Apple Announces Third Annual Software Design Awards for Mac OS Developers

Apple Design Awards Recognize Innovation, Advanced Look and Feel, and Use
of Apple Technologies

CUPERTINO, California--Apple Computer, Inc. announces its third annual
software design contest for Mac OS developers. Formerly known as the Human
Interface Design Excellence (HIDE) Awards, the Apple Design Awards
illustrate the Company's continued support for the Mac OS developer
community and recognize superior software in the areas of innovation, look
and feel, and use of Apple technologies. The Apple Design Award winners
will be announced during Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) on
May 13, 1998 in a ceremony at the Company's corporate headquarters.
Deadline forentries is April 15.

WWDC takes place May 11-15 in San Jose, California. More information on the

"Mac OS developers are an all-important Apple community whose products
showcase the unique attributes of the Macintosh platform," said Clent
Richardson, senior director of Worldwide Developer Relations at Apple. "The
Design Awards recognize and celebrate these accomplishments and we
encourage developers to enter the contest and receive the recognition they
deserve."

Three Apple Design Award winners and six runners-up will be announced in
the following categories:

Most Innovative
Best Look & Feel
Best Apple Technology Adoption

Winners will receive a trophy and the right to use the associated prize
logo to market their products. Runners-up will receive a plaque as well as
the right to use the associated prize logo to market their products.

The following Mac OS developers received awards last year:
Most Innovative Winner: Kai's Power GOO 1.0,MetaTools, Inc.
First Runner-up: Starry Night Deluxe 2.0, Sienna Software, Inc.
Second Runner-up: YOYO Telephone Manager for Macintosh 1.5.1, Big Island
Communications, Inc.

Most Elegant Winner: Starry Night Deluxe 2.0, Sienna Software, Inc.
First Runner-up: CalcWorks 1.5.2, John Brochu
Second Runner-up: AMBER: Journeys Beyond 1.0, Changeling, Inc.

Best Look & Feel Winner: YOYO Telephone Manager for Macintosh 1.5.1, Big
Island Communications, Inc.
First Runner-up: Adobe Illustrator 6.0, Adobe Systems, Inc.
Second Runner-up: Symantec Visual Cafe for Macintosh 1.0, Symantec Corp.

Best Overall Design Winner: YOYO Telephone Manager for Macintosh 1.5.1, Big
Island Communications, Inc.
First Runner-up: Starry Night Deluxe 2.0, Sienna Software, Inc.
Second Runner-up: Kai's Power GOO 1.0, MetaTools, Inc.

Official Apple Design Award contest rules and entry forms are available on

This contest is open to most forms of software written for the Mac OS.
Eligible software must have been made available to end-user customers no
later than April 15, 1998. Developers with questions regarding the awards
