OpenOffice.org supports the major Microsoft Office file formats such as .doc, .xls and .ppt. However, whenever you are working on a file that contains images, tables and fancy formatting you are well advised to save the file in the native OpenOffice.org format first and then save a copy in the appropriate Office format. If you do this so you can share the document with someone who uses Microsoft Office then, provided they don't make changes to the document, you can continue to work on your original but still give them one that they can view. The native format is less likely to result in complex formatting being lost when you close and reopen the document.
