Sports Illustrated: Cost-cutting has hindered iPad...

If you're a regular reader of the Sports Illustrated (SI) publication for the iPad, you may have noticed something unusual / different in the latest issue. The SI iPad edition is now only viewable in landscape mode, no longer supporting portrait mode as it did in previous issues. If you hold your iPad in landscape mode and then turn it to portrait mode the message, "This page is intended to be viewed in landscape mode. (There's nothing wrong with your iPad -- just turn it horizontally.)" appears.

Guest editor of the SI iPad edition, Josh Quittner (Time Magazine), comments on this change in his personal blog. Quittner says that he believes the optimal viewing experience for photo-driven magazines, like SI, is in landscape mode. He also adds that by not editing in two formats (landscape and portrait) some...

Information Architects' Writer, Or Building the...

Most apps appear in the App Store with little fanfare. Information Architects' Writer arrived with a manifesto. In it, the group outlines the many decisions they made in their quest to design the perfect writing environment for the iPad.

The key to good writing, they say, is focus, and the guiding principle of Writer was to minimize distractions. That means no autocorrection, no scroll bars, and no cut and paste. Just you and the text. A Focus Mode even blurs out everything but the three lines you're currently working on, keeping your focus locked on the sentence you're writing.

Information Architects also took pains to make sure that the typography was just right. After consulting with various...

10-minute Bioshock Infinite trailer hallucinatory,...

It's rare that we run a post that consists mostly of "hey, watch this video." That said... hey, watch this video:

Infinite

Many people argued that we didn't need a sequel to Bioshock, but Bioshock 2 was enjoyable and very much worth the return trip to Rapture. At the end of the game, however, I did feel strongly that the tale had been told. Having Irrational Games return to the series with a new setting but familiar aesthetics is wonderful, and things already feel fresh and exciting.

It's going to be a long wait until 2012.

Rumor: Apple to build 3 million CDMA iPhones in...

Jeffrey Fidacaro with Susquehanna Financial Group has claimed that Apple is prepared to begin assembling CDMA iPhones in December, and will produce 3 million units for a 2011 launch -- such phones would obviously be intended for a CDMA carrier like Verizon or Sprint.

Furthermore, as AI reports, Fidacaro expects Apple to crank out 11.6 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of FY 2010, which would be a new record for Apple, and a 39% increase from Q3 in FY 2010.

Such a production schedule would produce between 21 million and 22 million GSM and CDMA iPhones for the quarter. That seems like an awfully ambitious number, as manufacturers struggle to fill orders in...

Neuroshima Hex on iPhone: great board game port,...

Neuroshima Hex is a tactical tile-based game where two armies square off on a grid of hexes and seek to destroy the opponent's HQ. By placing tiles that represent attacking units, tiles that gives certain units buffs, and tiles that represent immediate actions such as throwing a grenade, you're able to attack your opponent and hopefully whittle his HQ's hit points down to nothing.

The basics are simple, but the strategy can become interesting as you mix up ranged and melee attackers, decide which tiles to keep and which to discard each round, and worry about the order of attack by looking at the initiative of your units during the Battle phase. Here's a look at the game in action on the iPad. Keep in mind that the game is...

New study questions extent of iPod-induced hearing...

digg_url = 'http://www.tuaw.com/2010/09/22/new-study-questions-extent-of-ipod-induced-hearing-loss/';

Have you heard? Apparently iPods cause hearing loss. A Journal of the American Medical Association study published in August found that 14.9 percent of teenagers aged 12-19 suffered from hearing loss from 1988-94; 19.5 percent of the same age group had hearing loss from 2005-06. Throw in another statistic, a 100 percent increase in the number of iPods in existence from 2005-06 as compared to 1988-94, and it's clear what's behind this statistically significant rise in teen hearing loss.

Or maybe it's not so clear, after regarding a meta-study from the University of Minnesota. Researchers there found that 15 percent of the university's marching band members suffered from hearing...

iPhone App Filters in Important Outside Noise When...

How often have you listened to music in the office, and not realized someone's shouting at you? Or unknowingly missed an announcement on the train that the course was changing? "Awareness! The Headphone App!" could be a $5 life-saver.

Available for both the iPhone and iPod Touch, it utilizes the inbuilt microphone and feeds in relevant outside noise over the music. How does the app know what's relevant or not? Well, it's probably not accurate 100 per cent of the time, but any sharp noises (such as a car horn, or someone suddenly shouting) will make it over your David Bowie, but constant noise, such as a jackhammer or people talking next to you, will remain blocked out.

Well, as blocked out as they always were, which is to say... [iTunes via Shiny Shiny via...

We could finally be nearing the end of the lost iPhone saga. Way back in April, police launched a probe into the alleged sale of the lost prototype iPhone 4 that was found in a bar near San Jose earlier this year, and CNET is now reporting that the investigation is almost over. Chief Deputy District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe of California's San Mateo County says that the final report on the probe could be sent to his office in the next few weeks, at which point he'll look at what evidence was collected and see if charges need to be brought.

Wagstaffe also says that multiple Apple employees were interviewed in the case, including Steve Jobs himself. Police also searched Gizmodo editor Jason Chen's house at one point (the phone was reportedly sold to Gizmodo by a college student...

TUAW's Daily App: Undercroft

Undercroft
is an iPhone RPG that's reminiscent of the old Elder Scrolls games; it's turn based, and seen from a first-person perspective (even though you actually play a party of adventurers). This is strictly fantasy fare, and it doesn't do a lot that's new. For the first few quests, you're fighting rats and spiders, and you'll need to level up, deal with loot, and do lots and lots of exploring and quest completing before getting anywhere. But as traditional as it is, it's actually a lot of fun, and the retro format translates well to the iPhone's touchscreen. We've seen elsewhere that the iPhone can do next-gen games, but it's nice to see older forms like this finding a tidy home on the App Store.

And what the heck, ... it won't cost you anything. The game is sponsored by developer Jagex's Runescape at the moment, so you can download and play the whole thing...

Guild Wars 2 uses iOS apps for 'extended...

Guild Wars 2 is going to become the latest big PC game to get a satellite iPhone app. Our friends at Massively have a post up about the "extended experience" that ArenaNet is going to offer in the MMO sequel. You won't be able to play the full game on your iPhone or iPad, but you will be able to chat with friends, browse the world of the game, access character and achievement information, and even wiki information about the game, either from a mobile location or just using the mobile device alongside you as you play. It all sounds really interesting, and actually very forward-thinking; lots of gamers have an extra device around them as they're playing these PC games, so why not use the iPhone or iPad to enable mobile connectivity and add on to the...

Apple files suit against Sanho-owned HyperMac...

If you’re going to be in the market with the 800 pound gorilla, it’s advisable not to infringe on said 800 pound gorilla’s patents.

Or at least try to be subtle about it.

Per AppleInsider, Apple has filed a lawsuit against Sanho Corporation, maker of the HyperMac line of accessories, alleging violation of patents it owns related to the MagSafe charger and cables that use the iPod 30-pin connection.

The lawsuit filed this month accuses Sanho, based out of Sunnyvale, Calif., of infringing on six MagSafe- and iPod-related patents, covering a variety of products sold under the HyperMac brand name. Among the products named in the suit are its magnetic power connectors, known as MBP-PRO and MBP-AIR, as well as a MacBook car charger, MBP-CAR.

Instead of mimicking Apple’s patented MagSafe connectors, Sanho’s products actually rely on...

Sigma brings 15.4-megapixel SD1 DSLR to Photokina

Japanís Sigma Corp. has today taken the covers off its flagship Sigma SD1 15.4 megapixel DSLR at Photokina. It adopts a lightweight, weather-proof, solid magnesium alloy body to house its 1.5X crop Foveon X3 sensor. The technology enables the camera to capture all primary RGB colors at each pixel location rather than use a Bayer filter and leads Sigma to make a questionable claim to a 46-megapixel sensor....

Apple tops consumer satisfaction survey again

For the seventh straight year in a row, Apple has topped the American Customer Satisfaction Index survey, ringing in at number one on the annual list of PC manufacturers as ranked by customers. And it earned its best score ever -- an 86 out of 100. That's nine points ahead of its closest competitors, which are Dell, Acer, and HP. As you can see from the chart above, Apple is on its way up as well.

It's tempting to lay success like this at the feet of the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, but keep in mind that this is strictly about PC manufacturers. Consumers are more satisfied than ever with their Macs, and it shows on the sales side as well, with...

Apple Ripens - Harvest Time Is Here

Shares of Apple hit a new high of $287.36 in volatile trading Tuesday, only to settle back down to $283.77 by market close -- still a daily gain of 54 cents. The gain was pushed on by a wave of good news, anchored by the iPad's good reception in China and Apple's plans to sell the iPhone 4 in that country Sept. 25, not to mention Apple stellar showing in the latest American Consumer Satisfaction Index. One immediate catalyst was Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu's prediction Monday that the iPad will help Apple beat expectations for the current quarter.

Australian Schools Go iPad-Crazy

An anonymous reader writes "Looks like it's not just Apple fanboys that are going wild for the iPad: in Australia, virtually every state education department is trialling the tablet in schools — and some schools are even trialling it without the official support of their department. One university in Adelaide has even abolished textbooks for first year science students and is allocating free iPads to first year students instead. It will be interesting to see what happens when the inevitable wave of Android tablets hits over the next six months."

Facebook for iOS updated, fixes what last update...

A previous update of Facebook's iOS app completely messed up a handful of features, particularly its push notification services. I'd be browsing through status updates, exit out of the app, and see a notification badge had popped up. Curious to see what was new, I'd go back into the app and check out the notifications ... only to find notifications for stuff I'd already read. This wasn't a "once in a while" kind of bug, either; it happened nearly every time I used the app.

Facebook's app has been updated to 3.2.3, and it claims to fix not only the push notifications issues but also crashes associated with viewing messages and errors involving Facebook's Places feature. So far, things seem to be running smoother for me. However, based on the feedback that this update's received so far on the App Store, it hasn't been a universal fix. Download the update and see for yourself if it fixes any issues you may...
