Apple posts article on iPad/Wi-Fi issues
Having problems getting an iPad to join or rejoin an Wi-Fi network? Apple has posted a KnowledgeBase article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3304) on the matter. Apple says that, under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known Wi-Fi network after restart or waking from sleep. This can occur with some third-party Wi-Fi routers that are dual-band capable when using the same network name for each network or using different security settings for each network. If you encounter this issue, try the following: ° Create separate Wi-Fi network names to identify each band. This can be done by appending one or more characters to the current network name. ° Ensure that both networks use the same security type (WEP, WPA, WPA2, and so on) ° If the issue persists, reset your network settings using Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. ° Always ensure that your Wi-Fi router firmware is up to date.

iFixit, Chipworks tear down the iPad chip
Deconstructing processors like the A4 usually happens behind the closed doors of only a handful of companies. However, iFixit and Chipworks have teamed up to bring us a closer look at how semiconductor teardowns are conducted, as well as a peak inside the iPad's A4 chip. Here's part of what they found: ° The A4 package has three layers: two layers of RAM (Samsung K4X1G323PE), and one layer containing the actual microprocessor. ° This Package-on-Package construction gives Apple the flexibility to source the RAM from any manufacturer they want; they're not locked into Samsung. ° It's clear from both hardware and software that this is a single core processor, so it must be the ARM Cortex A8, and NOT the rumored multicore A9. ° iFixit and Chipworks don't expect to find any markings from PA Semi, Apple's recent acquisition, but it's safe to assume they played a major role in designing this package. °  Every iPhone processor that we have dissected has had a Samsung part number on the...

Analyst: iPhone OS 4.0 unveiling will include multitasking, iAd
Apple's unveiling of iPhone OS 4.0 later this week will likely include full multitasking support, the new "iAd" mobile advertising service, and gaming related announcements, Kaufman Brothers analyst Shaw told clients in a note today. He said checks with his sources indicate that iPhone OS 4.0 will be a full multi-tasking environment where third-party applications will be able to run simultaneously and in the background along with Apple's own built-in applications, as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). While multitasking will be important for the iPhone and iPod touch, it'll be even more important for the iPad, the analyst said. "We believe this will be particularly important for the iPad, due to its much faster processor and much larger screen where users will more likely want the capability to run multiple applications much like most do with their PCs and Macs," Wu says. "We believe this will allow AAPL to deliver a fuller and more differentiated experience on...

Verizon CEO: it's up to Apple if we carry the iPhone
Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg says it's up to Apple whether or not his company will carry the iPhone. But he says he's amendable to the idea. However, he didn't confirm the report or give any details. The "Wall Street Journal" claims Apple is developing a new iPhone to debut this summer and also appears to be working on a model for Verizon Wireless. iPad expected to represent bulk of slate shipments in 2010
For 2010, the total portable computer market is expected to grow to 215 million units and US$117 billion, according to a new report by DisplaySearch (http://www.displayresearch.com). And the iPad will play a key role. Dramatic increases in the size of the slate-style market are expected to be driven by the iPad and slates from other brands that are expected to be launched this year. DisplaySearch expects slates to take some market share from clamshell-style netbooks, as well as lure customers that desire more functionality away from the e-reader market. The company also foresees the majority of slate volume to ship into the North American and Western European markets due, in large part, to Apple’s distribution plans and known content agreements. The mini-note/netbook/slate category will be the fastest-growing segment of the portable computer market for 2010, propelled in part by the introduction of slates, says DisplaySearch. However, clamshell style devices will continue to grow as...

iPad review, part I: the design, music, movies and games
My iPad -- the US$699, 64GB Wi-Fi-only version -- is a great Mac companion, as I mentioned yesterday. It's already replaced my iPod touch and may replace my laptop (though the jury's still out on that). I've been using it heavily since it arrived Saturday, and, so far, I'm more impressed than I thought I'd be, though there's room for improvement. Well, probably not in the design of the iPad itself. As you'd expect, it's another exquisite piece of work from Apple. The 9.7-inch screen with its 1024 x 768 pixel resolution is gorgeous. As is the minimalist design. Jobs & Company can't quite eliminate buttons, though I think they'd love to. On the iPad, there's a home button on the screen, a sleep/power button and volume adjuster at the top right, and a switch that locks the iPad into either horizontal or portrait view. Built-in speakers are on the bottom of the iPad and provide more oomph than you'd think, though they'll not replace dedicated speakers or a good pair of headphones by...

App downloads pick up pace after smartphone sales soar
ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) expects 2010 to be a big year for mobile application downloads, with just under six billion mobile applications forecast to be downloaded, up from an estimated 2.4 billion in 2009. The rapid adoption of smartphones, registering a sales growth of 20% in 2009, as well as the proliferation of application stores are the major drivers for this expansion. In addition, two new smartphone platforms will make their debut later this year; Samsung’s Bada OS and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Series. Both platforms, similar to Apple’s, will have proprietary application stores and are racing to populate these stores with winning applications, according to the research group. “The iPhone will continue to be the leading app platform, with a database of over 125,000 applications offering niche and localized content,” says wireless research associate Bhavya Khanna. “Other platforms are still playing catch-up, with Android being the fastest gainer among them....

Another day, another lawsuit. EMG Technology will move to include the iPad as an additional accused product in EMG’s previously filed patent infringement lawsuit against Apple, which is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. “EMG will take steps to add Apple’s newly released iPad to the range of Apple products already accused of patent infringement in the case, including the iTunes Store, iPhone, iPod touch and Apple TV. The trial date is set for September 12, 2011,” says Shawn Hansen, an attorney with the Palo Alto, California office of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, which is representing EMG in the case. “The irony is that recently Apple filed an International Trade Commission action against HTC, a major manufacturer of Google and Microsoft smart phones for allegedly infringing Apple’s patents," says Elliot A. The iPad could offer "significant" cannibalization of Apple's laptop sales, according to "Seeking Alpha" (http://seekingalpha.com/article/196954-mac-notebook-cannibalization-from...). "Seeking Alpha" estimates that there could be $15 (6%) downside to Apple’s stock if iPad sales were to eventually cannibalize about half of Mac notebook sales. Four in 10 UK consumers want a tablet
There was good news for Apple today with new research from price comparison site Kelkoo UK stating that 40 per cent of consumers are ready to ditch their laptops for a tablet PC like the iPad, reports "V3" (http://www.v3.co.uk/v3/news/2260785/four-ten-uk-consumers-fancy"). When it comes to the iPad, 23% felt its functionality was too limited at the moment, while 32% said they didn’t see the need for one at all. However, Bruce Fair, managing director of Kelkoo UK,says the iPad could do for the tablet market what the iPhone did for the smartphone market and pave the way for a host of imitators. “When it comes to transforming the fortunes of niche markets, Apple undoubtedly has the ‘Midas touch’,” he told "V3." “The iPad is a hybrid of Apple’s best loved products all under one roof, which is good for consumers as it could lead to significant cost savings. iPad developer support continues to soar
Since Apple introduced the iPad in late January, Flurry Analytics (http://www.flurry.com/) -- a cross-platform mobile application analytics provider -- says it's noticed a significant spike in developer support, indicating early excitement for the promise of the device. As April 3 draws near, developers continue to develop for the iPad at a fever pitch. Today Apple added a toggle switch to its online iTunes store that allows consumers to view apps available specifically developed for the iPad. About 2,000 iPad apps were listed upon Flurry's initial count. Comparing the two pie charts from Flurry, the first notable difference is that iPad made up 22% of new projects starts within Flurry over the last 60 days. In March, over 3,000 unique applications were created within Flurry. A second point of interest is that Android's share of new project starts has decreased from 18% to 10%. However, it shouldn't be concluded that Android developer support is on the decline, say the folks at...

Microsoft says no Office for the iPad for now
In what may be good news for Apple's iWork apps, Microsoft has no plans to make Office products for the iPad, Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft’s business division, told "Bloomberg" (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewsstory&tkr=AAPL%3AUS&sid=auK...).. At least not yet. Elop said the company would take a “wait and see” approach to tailoring software for the iPad, which goes on sale on April 3. “We never say never, but we have no current plans” to develop a version of Office for the Apple iPad, he added. An iPad edition of Office would likely be built by a unit within Microsoft’s consumer business that creates versions of Office that work with Apple’s Macintosh personal computers. Kristen Woody, a spokesman for that unit, told "Bloomberg" it “doesn’t have anything to share at this time.”

Overall satisfaction among smartphone and traditional handset owners whose phones are equipped with touch screens is considerably higher than satisfaction of owners of phones that have other input mechanisms, according to a new report by J.D. Power and Associates (http://www.JDPower.com). And the iPhone leads the pack in customer satisfaction. Currently, slightly more than one-half of owners indicate their smartphone has a touch screen for navigation. USITC to investigate Apple's complaint against HTC
A U.S. trade agency will investigate Apple's patent-infringement claims against Taiwan’s HTC Corp. to determine if its phones using Google’s Android operating system should be banned from the U.S. Last month Apple filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware. As many as 10 of those violations involve the Nexus One, Apple said in a complaint submitted to the ITC. The Delaware lawsuit, however, didn't specify the HTC-made phones that allegedly violated Apple's patents. In a statement (http://www.usitc.gov/press_room/news_release/2010/er0331hh2.htm), the USITC says: "The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) has voted to institute an investigation of certain personal data and mobile communications devices and related software. The products at issue in this...

Analyst: Apple selling every iPad it can build
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster tells clients that his initial estimates of 900,000 iPads sold in the June quarter and 2.7 million in calendar year 2010 “may prove to be conservative" and that Apple is selling every iPad it can build. As reported by All Things D (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Munster-Apple-is-Selling-allthingsd-418258...), Munster thinks Apple will sell between 200,000 and 300,000 iPads this weekend -- comparable to the 270,000 first gen iPhones it sold at launch. And he thinks the chances are good that the company will sell out of the tablet device. “When Apple began taking pre-orders customers could pre-order for home delivery on April 3 or in-store pickup on April 3,” Munster told clients. “A week before the launch (on March 27) the company pushed back the shipping date to April 12 and ended the in-store reservation program for the launch. And in preparation for the launch, on March 31 Apple retail stores began calling those with iPad pickup reservations to...

Swiss court shoots down Apple's iPhone trademark appeal
Uh oh. Apple has asked for reconsideration of its trademark application for the word “iPhone” by the Swiss Federal Administrative Court. They were denied, with the court maintaining that the term is a non-distinctive word for which Apple could not be granted a trademark. The Court rejected the application for the class 9 goods on the grounds that "iPhone" will be immediately understood by consumers as describing a telephone with Internet or information technology-related functions, and accordingly represents a non-distinctive, descriptive indication. Apple has argued that the prefix "i" can have numerous different meanings, all of which seem equally likely to the addressed market circles. The Managing Intellectual Property site (http://www.managingip.com/Article/2456399/IPHONE-mark-held-inherently-no...) says that, according to Apple's argument, the numerous possible meanings of the mark will evoke various different associations in the addresses, resulting in uncertainty as to the...

Study: iPad could eventually replace Windows computers for some
According to a new poll conducted by ORC (http://www.opinionresearch.com), an Infogroup Company, the vast majority of US consumers (71%) are familiar with Apple’s iPad. Six percent plan on buying one within a year, equating to a sale of about seven million units, and 1% said they will purchase one as soon as it becomes available, which would translate to a sale of approximately one million units. The findings in ORC’s survey correspond closely with market analyst predictions that five million iPads will be sold in 2010. Based on the results of ORC’s research, it is clear that a significant number of tech-hungry consumers are interested in an iPad in the short-term, but what does this mean for the long-term success of the product? “Adoption of new technologies is often a slow and gradual process,” says Kevin Wood, vice president and senior analyst with ORC’s technology practice. “It wasn’t that long ago when the Blackberry smartphone was only used by executives and road warriors....
