[MD1] Increased Security for SiteEdit

PACIFIC COAST SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES UPDATE TO SITEEDIT PRO
-- Popular internet server untility gains increased security and versatility

San Diego, September 3, 1997 -- Pacific Coast Software has released an
updated version of SiteEdit and SiteEdit Pro for Macintosh that improves
the security of its user database and allows increased versatility for user
access. SiteEdit is a remote access tool for Macintosh and Windows Web
servers. SiteEdit 2.04 now encrypts all passwords stored in its user
database. Even if someone is able to access the password file they will not
be able to access SiteEdit. A corrupted password file will not cause
SiteEdit to revert to default passwords. Instead, a message telling the
visitor to contact the server administrator is displayed. In addition,
administrators are now able to securely give users access to folder aliases
that lead to locations outside their normal folder hierarchy. This
versatility is really useful for sites that have separate areas for
documents and graphics.

The update is part of our continued security and useability enhancements
and comes in response to the recent Crack A Mac contest where a hacker was
able to access protected files on the server and used this "back-door"
entry to view the SiteEdit passwords file. A full description of this event
