The Mount Rushmore State is 75,898 square miles bisected by the Missouri River, with five distinct geographical areas with their own special characteristics. Well-managed fisheries in the Black Hills impoundments and reservoirs, streams, and lakes provide anglers with rainbow, brown, and eastern brook trout. The West River Prairie region sports thousands of ponds where largemouth bass is king, and impoundments on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian reservations offer bass, panfish, catfish, and some walleye. The Missouri River impoundments and huge Oahe Reservoir and dams, which form the great lakes region, boast over 30 species of fish. The beautiful and abundant natural lakes in the northeastern and southeastern parts of the state provide panfish, walleye, bass, and northern pike.
