Stepwise and P & L Systems announce availability of OpenUp.app for Rhapsody

Waterloo, Ontario, Dec 10 1997 -- Scott Anguish of the Stepwise
Rhapsody/OpenStep Information Server today announced the immediate
availability of OpenUp.app for Apple's new Rhapsody operating system.

OpenUp allows a user to double-click on compressed and archived files and
have them open in the Workspace without having to resort to the
command-line tools gnutar and gunzip. It also supports opening the many
other common and uncommon formats.

"OpenUp allows normal users access to files compressed by many different
Unix and non-unix commandline tools without having to know the magic
incantations required," commented Scott Anguish, Stepwise creator and
OpenUp author, "Further, it's expandable, so if it doesn't handle handle
the compression and/or archiving formats you use now, additional scripted
bridges can be written."

The first release of OpenUp for Rhapsody will contain the following new
features:

* double-click Workspace decompression of many formats,
* Services support for .tgz and .zip compression (expandable)
* extendable by knowledgable users
* localized (currently English and French)
* includes the required binaries for handling many additional formats
* full commented source code included!
* accompanying Stepwise article explains design choices

OpenUp for Rhapsody and OpenStep is a free application and was made
possible by a grant from P & L Systems.

"OpenUp.app will serve to further enhance the Rhapsody user experience,"
commented Malcolm Crawford, Technical Marketing Manager of P & L Systems.
"We are pleased to have been able to support Scott's efforts in bringing
this application to Apple's new operating system."

The current version is 1.01, and is available for both Rhapsody/Mach and
OpenStep/Mach.
