BeOS TO BE BUNDLED IN MACTECH MAGAZINE

MENLO PARK, Calif. and WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- October 21, 1996 --
Be, Inc. and Xplain Corporation, the publisher of MacTech(tm) Magazine,
announced today that the BeOS(tm) DR8 for Power Macintosh will be
bundled, free of charge, on CD in the January, 1997 issue of MacTech
Magazine.

"We want to get the developer release of BeOS for PowerMac into the
hands of active PowerMac developers so that they can get up to speed on
the technology as rapidly as possible, " said Mark Gonzales, Director of
Marketing at Be, Inc. "MacTech is recognized as a key development
resource within the PowerMac community, and so it made complete sense
that we should work with them to reach a wide base of developers."

"With all of the buzz in the Mac community about the BeOS and rumors
about Be working with Apple, developers are exceedingly interested in
'playing' with the BeOS themselves." said Neil Ticktin, Publisher of
MacTech Magazine. "This issue will be outstanding. Not only will it
have the BeOS on CD bound into it, it will also have articles on the
BeOS and writing code for it."

The January issue of MacTech Magazine will begin shipping in
mid-December. For those interested in subscribing to MacTech in time to
start with the January issue, you must do so by November 10, 1996.

MacTech subscriptions are available through DevDepot:
800-MACDEV-1, Outside US/Canada: 805-494-9797, http://www.devdepot.com,
orders@devdepot.com. 12-month subscriptions are: $47 (Domestic), US$59
(Canadian), and US$97 (Foreign).

BeOS Background
---------------
The BeOS brings to the PowerMac platform a true, preemptive
multitasking, multi-threaded software system - offering protected
memory, true virtual memory, and an application architecture based on
shared libraries and modular code. The system's API is object-oriented,
an approach to software development that helps speed the addition of new
application capabilities. The BeOS leverages the latest in graphical
user interface concepts to produce an operating system that is both
powerful, and simple to use.

Within the BeOS, a variety of "software kits" and application tools
provide a wealth of functionality that includes integrated database
capabilities, 3D graphics, support for audio and MIDI data streams,
integrated Internet mail, remote log-in, and file and web serving
capabilities.

In addition to these capabilities, the BeOS incorporates many of the
data and network standards in use today, such as TCP/IP networking and
Internet protocols, TrueType and Postscript font technology, MPEG and
QuickTime video formats, Posix and standard UNIX tools, and more. In
addition, Be announced that it has licensed OpenGL(r), the industry
standard 3D environment from Silicon Graphics, and is working with
Metrowerks, Inc. to bring the Java language and environment to the BeOS.

The Bundled CD
BeOS for PowerMac, Developer Release 8
--------------------------------------
The CD bundled in the January issue of MacTech Magazine will be BeOS for
PowerMac, Developer Release 8. It supports a whole slew of 603 and 604
based PowerMacs from PowerComputing, Apple, and UMAX. For example, the
Catalyst and Tsunami architectures from Apple: Power Macs 7600, 8500 and
9500; Power Computing's PowerCenter, PowerTower, PowerTower E,
PowerTower Pro, and PowerWave; and the UMAX S900. DR8 does not support
drive partitioning, so you will need a small dedicated hard disk to boot
the BeOS. (Drive partitioning is supported in the release version of
BeOS for PowerMac currently slated for the first quarter, 1997).

The DR8 release of the BeOS for PowerMac is an early release meant for
development purposes. Be plans to ship the BeOS "Preview Release" in
the first quarter of 1997, and will be ready-to-run by end-users and
developers alike. MacTech readers who receive the DR8 release should
register with Be on the Be web site so that they can receive information
about receiving the Preview Release when it is available.
