Dear Sirs,
Can anybody help me in my problem?
I have the british made "AMSTRAD 3386SX" computer and after 80387SX
coprocessor installation, LOTUS MANIFEST says me: "Your coprocessor is
not detected by BIOS...", but "Coprocessor installed".
I've lost installation diskettes with AMSTRAD setup program,
traditional 286's SETUP.EXE says "Coprocessor Not Installed", PC
Magazine's BENCHTEST says "Coprocessor test passed OK", CheckIt says
"Coprocessor Not Installed", NORTON Sysinfo says "Installed OK" etc...
What's the problem??? Is it in CMOS setup? Is AMSTRAD CMOS different
from standard AT?
Another sympthom: When power on, computer says: "WARNING...Run CMOS
Setup. Set user options." But CMOS battery is operable and all is OK
with time and date. When I run AT's SETUP.EXE, it says: "CMOS time
error..." every time.

Does anyone know about speech recognition software for a PC? A couple
years ago a company in California, PERX, marketed a hardware/software

appears that they have gone out of business.
Any leads of state of the art speech recognition for pc would be

Hi, I was just reading your message on INFO-IBMPC. I had my bouts with
OS/2 this summer, and knows how great it can be, both while i'm using
it and in pain and anguish when it doesn't work. But anyway, to make
what otherwise would be a long & rambling message short...yes, you can
boot up with the 1st two install disks, and then access your HPFS
partition. what i ended up doing was making a copy of these two disks
and then leaving a text based editor lying around somewheres for
emergencies (like when my config.sys keeps getting garbled).
There are some great FAQ's and help files for os/2 kicking around on
the os/2 archives...the best one to look in is at ftp-os2.nmsu.edu I
found them much more useful than the standard IBM docs that comes with
the package. (this is not quite fair to IBM i suppose, considering that
there wasn't any documentation that comes with the windows-os/2
upgrade!)
Well, best of luck with that beast.

I have a question about cache memory. I am looking to upgrade my cache
from 64k to 256k.
1) Will this make a noticable improvement(even if small) in
system performance?
2) All the ads I have seem specify 32x8-15 or 32x8-20. What
does the last two digits represent ? I am assuming speed of the cache
memory. If so can I get quicker cache memory than is on my board
currently ?
3) What are some good prices for 32x8-?? chips ?
Please respond to me directly at cherasar@icarus.montclair.edu and I
will post to IBM-INFO with any relevant information.

Some time ago (over a year), some very helpful person distributed a
document relating to maintenance of IBM 8513 monitors (colour, VGA,

hands on it. My monitor has now developed a minor fault (a visible
horizontal scan bar during mode changes), and I would very much like to

no effect; if the original poster, or anyone having a copy, could get

Subject: FAX Software
My office has a couple of Supra 144 V.42bis FAX modems which were
purchased for high speed data transfers.
As we have several things that must be FAXed each day, I would like to
be able to fax them directly from a PC rather than printing a copy and
waiting for the FAX machine.
I have seen several software products which work with FAX modems in
this way. However, I have no experience using any of them.
Specifically, I am needing software which can run directly from DOS
(there isn't enough memory in the computer to run Windows), can import
either an ASCII file, a WordPerfect 5.1 document or a Wordstar
(6.0/7.0) document, can FAX in either Standard or Fine resolution FAX
mode, can FAX in landscape mode, and can output text in a 9 point
Courier (or other non proportionally spaced font; we need 136 columns
wide on an 11" wide piece of paper).
Additionally, the ability to completely run the program from a command
line is desirable (but not 100% required).
Any replies will be summarized to the list.

I would suggest that you have a Quantum harddisk, not too old:
Theyhhave a built-in automatic re-calibration process every 60 seconds
or so, which does not affect operation at all except for the short
'locking' you described. Besides that, Quantum harddisks are very
reliable - I have made very good experience with a medical data base
that operated 12 hours a day 6 days a week without hardware failure.
So don't worry.

Well, not always. Some ASCII fonts are PostScript Type 3 files (which
normally have the extension .PSF) and can't be interpreted by ATM.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think that ATM does understand Type 1 fonts
that are ASCII in stead of binary. Just be sure your WIN.INI and
ATM.INI settings are correct (i.e. specify the correct font file, .PFA
in stead of .PFB)

I don't know yet of a public domain util that does the conversion. I do
know however of some cheap commercial software that does it. You should
contact Berthold Horn (bkph@wheat-chex.ai.mit.edu) for more
information.
I wrote a .PFB to .PFA conversion program and I want to write a program

The best technical reference on this kind of things is the `black
book'. It is a small book with the Type 1 PostScript font format. The
cover is black and the full info is:
Adobe Type 1 Font Format
Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Inc.

It costs about $15 (says the cover).

Well, WFNBoss is not a very nice conversion program. First of all, it
understands a very limited set of encoding vectors (character sets) and
second, it doesn't handle hinting very well.

Yes, you can boot from the install disks and STILL access the HPFS
partitions. You can even read it from a DOS boot, but you'll have to
startup with a device driver (unfortunately, whoes name I can't
remember) which allows you to see any files with names which has the
standard DOS filename lenght. Anyway, when you find yourself wishing
you could boot from floppy, just pop in the first disk and then the 2nd
disk when it asks you to...but DO NOT continue with the installation.
Quit the installation as soon as you're given the choice (i can't
remember where this is exactly, but I'm quite sure that it happens on
the 2nd disk). The installation program will quit, and you'll be left
in the OS/2 command line. If you need to edit files, like CONFIG.SYS
on your hard drive, make sure you have an OS/2 text editor lying around
somewhere of course.
Oh btw, the problem with the growing swap file was fixed by a bug
release in August. I think it should have been incorporated into the
latest win-os/2 update.

Hope it's all as clear as mud now... :-)

There is a seldom known (at least the little dinky booklets that comes
with the install disks doesn't seem to want to tell us about) feature
of OS/2's that allows it to live happily in an EXTENDED partition.
This way, you can have DOS formatted in a PRIMARY partion and OS/2 on
the EXTENDED partition, and yes, OS/2 will even boot up from the
extended partition (at least from the boot manager anyway). When setup
like this, your DOS partition is accessible as drive C and your OS/2
stuffs would be D. This feature is very useful when using the DOS
compatibility mode.
It is also possible to access the HPFS partition from DOS - as I've
mentioned above...I think the correct proceedure to do this is hidden
in one of the booklets that comes with the package somewhere. (I have
exams all all week next week, so I can't help then, but if anyone is in
real direstraits and needs help trying to figure it out, contact me
after Dec. 19th, and I'll see if I can help.)
Anyway, there are some very useful and informative FAQ files and other
help files in the archive at ftp-os2.nmsu.edu in the pub/os2 directory.
They go a long way to help fill in the gaps left by IBM's non existant
documentation.
Hope it's all as clear as mud now... :-)

From: sys048@aberdeen.ac.uk
Subject: PS/2 High Density Mode compatibility for 3.5" disks
Double Density (720Kb) 3.5" disks have one square 'write-protect' hole,
while High Density (1.44Mb) disks have a second square hole which is
there for hardware sensing of the disk capacity.
Not all machines make use of this information. I believe this is true
of IBM PS/2s as well as some PCs.
It is therefore possible to format a Double Density disk in one of
these machines as 1.44MB. If you then try to read such a disk in a
machine that makes use of the check it will see that it has no
'high-density' hole. It will assume that the format is 720Kb. When it
finds that this not the case it will give an error message - usually
'General error reading drive A:'
If this IS the cause of the problem, the best course of action is to
put the disk in an 'uncaring' machine, copy the files onto a disk
formatted to the intended capacity (ie Double density 720K or HD
1.44Mb) and then all will be well. Drilling second holes has been done,
but is not recommended!
Of course, you can provoke a similar situation by formatting a High
Density disk to the lower capacity. This is easier to get round - just
stick something over the second hole.
Hope this helps
