Play PAL movies at correct speed in VLC

Have you been annoyed by PAL-encoded movies playing a little faster than usual, where the music's tempo is wrong and everyone talks a little faster?

If you have VLC, here's how to fix it:

  • Open VLC.
  • Go to the 'VLC' menu and select 'Preferences‚Ķ'
  • In the radio buttons in the lower-left corner of the window, change 'Basic' to 'All'.
  • Click on 'Input / Codecs' in the left-hand side list.
  • In the right-hand side frame look for 'Playback speed' and change it to 0.96 (use a comma if your system uses that as the decimal separator).
  • Click on 'Audio' in the left-hand side list.
  • In the right-hand side frame disable 'Enable time stretching audio'.
  • Click the 'Save' button on the lower-right corner of the window.
  • Quit and relaunch VLC.

Enjoy your PAL movie at the correct speed!

iTunes 10 Go to Current Song behavior

When playing a Genius Mix in iTunes 10 hitting Command+L (or selecting the menu item View » Go to Current Song) now toggles between the Genius Mix window and the main library where the song is highlighted as though you had chosen to play it from the main library.

In previous versions of iTunes 'Go to Current Song' would frustratingly take you only to the Genius Mix window, so if you wanted to select another song from that particular album or artist quickly you couldn't do it.

The window switching behavior only works with songs playing from a Genius Mix.
If the Library view is set to List or Cover Flow, invoking 'Go to Current Song' will swap between Genius Mixes and Library view just like you'd expect. If the view in Library is set to Album List or Grid then invoking 'Go to Current Song' will default the view to List. The only exception is if the previous view before setting it to Grid was Cover Flow. In this...

Properly Indicating Required Device Capabilities

If your app requires certain hardware features to run properly on a user's device, you need to add a list of those requirements to the UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities key in your Info.plist file. However, you should only add keys for features you must have. Setting a key to false is not the same as leaving out the key. When you set a key to false, you are instructing your app to run only if the device does not have the requirements. Ensuring that you have properly set your UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities key is important so that users don't install your app on a device that lacks the necessary hardware.

You can learn more about properly indicating specific hardware requirements in your Info.plist file by reading Understanding the UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities key.

Getting Non-Apple video formats into Spotlight

The availability of software like Perian and Flip4Mac that make non-Apple video formats available to QuickTime and players like VLC and MPlayer means that many of us have files in formats like Flash and Windows Media Video that Mac OS X's Spotlight metadata subsystem recognizes as 'Movies' but for which it cannot determine video-specific metadata like dimensions, codecs, duration, and bitrate. It is possible to fix this in Leopard by duplicating and modifying a piece of the base OS, but in Snow Leopard it takes a bit more effort.

(This hint is also useful for 10.5 and probably 10.4, but 10.6 adds a special twist.)
Spotlight indexing relies on software components called 'metadata importers' to get format-specific details about various file types, which are packaged...

iTunes 10 Album Art controller always on top

I love the new feature of iTunes 10 to use album art as a mini-player (if you click on the album art preview in the bottom left, the album art that pops up now has hover controls to change tracks); but what if you want this to always be visible when working in other applications?

In iTunes, go to Preferences » Advanced and check the box 'Keep movie window on top of all other windows.' Now the album art controller will always be visible. I like to make it super small and tuck it into a corner. Works great!

[crarko adds: It tested this in 10.6.4. This is a followup to this earlier hint. I'd expect it should work in both 10.5 and 10.6, just like that one did.]

Precise calibration in the Calibration Assistant

You can use the arrow keys to set the sliders in the Calibration Assistant precisely.
When custom-calibrating your display using Mac OS X's Calibration Assistant (the application that comes up when you click 'Calibrate' on the Color tab of the Displays preference pane), most of the work is in determining your display's native response curves, which you do by setting two sliders (one one-dimensional, the other two-dimensional) until an Apple logo is invisible against a striped background. [crarko adds: Note that 'Expert Mode' needs to be checked in the first screen of the Calibration Assistant for this hint to work.]

It's possible and most obvious to do this using the mouse, but it's very easy to move the mouse more than a single step (especially when using a trackpad). This hurts your ability to make precise adjustments.

There is an alternative: Use the arrow keys. Even with full keyboard access off, you still get keyboard...

Hide/show the iTunes Store in iTunes

For infrequent users of the iTunes Store, here is an AppleScript to enable and visit the Store within iTunes, then leave and disable it.
First, go into the System Preferences » Universal Access prefpane and check 'Enable access for assistive devices.'

Then you can download this script and save it to ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/iTunes. This will place it in the Script menu when iTunes is active. You may need to create the iTunes subfolder. You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to the script using Spark [crarko adds: link fixed] or some similar program (not Quicksilver, I don't think it remembers persistent values across uses). View bandwidth of iTunes downloads

This may or may not be new but I never noticed it until iTunes 10. I was downloading a podcast and noted that in the Downloads area in the iTunes sidebar the 'X mins remaining' status and clicked on the actual text by accident. Doing this added the current rate as the podcast was being downloaded to the display. Like I said before, this may be old news but definitely cool if it's just been added.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described, in iTunes U as well as podcasts, so I assume it's just a general feature of downloads in iTunes. This has probably been around a while, but I didn't see it documented here. As mentioned in this previous hint, it can be worth it to monitor the bandwidth usage in case you have some other bandwidth-hungry application running.]

iOS 4.1 restores limited Field Test mode

In older versions of the iPhone OS software, it was possible to enter Field Test mode to get a lot of useful data about the cellular connection. This capability was removed in iOS 4.0, and caused some angst while trying to examine the iPhone 4 antenna reception issues.

The ability has been restored, although to a greatly limited degree, with iOS 4.1. Once again, if you dial the number *3001#12345#* in the keypad you will enter FTM. What you will see now is a negative number (presumably representing the signal loss in dB) in the upper left that replaces the cellular signal strength bars. A more negative number means lower relative signal strength, so the -121 I have at the moment is worse than the -92 I had in a different room in the house. Zero would be no signal loss.

Add custom genre icons to iTunes 10

In iTunes 10 Grid View: Genres, you can create your very own icons to represent any genres you like, even custom genres.
Disclaimer: Do this at your own risk and of course make backups of any files you alter.

First, be sure iTunes is not running. Then, right-click on iTunes and select 'Show Package Contents.' Navigate to Contents » Resources. Inside there you will see lots of really colorful genre images labled 'genre-pop.jpg' or 'genre-rock.jpg' and so on.

Simply copy one of those images to your desktop. Open it up in Photoshop (or your graphics editor of choice) and customize it to your delight. The reason for using a duplicated file is only for the sake of ease in keeping the image size and aspect ratio the same. Save the new image as a flattened jpg. Name it with something like 'genre-mycustomgenre.jpg.' Put this file into the Resources folder. You will need to Authenticate in order to do this.

Find missing files in iTunes 10

I recently had a hard drive failure and had to resort to a backup of iTunes. However, iTunes couldn't find many tracks, as it was still looking for them on the old drive.

Despite manually editing the library files, I couldn't get iTunes to look on my new drive for the several hundred files it had mistakenly misplaced. The only way was to play each one, wait for it to not find the drive and then use the 'Locate' button to find each file.
iTunes 10 has what I can only assume is a new feature, whereby if you use the 'Locate' feature to find a missing file, a dialog box then asks if you would like to use the information to find other missing files. Straight away it found all of the other missing files. Hurrah!

This may not be new functionality, but in all of the times I've used the 'Locate' button, I've never seen this dialog box. This is functionality that has existed in Apple's pro applications such as Logic for years, so I'm...

iTunes Ping: how to like a song

Apple introduced the 'Ping' music social networking service along with iTunes 10. Part of the point is to share music likes and dislikes with other users.

There is an obvious 'Like' button by albums in the iTunes Store, but what about an individual song? It turns out that over on the right hand side, next to the 'BUY' button for the song, the little arrow with the pulldown menu now has a 'Like' option for that song, and if you've signed into Ping it will post that to your recent activity.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described. I'm not sure yet about Ping, although I've signed up. Perhaps if it ties into the App Store and the iBooks Store, and maybe the upcoming iOS Game Center and even MobileMe it will become useful as a social network. I think maybe a poll is forthcoming.]

New volume control behavior in iTunes 10

In iTunes 10, if you select multiple speakers with the new AirPlay feature iTunes will allow you to fine tune the output volume of each speaker.
Previously, sharing to an Airport Express resulted in both outputs being tied directly to the current volume that iTunes was set to use. Set the output to 100% and all speakers would be set to 100%. Move it to 50% and all the speakers will move to 50%.

The new controller has a 'master volume' bar. The highest volume determines the 'master volume'. If the highest volume slider is at 80% then the master volume slider sets itself to 80%. Any change to either the master volume or the highest volume directly correlates to the other. If the highest volume (V1) dips below another volume level (V2) the master volume binds itself to the new highest volume level (V2). This can only happen if the highest volume level is adjusted directly, and not as a result of adjusting the master volume.

Any...

High contrast mode in iTunes 10

If you are struggling with the new low-contrast icons in iTunes 10, here is a hint to change the appearance.

In the terminal enter:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes high-contrast-mode-enable -bool TRUE

This will give a high-contrast side bar and listing pane. To undo this repeat the command but change the TRUE to FALSE. I haven't managed to get the color icons back yet though.

The preference AppleAquaColorVariant is next in the list after high-contrast-mode-enable and also does something, unfortunately every value I've tried so far prevents iTunes from launching. If you want to experiment, you can remove it to fix iTunes with:

defaults delete com.apple.iTunes AppleAquaColorVariant

[crarko adds: I tried this, and what it does is go from black on white to white on black. That certainly is higher contrast but I don't...

Keep fixed window positions in Spaces

If you're a frequent user of Spaces, you'll often find yourself moving windows between spaces, however, if you like to have your large windows properly centered (e.g. in Safari or other browsers) you'll find it difficult to properly center the window when moving between spaces, leaving part of the window off-screen, and needing to be adjusted.

The solution is simple, all you have to do is enter Exposé from the spaces overview, and then move the windows between spaces. Once you exit Exposé, you'll find the window will be in the exact same location on the screen it was in the previous space.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described. On my MacBook I just used the default keyboard settings of F8 to get into the Spaces overview, and then F9 to bring up Exposé in 'All windows' mode. If you've changed those key bindings, use your correct ones, or you could combine the two using...
