Background:
Most technical computer professionals (e.g., engineers, programmers, and
scientists) are familiar with Perl's existence and with its increasing
popularity in UNIX and other circles. Many, indeed, have used it for CGI
scripting, network administration and programming, data filtering, etc.
Perl's powerful data structures, module libraries, and general flexibility
have made it popular among programmers, genetic researchers, administrators
of mixed networks, and many other sophisticated users.
MacPerl, a native port of Perl 5 to the Macintosh (both M68K and PPC) is
true freeware; both the source code and the binary executables are freely
redistributable. MacPerl runs under both the Finder and MPW and supports
numerous Mac-related extensions (dialog boxes, AppleScript calls, etc).
