Step by step: Create a hierarchical chart
OpenOffice.org Drawing application can be put to practical use creating a hierarchical chart and saving it for web distribution. Many of the techniques in this example can be applied to other applications in the suite so, if you've never used OpenOffice.org before, following this step by step is a good place to start:
1.
Open OpenOffice.org Drawing and choose Format, Page and select
A4 paper from the Format dropdown list and Landscape orientation
and set the desired margins. Click the Background tab and set
a background colour or design. |
2.
Click the Text tool in the left toolbox and drag to create a
text box for the top level of the hierarchy. Click in the text
box and type the details to go in that text box. Right click
a line of text and choose Alignment, Centered to centre it.
3.
Select the text in the box, right click and choose Character,
Font tab to select the font and use the Font Effects tab to
choose the font colour. To add a border around the text box,
right click the box itself rather than the text in it and click
Line, Line tab and choose a Style, Color and Width. |
4.
To make copies of the text box, choose Edit, Duplicate, set
the number of second level boxes to create and click Ok. Drag
these one by one roughly into position on the page. Select and
alter the text in each of the text boxes to suit your needs.
5.
To align the second tier boxes, hold shift as you click each
in turn. Right click and choose Alignment, Top to align them
along their top edges. To distribute them on the page, right
click and choose Distribution, Horizontal, Spacing. |
6.
Click the Connector button in the toolbar, click
on a point on one object and, holding the mouse button, click
on the object to connect it to. Repeat to connect all the objects.
When you're done, save the drawing as an OpenOffice.org file
in case you need to edit it again later on. To save it for use
on a web site, choose File, Export and choose JPEG or GIF from
the Save as type dropdown list. |
