Archaeologists working in eastern Syria have discovered Byzantine mosaic rock carved with what looks like a figure of Jesus. The mosaic was found in Tartus on Syria's Mediterranean coast, 295 km (160 mi) northwest of Damascus. During the Crusader period Tartus was famous for its chapel devoted to the Virgin Mary and was a popular Christian pilgrimage site. The mosaic is believed to be from the floor of a church.
