in 16-bit!

Unexpected problems occur when working with browser safe color. Sometimes browser safe colors that you thought you set up properly turn out to not be browser safe when you checked on them later. What might have happened?

One of the main reasons might have something to do with your computer's current bit depth. When you select browser safe color in thousands of colors the colors are no longer browser safe! For some unknown reason, browser safe colors aren't represented by thousands of colors systems. The only solution to this problem is to work in 256 colors or millions while selecting and saving with browser safe color.

You might be wondering if the 216 browser safe colors don't work properly in thousands of colors, then do you have a new set of headaches for your users viewing your site in thousands of colors (16-bit) mode, but fortunately that is not the case. The 65,000 colors (16 bit) has enough colors so that the subtle dithering is virtualy undetectable.

However, if you create your browser safe artwork with your computer set to thousands of colors (16-bit), and the resulting non-browser safe artwork is viewed in a 256 color environment, the dithering is very noticable. The moral of this warning is, make sure your authoring system is set to 256 or millions of colors when creating browser-safe artwork. I cannot explain technically why this is happening, but this solution will always work.
