Tools Plus Tames the Toolbox

OAKVILLE, Ontario--August 16, 1996--Macintosh developers have reason to
celebrate as Water's Edge Software unveils version 3.1 of Tools Plus
application development libraries. The newest edition now facilitates
resource-based programming, a boon for Macintosh developers who have been
toiling with the convoluted and limited Dialog Manager since the
Macintosh originally debuted in 1984.

The founding principle of Tools Plus is to let developers create any part
of their application's user interface with a single line of simple C, C++
or Pascal code. Once created, these elements work without the need for
support code, resource templates or event management. Identical benefits
now extend to developers who, out of preference or necessity, create
applications that rely on resource templates to create windows, dialogs,
controls, menus and other user interface elements.

Historically, developers using the Macintosh's built-in Dialog Manager
had to deal with dialog lists, handles and pointers to interface
elements, "hits" that signal the user's interaction with an object, and a
host of other complexities.

In contrast, a single routine in Tools Plus not only creates a dialog
using standard Macintosh resources, it automatically establishes and
maintains relationships between various user interface elements. An
example of this can be seen in an editing field:
o The Edit menu appropriately enables and disables its items
(Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Clear, Select All) as the user works
within the field.
o The field's text is edited when the user chooses an Edit menu
command.
o The Edit menu's "Undo" command shadows the user's actions and
provides complete Undo and Redo services, such as "Undo Typing"
and "Redo Paste."
o The cursor becomes an I-beam when it moves over a field.
o The insertion point flashes in the active field.
o The field's text is deselected when its parent window is
deactivated.

All these processes occur automatically as a result of creating a dialog
with a single Tools Plus routine. Similar benefits apply to all other
user interface objects, regardless if they are created dynamically by the
application, or by using resource templates.

Tools Plus facilitates the easy and rapid development of professional
quality applications and working prototypes. It includes a wealth of
state-of-the-art features like floating palettes and tool bars, editing
fields with filters and integrated scroll bars, high-quality customizable
picture buttons, 3D panels and a collection of world-class 3D and flat
controls comprised of a variety of buttons, tabs, sliders, a thermometer,
and a hierarchy triangle as seen in the Finder.

Developers who update their applications to use Tools Plus, or those who
create new applications with the libraries, program at a consistently
higher level throughout their projects' life cycle without sacrificing
their applications' performance or efficiency. Significant reductions in
source code volume and complexity are realized.

Tools Plus is also popular amongst Windows developers who are porting
their applications to Macintosh, or those who are just beginning to
develop Macintosh applications. Developers cite the short learning curve,
professional results, and significant savings in development time and
effort as factors for choosing Tools Plus.

Tools Plus 3.1 libraries are available immediately for:
Metrowerks CodeWarrior Gold....: $249 (680x0 and PowerPC)
Metrowerks CodeWarrior Bronze..: $199 (680x0 only)
