Semantix Unveils Unique Cross-Platform Service Architecture
[MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA - JANUARY 10, 2000] - Semantix is proud to
announce the first preview version of its eXcentrix SDK for the Mac
developer community. eXcentrix is the first multi-platform client-server
architecture that allows text-based applications to use services provided
by a local or remote server. eXcentrix also serves as a middleware-the
layer that permits transparent communication between the client and the
server in the eXcentrix architecture.
"Before eXcentrix, language tool developers had to use a myriad of APIs to
integrate their software into multiple text-based applications", explains
Francis Malka, CEO of Semantix. "Now, there is one API that covers every
aspect of application software integration, whether for use on Mac OS or
Windows."
"eXcentrix was designed to be cross-platform from the start", says ric
Forget, eXcentrix Product Manager. "Using the concept of common design, our
Mac team has developed the software in the true Mac spirit." End users will
have the power to extend the features of their applications by buying
eXcentrix-compatible software or by searching for new services on the
Internet.
Installing eXcentrix adds the eXcentrix Services Menu to all applications
on a user's machine. The Services Menu lets users select and customize
their favorite language tools. It also provides instant access to all
installed services as well as a method to add new services.
eXcentrix is designed to seamlessly integrate translation engines, grammar
tools, dictionaries, and even online services into any active document.
Users can activate their translation software, search for a reference on
the Internet, or even buy a book, right from the Services Menu of an
application.
With eXcentrix SDK Preview 1, developers can get a headstart in adapting
their products in time for the upcoming end-user version of eXcentrix.
Preview 1 provides developers with the tools and documentation to make
servers. The API to make clients and interfaces will be available with
preview 2, which is scheduled for release in the spring of 2000. eXcentrix
Preview 1, though not feature-complete, has been tested with over 70
applications.
System Requirements
Mac OS 8.5 is required for eXcentrix Preview 1 along with a low level
debugger, such as Apple's MacsBug or Jasik's The Debugger. Semantix is
currently investigating the usefulness of supporting Mac OS 8.1.
Availability
The SDK version is now available at the eXcentrix Developer Web site:
www.excentrix.org. Expect future developer and end-user preview versions
which will also be free to download and use.
