The history of the people of Castilla y Le≤n has been interwoven with the history of other peoples, and at one time their destiny was linked with that of Flanders. When Charles of Ghent was proclaimed King of Spain in 1516, this was the final touch on the economic, political and cultural connection which had begun with the State marriages between the children of Isabella and Ferdinand, the Catholic Kings, and those of Emperor Maximilian of Austria and Mary of Burgundy.

Burgos, Medina del Campo and Valladolid embarked on trade relations, first with Bruges and later with Antwerp. The predilection for all things Flemish became firmly established in our cathedrals, monasteries and parishes, and the gentle, luxuriant artistic style established itself in an architectural environment which still preserved its Oriental roots reaching back several centuries.

This fifth phase of "Las Edades del Hombre" brings to Antwerp an exhibition of the art which came to us out of the North, bearing witness to a view of humanity which was common to the two peoples.

CATHEDRAL OF ANTWERP

16 September - 10 December 1995

USEFULL INFORMATION

Exhibition Catalogue

The exhibition, justlike the other phases, will take place in a cathedral, since the majority of the works of art on display were created for religious buildings. In that setting they are not devoid of expression, as is the case in museums, but they rather regain their transcendent message.

The re-creation of the cultural, artistic and spiritual world of that age is the demanding challenge which faces us as we go into this exhibition.
The icons, paintings, books, tapestries etc. bring their message into the cathedral in the form of the roomsof a house: they maintain their cohesiveness but each one tells of a single aspect or crystallises a single idea, a story from the past which causes us to ask questions ourselves about what is happening to us now, in the midst of our highly technological society
