ALADDIN ANNOUNCES STUFFIT EXPANDER 5.1- INDUSTRY STANDARD
DECOMPRESSION SOFTWARE NOW INCLUDES FREE, FASTER ACCESS TO MAC AND PC
FILES, PROVIDING A COMPLETE ACCESS SOLUTION

Aladdin Systems' StuffIt Expander 5.1 Is The Macintosh-Standard
Compression Access Tool For All Popular Downloads, Archives And Email
Files

Watsonville, CA- February 1, 1999 - Aladdin Systems today announced
StuffIt Expander(tm) 5.1, a FREE update to its popular, easy-to-use
expansion and access tool, is expected to ship February 5, 1999.
StuffIt Expander 5.1 adds FREE PC functionality (Zip and .uu
decoding) and access to all popular compressed and encoded files
found on the Internet. It is up to twice as fast at expanding files
than version 5.0 and is the most feature-rich release ever.

No program is easier to use than StuffIt Expander to decompress or
decode files downloaded from the Internet, sent via email, or
delivered on a floppy disk. Just drag-and-drop or double-click a
compressed or encoded file on StuffIt Expander and the application
accesses the file automatically. Expander even works seamlessly with
Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer(tm) and Netscape's
Navigator(tm).

"With over 10 years of innovation and dedication engineered into
StuffIt, we are pleased to provide StuffIt Expander FREE," said
Jonathan Kahn, Aladdin Systems' president. "StuffIt Expander 5.1
gives Macintosh users the best and easiest solution for accessing any
compressed or encoded file found on the Internet."

New Features and Enhancements for StuffIt Expander 5.1: *StuffIt
Expander 5.1 is up to twice as fast as the 5.0 version

*Now includes FREE Zip (.zip) and Gzip (.gz) expansion - Two of the
most popular compression formats for PC files

*Now includes .uu decoding- UUencoding is a popular PC encoding
method, similar to Macintosh's BinHex

*Now has Roman language text encoding conversion built-in - No
extensions or external files required

*StuffIt Expander now provides easy and convenient access to Internet
Config settings for all supported file formats with its new Internet
Config Preference. Internet Config is a free utility that maintains a
list of helper applications to use for processing files downloaded
from the Internet

*New helper application support is included for processing additional
file formats. StuffIt Expander now searches for an available "helper"
application on a user's hard disk to access files

*StuffIt Expander is smaller, making it faster to download

*Simplified, more transparent, and faster access to files in fewer
steps- When a user double-clicks or drags-and-drops a file to be
accessed, StuffIt Expander quickly and transparently decodes or
decompresses the file, then quits immediately

Built-in File Types Supported By StuffIt Expander 5.1:
- StuffIt, versions 5.0 to 1.5.1 (.sit, .sea) - Including encrypted archives
- BinHex (.hqx) - All versions
- MacBinary (.bin) - All versions
- Zip/GZip (.zip, .gz, .tgz) - Including encrypted Zip files
- UU (.uu, .uue, .enc) - The PC equivalent of BinHex (.hqx ) on the Mac
- Private File (.pf) - Aladdin's security software
- Disk Images (.img, .smi) - Expander mounts images created by
ShrinkWrap(tm) or Apple's Disk Copy(tm)

StuffIt Expander 5.1 is the only file expander capable of accessing
StuffIt self-extracting archives, Zip files, and StuffIt archives in
the new StuffIt 5.0 format. When the StuffIt Engine is present,
StuffIt Expander's expansion capabilities are greatly increased. The
engine, available as part of StuffIt Deluxe and DropStuff, is used by
many third-party applications to add compression and decompression to
their products. StuffIt Expander, with the StuffIt Engine, can
decompress and decode the following additional file types:

- Arc (.arc)
- AppleLink Package (.pkg)
- Compact Pro (.cpt)
- Lha (.lha, .lzh)
- MIME/Base 64 (.mime)
- TAR (.tar)
- Unix Compress (.z, .taz)

Macintosh Industry Standard
StuffIt Expander is the industry standard decompression tool for
accessing all the popular Internet files. With services like the Mac
Forums on CompuServe accepting the new 5.0 files, only StuffIt
Expander can decompress these files. Expander can access more
compressed, downloaded, encoded, segmented, encrypted, and disk image
files than ever before.

StuffIt Expander 5.1 can be downloaded FREE on all popular download
sites after February 5th at http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander.
Expander is the complete one-stop solution for any Internet or
Macintosh user.

With the addition of 800,000 iMac users accessing the Internet,
Aladdin has responded by improving StuffIt Expander to be faster and
access more file types than ever before. Mac users can now easily
access files without hassle, from other platforms (PC and Unix) and
in other languages. StuffIt is the #1 expansion software on the
Macintosh and is the clear choice for an expansion tool.

"There has never been as slick a product like StuffIt for the
Macintosh," said Greg Jewett, consultant and solutions developer.

(compression) product available. Nothing can top it. With a technical
support team that is attentive and knowledgeable, Aladdin will always
