Sport Fishing

Nebraska has a reputation for being an arid state, but one quickly finds that it has bountiful water resources with 11,000 miles of streams and rivers and over 3,300 lakes. Thirty-one different fish species are available throughout the state, including rainbow, brown, and brook trout in the western Panhandle region. White bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, crappie, sauger, and paddlefish round out spring fishing, with notable venues being Lewis and Clark Reservoir in the northeast, over 40 lakes in the Sand Hills region, and the Missouri River in the southeast.

In the summer and fall months, look for smallmouth bass, catfish, walleye, drum, bluegill, and bullhead. Ice fishing in the winter and non-gamefish bowfishing, snagging, and spearing make for year-round angling opportunity.

Hunting

Nebraska is rich in hunting opportunity year-round. Favorite big-game species include deer, antelope and elk, while small-game hunters have mourning dove, grouse, woodcock, cottontail and jackrabbit, partridge, quail, rail, and snipe. Waterfowling is popular, and furbearers abound. Hunting is permitted on state and federal lands, offering hunters a wide range of opportunity throughout the state.
