General InformationMichigan, known by most as the automobile capital of the world and a "water wonderland," is actually two peninsulas jutting into and surrounded by the Great Lakes. The Lower Peninsula is bordered by Indiana and Ohio to the south, and Lakes Michigan, Erie, St.Clair, and Huron to the east and west. It is readily identified by its mitten-shaped outline. The Upper Peninsula is joined to Wisconsin to the west and bordered by Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron to the east, north, and south. Michigan has over 3,100 miles of freshwater coastline creating a natural recreation venue. Capital City: Lansing Largest City: Detriot National Parks and Forests: Sport FishingThe Great Lakes and an enormous number of inland lakes provide the angler with numerous fishing options in Michigan. The Great Lakes remain the main attraction to most anglers, especially for the seasonal runs of steelhead, coho salmon, and brown trout in many of the tributaries. Anglers with depth-controlled equipment can catch salmon, brown trout, and lake trout throughout the year. Trout fishing is probably the most productive fishing in the state. Rainbows are widely distributed throughout Michigan, and brook and brown trout live in many of the same rivers, lakes, and streams. Popular trout fisheries in the Lower Peninsula include the Muskegon, Pere Marquette, Manistee, AuSable, Platte and Boardman rivers, and in the Upper Peninsula, the Huron, Two-Hearted, Chocolay, Black and Sturgeon rivers. Many of the warm-water lakes, rivers, and reservoirs in the southern Lower Peninsula hold sport fish such as northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, muskie, white bass, yellow perch, and panfish. HuntingOver half the state of Michigan is forested, providing ample cover and habitat for a number of mammals and birds. The most popular among big-game hunters in the state is the white-tailed deer. Elk and bear are also found in some areas of the state. Rabbit, hare, squirrel, wild turkey, pheasant, ruffed grouse, woodcock, and waterfowl are favorites of the bird and small-game hunters.
