A recent analysis of the worldwide Macintosh installed base and the
Macintosh user base for fiscal year 1997 (ending September 30), revealed a
number of interesting highlights, including the following:

* 27.6 million Macintosh computers have been shipped worldwide since 1984.

* 79 percent of all Macintosh computers shipped are still in use. (That's
21.8 million active Macintosh computers.)

* There are an average of 3.2 users per active installed Macintosh, which
means there are 69.3 million Macintosh users worldwide.

FY1997 Macintosh Installed Base and User Statistics

"How many Macintosh computers have been sold? How many people use Macintosh
today? Where are they, and what do they use the Macintosh for?"

Apple Computer, Inc. believes that, as a valued Macintosh developer,
customer, or potential customer, you deserve to know the answers to these
and similar questions. This page contains the best information Apple has,
and we are sharing it with you to convince you--the customer--that the
Macintosh platform is alive and quite healthy, and you--the developer--that
the Macintosh platform deserves serious consideration for your development
efforts.

The data below is taken directly from Apple's Market Tracking Model, which
Apple uses internally in making its business decisions. The Market Tracking
Model is derived from various data sources, including numerous primary
end-user surveys, secondary research, Apple-internal data, industry
statistics, the Apple Customer Database, and customer demographics. The
data on this page is taken from the FY1997 Market Tracking Model, which
measures the Macintosh installed base as of September 30, 1997.

Highlights

The detailed data is given below. However, always keep in mind the
following points, which summarize what Apple knows about its Macintosh
customers and installed base:

27.6 million Apple Macintosh computers have been shipped worldwide since
1984. 79% of all Apple Macintosh computers shipped are still active in the
installed base (21.8 million Macintosh computers in use today). There are
an average of 3.2 users per Apple Macintosh computer in use today, which
computes to approximately 69.3 million Macintosh users worldwide.

Cumulative Macintosh Shipments
From the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984 through FY97 year end, Apple
has shipped 27,608,442 Macintosh computers worldwide.

Active Installed Base
As of the end of fiscal year 1997, Apple estimates the installed base of
Apple Macintosh computers currently in use to be about 21,800,000 Macintosh
computers, accounting for almost 80% of all Macintosh computers ever
shipped.

Macintosh User Base
As of the end of fiscal year 1997, Apple estimates the number of people
using Apple Macintosh computers to be about 69,300,000 people, representing
a worldwide average of 3.2 users per Macintosh computer in use today. This
estimate of the number of individuals using Macintosh computers is based on
demographics, Market Tracking Model installed-base estimates, and
conservative judgment on Apple's part. The bottoms-up analysis, below, was
done by segment and by country.
