Search Engine Now Available for WebTen

WebTen SDK Provides the Framework for Extending Tenon's Apache-Based Web
Server

Santa Barbara, CA, July 6, 1998. Tenon Intersystems today announced the
availability of ht://Dig, a high-performance, full-featured search engine
for WebTen. The popular ht://Dig search engine was developed at San Diego
State University. Using WebTen's SDK toolsuite, this UNIX-based search
engine was easily incorporated into Tenon's Apache-based web server for
Power Mac.

"We needed a high-performance crawler type search engine with specific
characteristics for our purposes", said Neil Ticktin, CEO of Xplain
Corporation and publisher of both NetProfessional and MacTech magazines.
"Upon looking around, ht://Dig looked to be a great solution that was in
use by some very high volume sites. Tenon was able to bring this under
WebTen's Apache in an amazingly little amount of time. We've been happy
ever since!"

The new search engine has the ability to search through many servers on a
network. The search output can be hand-tailored by using HTML templates.
Email notification, boolean expression searches and fuzzy searching via
configurable algorithms are all supported. The depth of the search can be
limited to a set of machines, a set of documents, or subsections of a
database. ht://Dig can be told to use a specific user name and password, so
protected servers can be indexed and indexing can be scheduled using cron,
which is included with WebTen.

Tenon is extending the user interface to make set-up and configuration of
ht://Dig easier. A preliminary version of the search engine is available
immediately at no cost to WebTen customers. It can be download from Tenon's
web site at: http://www.tenon.com/products/webten/htdig.shtml.

The WebTen SDK, the tool used to develop ht://Dig, is available as a public
beta for Macintosh developers. Tenon's web development kit integrates
Macintosh and UNIX Apache web development with a universal plug-in
architecture. The toolsuite lets Macintosh developers create Apache modules
that will run today with WebTen under MacOS, and later on MacOS X.
Furthermore, these Macintosh Apache modules could also be recompiled to run
on any of the over one million Apache web servers worldwide. The WebTen SDK
also lets UNIX vendors easily move standard UNIX-based web tools, such as
databases, streaming audio and video servers, and eCommerce tools, to the
Macintosh platform. The WebTen SDK can be used with Metrowerks' CodeWarrior
or with Tenon's MachTen, and is downloadable from:
http://www.tenon.com/products/webten/SDK.

WebTen, an industrial-strength, high-performance Apache-based Web server
for Power Macs, is able to sustain 1000 hits/second and includes DNS,
multihoming FTP, NFS, and SSL 3.0. Apache is well-known as stable,
full-strength, feature-rich web server software used on over one million
machines worldwide. Tenon has taken mature, integrated, scalable software
and extended it with performance enhancements and Macintosh-specific
features to make WebTen's Apache the fastest and easiest-to-use Apache in
the world.

Founded in 1989, Tenon Intersystems is a leader in high-performance
networking. Tenon technology, combined with the power of Apple's G3-based
machines, is providing the framework for world-class networking on the
Macintosh. Tenon Intersystems can be reached in the U.S. at 805-963-6983,
by the internet at sales@tenon.com, or via the web at http://www.tenon.com.
