A wave of fires, usually started by hunters and honey-seekers, is destroying hundreds of hectares of pristine wilderness on the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro. The fires, which usually go unnoticed or unreported, have prompted the Tanzanian government to establish a National Trust Fund to promote research into the fires and fire prevention strategies. A secret ballot has been held in local villages to identify the culprits behind the latest wave, and 22 names have been compiled. The problem has been linked to the population of 10,000 squatters living in the forest, mostly casual labourers and their families.

Major bomb blasts occurred outside the United States Embassies in Nairobi and Dar Es Salaam on 7 August, causing extensive damage and many deaths and casualties. At this stage, the risk of a repeat blast appears low and travellers do not need to alter their plans.
