I'd like to spend about one month somewhere interesting
(and cheap) learning French. It needs to be someplace safe
for a woman travelling alone. I've travelled through Asia,
but I don't know the first thing about Africa. Where is a
good place - a city where I could stay, hire a tutor, be
immersed in the language (I assume it will be somewhere in
North Africa), and take a few two or three day trips? I'll
be travelling in September / October.
Thanks for any advice -

We plan to be in Kenya & Zanzibar in Oct and Nov. How is
the weather at this time? In Kenya we will be mostly in the
game parks & in Zanzibar the focus will be beach and
diving. I know this is the 'short rains' season but is it a
good time to travel? Thanks for any feedback...

I am thinking of going to Africa with the Peace Corps next
year and would also like to travel as much as possible
around Africa and into Asia. Would it be necessary/useful
to get a water purifier/pump? I am planning a backpacking
trip in Oregon this weekend and there's a PUR pump on sale
at REI but mostly i am thinking ahead to my future
travels... How do people deal with drinking water when
travelling in the third world?

I'm a fun and friendly guy looking to join up with someone
driving through Namibia and Botswana and share costs, pref.
leaving asap. I'm in cape town right now, but can get to
other locations to leave from if necessary. I'd go with an

flexibility if we find a place we like and would want to
stay longer, etc. I have camping and cooking equipment.
Please email me at africa-al@angelfire.com if you're

they have additional taxes that you have to pay and
therefore your stay gets a whole lot more expensive than

`Does anyone travel by boat anymore, im planning to go down the red sea from Suez. I want to get as far as India. I know that there are ferrys and other ships that go from suez to Jedda in Saudi Arabia and Port Sudan in Sudan. and that from there some travel on to Dubai and Karachi in Pakistan.
Has anyone out there travelled this way or does anyone know if there are many travelling this way. If so can you get boats straight from Egypt to India.Do you need visas for all stops on route or can you get access at the port, ie in Jedda. What are the prices to travel on these boats and how safe are they.
What would you say are the chances of arriving at a port and try to hitch a ride soouthwards on the red sea, would you need visas to enter countries on the coast, are these places dangerous.
have you any advice on this

Has anyone travelling through Africa had any experiences

watching healers, marabouts or other men of knowledge, or
seeing rituals/ceremonies connected with hunting,

Western Africa, although any such stories would be great.
Thanks and happy travelling - I'm homebound with our new

Dear Lonelyplaneters, I've been away for some days.
Back I am and..
RAINS SEEMS TO BE OVER IN TZ.
Now a few infos:
1) When in Arusha, come to see me or go to TTB (Boma Rd)
for infos. Take a lot of care of people you meet on the
road, at the bus stop, at the Shuttle attival and so on.
Some of them are good, but it's plenty of conmen. How can
you discern? If you want to run the risk, try to avoid
negotiation in the late afternoon or on Sunday. Be
absolutely sure that they'll give you a car belongin to
them, not to a friend of a friend. Use all the tricks that
you know in order do uncover the plot. If they're honest
they'll not take offence of your request.
2) Lariam&Co. Make a test with one lariam before leaving.
If you don't have side effects, go ahead. If you have, take
paludrine or don't take anything and buy a bos of Artenenam
or Cotecxin for treating the bloody malaria.
3) Arusha To Zanzibar or DSM: Precisio Air daily
(precision@cybernet.co.tz) or Air Tanzania (daily).
4) Nbi to Arusha : Shutlle bus from TNT, Davanu, Riverside
and others from Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi (daily 8.00 a.m.
and 2.00 p.m.)
5) Visa. You can get it at the custom (Namanga, KIA, DSM)
6) Vaccinations: for mainland : Yellow Fever. For ZNZ add
Cholera
7) Very few dangerous places in Arusha.
8) You can't go by BIKE into the parks
9) Most parks daily fee is 25 $ for 24 hrs.
10) Single women. Tanzanians are firendly. But don't offend
them. Here, that you like it or not, women are considered
in different way from the western one. Please respect also
the muslim habits, altough you could feel your righjts to
be insulted. This is their country.
11) Where to stay and tz tour operators. e-mail me please
Any other infos, including Zanzibar, e-mail me.
Once in Arusha, welcome to Mambo Jazz cafΦ, Old Moshi Rd.,
Beside AICC hospital. NOW WE WILL BE OPEN ON SUNDAY.
Ciao, giorgio

.... I am getting confused about malaria precautions for
Senegal. I will be south of Dakar for 2 weeks in a beach
resort and probably take some day trips to the "country
side" but will not travel overland.
I am makiing my way through recommendations in the internet,
our doctors in Germany and America but I cannot decide what
to do. I even have asked the beach resort inn Senegal but
they bounced me back to German doctors.
They tell me that there is a Resochin resistance = no need
taking that, Paludrine is an option (2 tablets a day) or
Lariam. But I believe Lariam is too strong and what can you
take in a case of Malaria?
Any suggestions or experiences? Thanks, Birgit

Till now is only a dream as I've got the idea that Africa
is not easy and not cheap.
But since I've the opportunity to ask to other travellers

I really love Africa(excluding the north) expecially black
Africa/animal's africa.
I'm a woman and I usually travel alone and with a really
low budget, that's my problem..
Please give me an idea of of budget per day, and if there
are countries where life is less expensive (for example in
Indonesia you can live with 5USD a day all included, but
just if you moove to Malaysia with that amount you do
nothing..)
How ease or difficult is to moove around with public

Yr help will be really appreciate.
I've already been to kenia but with a frend and with a

My parents (both aged in their mid fifites) are looking for
any feedback from people who have been to Zanzibar, such as
must see things, things to avoid, all to usual stuff. They
are going to east africa in mid august and will probably
only have a few days to spend in Zanzibar. Their budget is
in the mid to high range (a bit vague I know).

For all of you keen on an Overland through namibia , Botswana , and Zimbabwe , or Mozambique . I had a great 2 months on Overland tours . I went with a smaller Company from Cape Town on a 21 cape to Vic falls overland , enjoyed it so much that i also did my Mozambique tour with them . Big companies offer good deals , but you you can not go wrong with a small owner operated caompany . Remember you can inquire from all over the world and make your booking in South Africa , it will be cheaper than to book through an agent in Europe .
I went with Umkulu Adventures : umkulu@kingsley.co.za

Am heading for Morocco in mid July, starting from the UK.
I was wondering if anyone that has been there has seen many
travelers pooling their resources and doing the Kombi
thing? I would be really interested in joining a few
others that may already have plans to head the same way in
a Kombi, as I won't have the time in the UK to organize a
vehicle myself...otherwise, I was just planning on
backpacking on my own using the trains and buses. Any
suggestions?
Cheers!

Can someone tell me how big Hwange National Park is and also
the size of the Masai Mara area. Is Hwange a place where
you have an entrance that you just go out of at night when
you have finished, or is it too big to keep going in and out
of? I get the feeling Masai Mara is a lot bigger and you
have no choice but to camp overnight in it. Also I would
like to do a budget safari camping out, but I'm a little
concerned at the safety of a tent if an animal approaches
it. Are they safe enough, do the guides choose places where
animals don't come near, is there guides guarding the tents
at night? Are there such tents that are on top of cars?
Thanks in advance

Despite what the latest edition of the Zimbabwe, Namibia,
Botswana guide says, you also have to make advance
reservations for the southern parks now (since May 1st,
1998!). Don't try to go there without reservation, or you'll
be send back. You can make the reservations by mail, but 'on

Do yourself a favor and do not photograph anything in any
city in Zambia. My son and I were arrested by beret
wearin', machine gun totin' paramilitary types downtown
Lusaka, Zambia in April '99 when I photographed the
reflection of us together in a plate glass window. We were
accused of spying and were in the process of being booked
and transported to the central jail when they initiated a
bribe. To make a long story short and skip all the details
we finally got out of there after they took what they
believed to be all of our money. (98,000 Kwacha and $60
U.S.) That was by far the most horrifying hour of my life.
Later another American told us the same thing happened to
him when he took a close up shot of a basket of fish in a
market.

We (couple) have plan to go to Eastern Africa for 5 weeks
(from July 1st). Our basic plan: First 2 weeks "normal":
Safari from Nairobi (In rented car) - Masai Mara, Serengeti,
Ngorongoro, Arusha, Amboseli, Nairobi. Then we gone try Air
Zimbabwe to Harare and Victoria Falls and there we have
dilemma:
We would like to visit S Luangwa NP in Zambia and take
TAZARA train to Dar es Salaam. (Then, time permitting,
visit Zanzibar, Mombasa and Lamu). We cant find any reliable
information how to go from Livingstone to S. Luangwa NP and
then to Kapiri Mposhi - starting point for the TAZARA train.
Also I have heard that in order to travel together (w/women)
on the train we have to take coupe (?) that is hard to get.
I dont know how often the train run and if it is safe and
reliable. Any input on this will be greatly appreciated.
Also we are looking for travel companion as well.

hotels and my constant kicking and screaming forced him to
give up. I was naieve and trusting, I know its a cliche

I just wanted to let anyone who is planning on visiting
Zimbabwe know that you really do have to be careful there,
especially females. I was staying at the Africa Sun
Backpackers Lodge in Bulawayo, when the owner of this
business drugged and raped me. This place is listed first
in the Lonely Planet guide! This man has done this several
times before, targets tourists because they won't usually
hang around like I did to press charges. But he paid the
police off anyway, so is still out there.
Please spread the word about this place, and the owner,
Sebastian Kruger. I don't want this to happen to anyone
else.
As well as that, Bulawayo is very bad in terms of theives.
They mainly target tourists at train and bus stops, but also
threw my mother to the ground in broad daylight in the city
to steal her handbag.
BE CAREFUL IN ZIMBABWE, and you'll have a great time.

We plan a 4 week vacation in Namibia in July 99. I made
several inquiries for car rental (I e-mailed about 20
companies !). Prices range from N$ 15000 to 23000, taxes
and everything included for the same car, same camping gear
!
Do you have bad or good experience about car hire to tell
me. The 2 cheapest companies are Enyandi car rental and
Andes car rental. Are they reliable ? Thanks to tell me.

through Africa by myself(basically being a bum before I sign
my life away to grad school). This is kind of a recent plan
of mine, and I'm not sure that I've thought it through
enough. Does anyone who has done this have any advice...
I've been to Africa before (studying in Kenya for 4 months)
so I know basically what I'm getting myself into - but I've
got a million questions.
Is it possible to get short term/longer term jobs easily?
Are their some countries where it's easier to get a job than
others?
What about health insurance? Did you have it? What
companies?
Thanks in advance!!!

I'm heading for Morocco these summer holidays and I'm
searching all over to find some good informations.
Usually attracted by the deep countryside of an country, I
feel intersted this time to visit some cities like Fes and
Marrakesh, which are also very interesting for the culture
of Morocco. Please give me some informations about the
cities to visit and what to visit, about the Atlas
Mountains and some hikes in it or any trip in the desert,
and some advices to know if the people that side are used
to host a traveller in their own homes.
Thanks.

The last 2 months I spent in Cape Town, working-vacation,
and I had an awesome time. I would like to live there, but
my visum has expired... so I moved on.
I was warned about the crime, but nothing happened. Actually
I felt very safe -but, I think apart from common sense it is
necessary to be self-confident and to have trust in other
people. I especially liked the coloured areas, but also the
waterfront, the mountain, Stellenbosch, Kirstenbosch, Cape
Point, the SA museum, the National Gallery and the Botanic
Gardens are great.
It is one of the best places in the world. Thanks to all
Capetonians!

By way of introduction, I live and work here in Dar es
Salaam in Tanzania. I am involved in launching a new ezine
based here on Tanzania. The first issue is expected to be
launched in July. An idea came to me after reading the
postings here that there may be a few travelers heading
through Tanzania who would like to record their journey and
experience on the road, and we could use this as an article
every month from a different person. There is no money
involved, but after a year here I would be happy buy you
lunch in Zanzibar and pick up your notes. Or you could
email them through to us from an internet cafe on route.
I think that once we get establishe we could be of helpm to
you all with information for your travels in this country.
Anyone out there interested in this idea, drop me a line.
Best wishes for your safari

Ready for a stupid one? I don't quite understand exactly how the food/beer kitty system works on an organized trip. Does everybody put the same amount in for the beer? I'm a lush and after a long, hot day of hiking like to knock back beer after beer: that doesn't seem too fair if a tea-totaler puts in the same amount but only has one or two. How exactly does this usually work and what is the usual kitty amount per day? Thanks and sorry for ignorance...

I have followed these messages for a few weeks and wonder what you all define an overland trip as being? I always thought a true overland trip was like a trans-continental one (eg: London to Nairobi), but it seems that most of you guys that have done an 'overland' trip do the more traditional route of Nairobi/Harare to SA or v.v. Would you not be better off defining a shorter tip as a camping trip/safari.............Is this a snobbish attitude? Probably.

Madagascar looks excellent to me, but i find it very hard to get some usefull information. When is the best time to travel, what are the cost? Places to see, things to do? I don't want to go to Mauritius or something like that, can't afford it, i'm not a millionair yet. How do i get there and is there a boat connection between this island and the African mainland? Hopefully you can fill in a few answers.
Greetings from The Netherlands, Jean-Pierre

I read and heard jokes from African-American being happy
they have been slaves and taken out of Africa. They are
actually the first, and hardest attackers and critics of
this wonderful Continent. I'm an American who lived in West
Africa (notably Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana) for 18 years and I
just can't conceive rejecting such a wonderful land if my
origins were linked to it. What do you think the problem of
African-American might be so that they insist so badly on
distaching themselves from Africa?

I've provisionally booked a place on a trip to go up
kilimanjaro via the Marangu route up to the summit of Uhuru
Peak this is over 5-6 days. From there north-west to
Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Crater. The
onto the Tarangire National Park. We'd start the climb
around the 27th December. Could anyone give me advice on
this? Is this an OK time to go?
cheers.

We are intending to travel around Namibia in August.
(1) Can anyone recommend a good, inexpensive tour around
Etosha. Do we need to book in advance, or will we be able to
organise this from Windhoek?
(2) Is it better to hire a car or go on a tour to "do" the
Namib desert and Naukluft Mountains. Ideally we would like
to go to the Sossusvlei, and Nauklauf - nice day walks.
Can anyone recommend a tour or car hire company.
(3) Is Swakompund a "must"?
(4) We want to do the Fish River Canyon hike. Transport to
and from the "main track" (Keetmanshoop or Grunau) seems to
be the main problem. How have people organised transport
before? I would imagine there being minbuses or something
fron Keetmanshoop.
(5) Is it easy enough to get a bus from either Keetmanshoop
or Grunau to Capetown, or would it be advisable to book e.g.
in Windhoek. What buses run, how often?
Thanks to all
Al and Bec

What arrangements have people made to "do" Kruger park from
Pretoria ? it sounds like most people recommend hiring a
car. Any good/bad car rental firms in Pretoria/ Jo'burg/
Neilspruit? Has anyone done an organised tour that they
would recommend?
How many days do people recommend staying in Kruger? What
way round have people gone - I thought going in one of the
southern entrances, driving north to eg Oliphants then
further north eg Shingwedzi, and out at Punda Maria, then on
to Blyde Canyon. How far do you cover at an unhurried pace
each day - we do aactually want to see the animals!! 50 to
100 km?
Is Blyde Canyon worth a look in on the way back - apparently
there is a reasonable campsite there.
Thanks for any answers to our two million questions !

Hi all,
I'm heading to Africa, and hence need to nail down what to
do re. malaria. This is what I (think I) know:
1) Mefloquine (Lariam) once a week prophylaxis
OR
2) Chloroquine weekly + Proguanil daily phophylaxis
Ok, now, I've also heard that i need to carry a cure with me
in addition to the prophylaxis in case i get malaria in
spite of my efforts. So, what constitues a cure? Say I'm
on Lariam, and get malaria. Do I then use Chloroquine and
Proguanil as the cure? Do I stop the Lariam at this point?
I have spoken with Doctors already about some of this, but
wanted all the information I can possibly get. Don't I also
need a self-diagnosing kit? Are these reliable?
oh, one more thing. What mosquito netting do people use?
One that drops over your bed/sleeping bag? Or just the
helmet type? Or not at all?
Thanks all in advance.
allie

I'd really like some help on deciding which overland trip to
go on. I've seen advertising for lots of different companies
and they all look good, so I thought I'd ask all you
experienced travelers for your opinions!
I'm a 24 year old english female who has not traveled much
before, and the idea of backpacking fills me with dread (I
think I'm not "street-wise" enough!) I want to go to east /
south africa, probably for about 5 weeks, possibly over the
millenium.
Although I've not travelled abroad much, I'm used to camping
and 'roughing it'. I'm more inclined to go on one of the
trips that provides a cook as food hygene is important to me
, but I don't mind being expected to help with the camp
chores, seting up tents etc.
What do you think????
Thanks in advance for any information or advice you want to
throw my direction,
nicole.

I met a South African recently who moved to the UK about a
year ago. When I asked him his reasons for moving (family,
career etc?) he said it was because he is certain there
will be a civil war in SA within the next year. He is now
trying to persuade his parents to leave too.
What are peoples' thoughts on this? (especially South
Africans). Is he paranoid or is this realistic?

I have been reading TT over the past month or so and
observed many 'conversations' about so called 'women
travellers'. Comments such as 'Is it safe for women?' or
'Will I be harassed?'. At the risk of starting a
controversial thread I really have to ask the following:
why is it that there is a general inclination for men, and
not women, to travel as lone travellers to remote, 'hard-
core', dangerous (and so on) parts of the world? Do you
think that women in this day and age are still subject to
the 'prejudices' of an older and less enlightened
generation? Are they in some way conditioned to expect that
because they are women, they will attract trouble? This is
not to say that women choose not to travel because of such
reasons, but that they are conditioned to EXPECT attention
because of their gender? Are we right to assume that men in
other parts of the world carry the same attitudes towards
women as men of our own country do? Do men head out in fear
of their own safety? What do they fear? Please read my
words carefully before commenting, slam me if you will, but
to anyone who has something serious to say, I at least
would like to know what it is. I will post in other TT
branches and judge the reactions......

I'm planning to spend 8-12 months in Africa, and all the
countries I want to visit have high malaria risk. What have
you African travellers done about this problem? Taking the
anti-malaria pills (I have Lariam) for too long is
dangerous, and not taking them regularly is
dangerous...should I just take them in extremely risky
places?

Anyway: "You're from [insert country here], do you know so-

many of us have ASKED this same question!

Me: (Cowering with polecat guilt) South Africa.

Me: Yes.

I am researching this topic for an article in a local
magazine. Please contribute if you have ever been asked
any questions like the following...
"Do these rafts run on tracks?" (Before a day run down the
Zambezi)
"Do they turn the Victoria Falls off at night?"
"Are the Falls man-made?"
"Do we finish where we start?" (Another from a rafting trip
down the Zambezi and this from an engineer too!)
"Is that an island?" (On approaching Heron Island on the
Barrier Reef from the air)"No its a free floating land
mass!"
Please let me know of more gems like these from any
fellow tourists or tour operators.
Thankyou

I am currently beginning the process of applying to the
Peace Corps - to leave in January 2000. I am a Business
Administration and Law major, but the thing I truly love is
travelling. Anyone who has been in the Peace Corps and
can give me advice on whether or not to do it, your opinions
are welcome. I am concerned about the two year commitment,
but think that would be the best way to truly understand
another culture - by learning the language and being part of
the way of life.
If anyone knows of any 6-12 month volunteer or work
opportunities in Africa, India, or Nepal that are not too
expensive so I can do this without committing so long,
please let me know. It is easier for me if you respond via
e-mail. Thanks.

I just got through reading this book by Keith Richburg
called "Out of America: A Black Man Confronts Africa".
Keith did a three year stint in Africa as a journalist,
hitting the hot spots at the time - Somalia, Rwanda, etc.
~
He comes away with a very depressed feeling about Africa -
a place with lots of violence and little hope. In the final
chapters he comes up with reasons why so many other areas
of the world have progressed, while Africa continues to
decay - one of which, he believes, is a lack of discipline
among the people as a whole. Finally, the author concludes
by saying that he is glad that his ancestors long ago had
been taken from Africa as he is happy to be an American (he
does not, of course, condone slavery, but admits that he
has a better life in America than he could have enjoyed in
Africa).
~
It is a controversial book, but a fascinating look at
Africa through the eyes of a black American man. Well
written and intelligent throughout, I would highly
recommend the book for anyone with an interest in this
region.
